Masters of Social Work Personal Statement Everyone goes through times in their lives when they are not sure as to where they want to go in life or what their intent is. I always knew that my generic life intent was to help others, but that was never a good enough reason for me. Even up through my sophomore year of undergraduate studies, I did not know exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up. It was the exhilaration of providing children with the thought that they could do anything they wanted to and be whoever they wanted to be that made me realize what my life's plan was. Realizing that my obstacles, my experiences, and my unsureness was exactly what I needed to go through in order to understand that I needed to be that encouragement, that perseverance, and that voice that advocated for youth. I recognized my calling to be a Youth Therapist. At the age of 13, I was a troubled youth. I had problems of my own that involved getting into trouble with my parents and rebelling from their rules and their guidance. There were those days that I did not care about what my parents wanted out of me or that all they wanted was the best for …show more content…
This grant allows for the connection of many different community resources, businesses, families, and youth to get together and express themselves in a youth guided, family driven experience. With all that being outlined, I am also the Youth Peer Support Specialist at my mental health center in which my main goal and objective for the youth is to assist them in smoothly transitioning into adulthood. I currently work with youth who are needing guidance in employment building skills, independent living skills, budgeting skills, etc. and helping them go from being a youth to an adult as smoothly as possible. I have already had one success in the past eight months of working as a youth support by having one of my youth be able to successfully obtain a
My main reason for applying to the Simmons School of Social Work is that it is an accredited university with an excellent reputation as an educational institution and offers an MSW program that is predominantly online. I attended Thomas Edison State University online and earned my bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.9. Once I made the decision to continue my education, I searched for MSW programs that were available online with CSWE accreditation in compliance with New Jersey State social work licensure. I found that Simmons’s specialized program in clinical social work is well suited for my educational needs.
I cannot emphasize enough the passion I have for child welfare services, I like helping individuals, children to be exact. I cannot see myself doing anything else with my life I never wanted to do anything else in life. I have demonstrated a great deal of capacity for success in the Indiana child welfare scholars program by a number of things: one, staying commented to one major; two presenting myself as a practicing child welfare worker; three, pushing myself to always do better in my classes. Once I knew I wanted to go to college in order to achieve my dream social work was my only option. If I did anything else it would have been for the money I would not have been for the right respectable reasons.
Personal Statement Coming into Florida State University, my plan of action had nothing to do with social work really. I came to the university with the intention to go into Clinical Psychology, therefore I was majoring in psychology and minoring in biology for the first semester or so of my time here at Florida State. While my path has changed, my ideas and goals have remained the same for the most part. I have known for a long time that I truly want to work with and help people. Growing up with a very challenging and trauma filled childhood, sincerely made me want to help others that are suffering or suffered previously from the same sort of things I had to deal with.
I am a 19 year old college student who grew up in Aurora, Illinois. Right now I’m going to college at Northern Illinois University to pursue a degree in family and child studies. By achieving this degree, I hope to become a social worker, and eventually work with children in the foster system. Over the past 19 years many things have grown me into the person I am today. This last sentence is what I will examine through sociological imagination throughout this paper.
As a teenager, I once came across a woman who said, very softly, "I wish to die" as I passed her. It changed my life. I could have dismissed her comment as my imagination, for there no obvious sign she was in distress, and carried on walking. However, knowing people who suffer from mental illness, including a teacher who committed suicide despite seeming 'perfectly fine', even then I knew mental illnesses weren't always obvious.
As stated previously, my interest in Social Work stems from the women in my life who are part of this profession. my grandmother being the main example. She has been a social worker for many years and has seen many walks of life. her patience, advice and problem solving skills are unmatched. Although my grandmother did spark my interest in social work, I received guidance and counseling from social workers in high school.
When I was six and placed in the Foster Care System for three years away from my mother, it made me value the importance of family one needs a young age. This childhood experience I hold with me will benefit in the field of social work, which is what I want to pursue in college as my degree. I believe one of the most difficult obstacles I had to face being taken away from my mother while not knowing the problem of the situation and learning how handle at such a young age to be away from my mother's warmth. I give complete gratitude to my mother who fought her best to win us over when the odds were against her, and to the thoughtful social workers who understood the situation my siblings and me. As I now enter college I have taken a look at
I am writing to inform you of my interest in the Fall of 2015, Bachelor of Social Work program at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Attached you will find my application with applicable documentation.
I intend to earn my Bachelor's and Master's of Social Work so I can pursue a career in clinical private practice with the elderly. In addition, I will double minor in gerontology and sociology to further prepare me for my future career. Because of my credits from high school and work ethic, I will be able to graduate with my Bachelor’s in just three years, which will result in significant savings of college expenses. Due to my past experiences with bullying in which my supposed good friends over a three-year period, I always knew I wanted to work in the social work field. Since Rhode Island College has one of the top social work programs in the country, I was sure this school would be a great fit for me.
From an early age, I have accompanied my mother as she lent a listening ear to sex workers, feed the homeless, and visited the elderly in nursing homes; these moments instilled in me a strong desire to help others. Throughout my undergraduate years, I debated whether I would help others on a macro level, by studying economics, or an individual level, by studying psychology. Although both of these fields increased my awareness of systematic and personal issues which kept people oppressed, neither focused on alleviating the conditions of those most in need. After researching several fields, social work appealed most to me because it’s a practical evidence-based profession focused on helping others rediscover their strengths.
A recruiter first introduced me to the AmeriCorps Network one year ago at the annual, University of Connecticut Careers for the Common Good fair. During his brief presentation, I became intrigued. As a result, I opted to further research this organization. I then realized that I wanted to become one of the 80,000 members per year to join because, as an endeavoring youth social worker, I believe that serving with this organization will be a phenomenal opportunity to learn how to appropriately work with children from all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The experience I will gain working towards strengthening local communities by addressing matters paramount to the populace, including enhancing the quality of life for local students while acquiring invaluable core competencies, obtaining money for my education and discovering a new appreciation for citizenship is worthwhile as I work towards achieving my ultimate career objective.
Seeking the social work training which furnishes me the chance to deepen specialized knowledge of social work, acquire professional techniques and boost my helping skills. On account of my similar traumatic experience, I have deep sympathy for children in high-risk family. Understand the children’s solitariness and helplessness. I had struggled with suffering many years. Without giving up,I got rid of an extreme pessimist and kept a healthy mind after all.
When I decided to pursue a degree in social work; I decided that I wanted to become an LSCW. After achieving this, I intend to give counseling services to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. I hope to gain more knowledge and to develop skills towards providing counseling. I wish to excel at the micro level to offer the best care possible for surviving victims. I intend to finish this program with the same dedication I have shown throughout my undergraduate degree.
Ages ago in the summer of 1999, I graced my parents with my presence, shortly after my birth I was named Nicole Merkel-Hays. In the future, I eventually strive to earn a living working for the Department of Child Protective Services here in Iowa. This is my first year as a college student. It is my plan to major in social work, after I receive my associates degree in social work from the EICC. I intend to complete a bachelor's degree at a four-year university.
Growing up, I always had a knack for wanting to help others. Upon entering college I knew I wanted to work in a helping profession. I matriculated my college career as an Early Childhood Education major. My goal was to teach in low income middle schools and improve test scores of students. However, upon entering the program I knew that teaching was something that I was not passionate about. My grades began to slip and I was placed on academic probation. I was determined to find something that was for me in college. I knew that I wanted to continue to help others and after researching the many jobs a social worker can have is when I changed my major to Social Work. Choosing to major in Social Work was one of the best
