Social work involves passionate individuals who are dedicated to helping others by providing services to vulnerable children, families or individuals in need, while constantly looking for ways in which we can improve society. This discipline is dedicated to helping people find solutions to their problems in order to make the world a better place. I chose this field of study, because I find the job of a social worker rewarding. I have always enjoyed helping others and knowing that I have made a difference in someone’s life. It is no secret that this is a challenging career; however, the feeling of knowing that you made the world a better place is indescribable. I have simply decided to make my passion of helping others into a career. I know that in order to make my passion a career I will need to get the best education and training possible.

When I first heard of human services, I was first confused with being human resources. Back then about two years ago, I made the decision to go with social work from my original psychology prerequisites. Calling the CSU, Dominguez Hills office, I was actually confused of the word human services when I actually called for information on social work. After some research with human services, I've decided to major in the field and to attend at CSU, Dominguez Hills. How I got into human services/social work, it was a long personal journey I had to take that lead me to this field.

Social Work is a distinctive practice and an ever-changing field in our world today. A few especially intriguing aspects of this profession are the wide spectrum of its professional values and ethics, appreciation for human diversity, and the emphasis on social and economic justice. With such widespread approaches and focuses, a master 's degree in Social Work would open endless and exciting possibilities for my future. However, I believe that before a career is even considered, one must examine their personal motivations and influences.

I am a 19 year old college student who grew up in Aurora, Illinois. Right now I’m going to college at Northern Illinois University to pursue a degree in family and child studies. By achieving this degree, I hope to become a social worker, and eventually work with children in the foster system. Over the past 19 years many things have grown me into the person I am today. This last sentence is what I will examine through sociological imagination throughout this paper.

I was born in the third world country where analphabetism is at its zenith poverty is rampant. I Migrated to America from Haiti where you have to learn a new language, your no longer in your comfort zone. In 1987, coming in to America its different then the Caribbean where really give me a more focus on how to better serve my people, by pursuing my dream. At first my parents wanted me to be a nurse but that was never my interest. I always wanted to be a social worker because the field always fascinated me and also to have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings.

I am Dolores Hatcher and my hometown is Birmingham, Alabama. I am returning to college fulltime after a ten year absence. The university classifies me as a senior transfer / non-traditional student. I am entering my fourth semester at Alabama A&M University. My major is Social Work and it is my passion. My life has been centered on helping people. Twenty plus years ago I joined the military and after a small number of years I changed my job to Chaplain Assistant (religious support). I feel this is why Social Work as a career field suits me more than any other field. I want to work in the health care field of gerontology. Becoming a Clinical Social Worker is the ultimate dream.

A recruiter first introduced me to the AmeriCorps Network one year ago at the annual, University of Connecticut Careers for the Common Good fair. During his brief presentation, I became intrigued. As a result, I opted to further research this organization. I then realized that I wanted to become one of the 80,000 members per year to join because, as an endeavoring youth social worker, I believe that serving with this organization will be a phenomenal opportunity to learn how to appropriately work with children from all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The experience I will gain working towards strengthening local communities by addressing matters paramount to the populace, including enhancing the quality of life for local students while acquiring invaluable core competencies, obtaining money for my education and discovering a new appreciation for citizenship is worthwhile as I work towards achieving my ultimate career objective.

Ever since I was young, I have had the desire to be of help to the people who were less fortunate. Growing up was quite challenging for my family and I. We had an impoverished life where we lived in a 4-bedroomed house that housed 16 members of our family. We lived with two aunties and their children. Sometimes we would go without meals, water, and other necessities.

Seeking the social work training which furnishes me the chance to deepen specialized knowledge of social work, acquire professional techniques and boost my helping skills. On account of my similar traumatic experience, I have deep sympathy for children in high-risk family. Understand the children’s solitariness and helplessness. I had struggled with suffering many years. Without giving up,I got rid of an extreme pessimist and kept a healthy mind after all.

Late one Monday night in the midst of fall semester turmoil, a group of hurting and broken ladies began to share their burdens. I was grieved for the young women sitting before me; however, I could not discern how to react or bring clarity to their diverse situations. I could contribute my opinions, and relay advice on how to best adapt to the setting at hand; yet I quickly realized I was not equipped for this job. Attending the University of Alabama has been one of the most treasured moments of my life thus far.

The field of social work is boundless, and my educational attainment from the bachelor of social work program at Grand Valley State University has adequately prepared me to enter the field. However, by obtaining a master’s degree in social work, I will only be further expanding my opportunities and amassing my knowledge and understanding of diverse populations and the field. At this time, I am motivated to pursue a master’s degree in social work, because I want to serve our country and practice in the field of social work; I want to be an United States Navy Social Worker. However, the U.S. Defense Department requires social workers to obtain their master’s degree before signing with any military branch. Moreover, I am motivated to obtain my MSW, so

I was in grade 10 when I thought of becoming a social worker. As social worker practitioner the fields that interest me to work in is domestic violence and child abuse because I want to make change to the society. Also Mahatma Gandhi was my major inspiration through this quote “Be the change that you wish to see in the world”. Than an idea came to me, why not involve my contribution to the wide variety of communities. My communication with school counsellors and social workers has impacted my choice of desiring to study social work. I realised that if I have had a chance of seeing a social worker when I was young, things would have been much easier and less stressful. I want to provide opportunities that I did not encounter to other people. This essay will reflect my past experience, motivation and why I want to be a social worker, values, beliefs and theory of practice.

Social work has been a passion since I was a young child, advocating for people whom otherwise may not be able to assist themselves. Social work offers empowerment and self-actualization to individuals to accomplish their life’s goals and being apart of that creates a self-reward, I honor with great gratitude. I chose social work as a profession after working with individuals challenged by mental illness; I wanted to make a difference not only in the individual’s life, but in my community. After pursuing an undergraduate degree in social work, I wanted to achieve the highest level of education in my field; therefore going to graduate school was an inevitable career choice.
