The main goal of Social Work practice is the psychosocial improvement of the individuals within a system and the system where they operate. Social Work has three different concentrations, Micro practice, Mezzo practice and Macro practice. Micro practice focuses on individual and small groups such as couples, families and groups. This practice is more direct or face to face intervention. Mezzo practice focuses in medium communities, it can be face to face or indirect practice. And Macro practice focuses on larger systems such as organizations, institutions, regions and countries. In this paper I will compare the role of Social Work intervention in Jose’s situation, young Hispanic LGBT, and the current situation of the LBGT community from the …show more content…
His mother will be bring into therapy once he feels ready to tell her about her sexual orientation. After Jose had come out to his mother it will be necessary that both of them receive the support and guidance they need. So they can know how to tell the rest of the family about Jose’s sexual orientation. Probably after the rest of the family know about Jose’s sexual orientation they can go through an emotional crisis. This will require that the whole family gets emotional support or attend help groups for family members of LGBT. Likewise, they will need to receive education on LGBT matters.
Evaluation & Termination: After several months of therapy Jose has noted changes in his behavior. He accepts his sexual orientation more openly now. His family is supporting him. Both Jose and his family feel that therapy has been helpful. Thanks to the support groups and education received they are more understanding of the LGBT community. Moreover they feel like they will need to keep attending support group sessions for a little longer. Due to they are still afraid of the stigmatization they can be victims of when their extended family and community learn about Jose’s sexual

Two of them will be the facilitators of the group and the other one will be the director of the program. One of the social workers will work with LGBT individuals and the other will work with the family. This way will offer more confidentiality for the LGBT clients.
Group dynamic will be based in Systems Theory, this theory “Sees human behavior as the outcome of reciprocal interactions of persons operating within linked systems” (Hutchinson, 2011 pg.38). If one part of the system is change the entire system will be forced to change. If the program objectives how LGBT people are seen within the Latino community change are achieved. This paper focuses on counseling clients a part of the “sexual minority” (Yarhouse, Kays, and Jones, 2013). The information regarding sexual minorities and the techniques to counsel these clients are summarized from Yarhouse et al.’s “The Sexual Minority Client” (2013). The basis for counseling the sexual minority is competence. This shift to competence is primarily from the “multicultural movement” (Yarhouse, et. al., 2013). Two supporting therapies of this movement are and “affirmative approach” and “sexual identity therapy” (Yarhouse, et. al., 2013). Counselors’ beliefs and values are inevitable in therapy. Practicing in an area with similar beliefs and values minimizes ethical issues. Personal reflection shows acceptance of information provided in the chapter except statements from the ACA and APA in which Christian counselors seem discouraged to provide therapy for the sexual minority. Interest exists in the areas of percentages concerning sexual minority, as well as, these individuals claiming an identity. The primary form of therapy to be administered for a sexual minority client is sexual identity therapy. This therapy provides the least risk in regards to ethics. The client chooses the goal and the counselor acts as a support for the client to obtain the goal. Though beliefs differ, the client will be supported even if the homosexual
With more and more people coming out and developing their sexual identity each year. I feel as future social workers we have an obligation to support and respect this community as well as each person's identity. Our job involves understanding this population and advocating for equal rights for all individuals. It is clear that the concept of social justice will not be realized until society can embrace the notion that different does not mean bad.“The only idea involved in all questions of sexual orientation are the great transcendent issues of justice and love. Acceptance of the homosexual community will leave both communities free from the need to conform to narrow stereotypes and free to develop all the qualities that belong to the fullness of the human personality.”( Blackwell, C. W., Ricks, J. L., & Dziegielewski, S. F.
As social workers, it is important to study the entire aspect of the individual. We must examine the individual past and see if their condition is trauma-related. It is the job of the social worker to identify the issue, in this case it would be a person who suffers from a mental illness and is placed in isolation when in jail or person and find the best solution for that issue. The solution to the issue may not be what’s written in a handbook or what we were thought, but sometimes we must find alternate resolutions. While we may not have the answers to combat the issue; if as social workers we could find the root cause of the issue that may help in the intervention process.
Group work is an effective method of therapy in which a social worker leads a group of individuals who have a common purpose. Group work is used for many populations, and there are constantly new models of group work that are developed for certain underserved populations. One of those populations is the LGBTQ community, specifically, LGBTQ adolescents. This essay will cover new models that can be implemented to lead groups with LGBTQ group members. The purpose of the models is to promote resiliency and to be used as interventions for those who have trouble coping with stress. There will also be discussion about the benefits for facilitators and members who participate in groups, and how effective these groups are for LGBTQ adolescents. It is important to care about the LGBTQ community because they are more alienated than other minority groups. Someone who is part of a racial or gender minority has friends or family that identify with the same status; LGBTQ do not always have someone who identifies with them, making them more vulnerable than most other minorities.
I will then list areas I have identified as my own personal weak points for further development.
For my immersion paper I would like to write about the Latino LGBT community. This would be a great opportunity to immerse myself in a group that has had a history of oppression and recently has been involved in major civil movement towards equality. As I have previously mentioned in class, my 18-year-old brother is gay and has had a difficult time finding comfort in his environment. It was as if he had to go through a period of re-socialization to adapt a to a new role as a gay man. Being raised in a culture that shames homosexuality has strained my brother’s relationship with our nuclear family and his community as a whole. I would like to see how the Latino American LGBT community deals with the dichotomy between their culture/ethnicity
As an interdisciplinary field, social work is comprised of several components, one is the creation and implementation of group work. Group work practice offers numerous benefits for social workers, research, program development, and individual treatment however incorporating group work into practice involves extensive organizing, planning, and proposing. Group work is divided into six stages: planning, beginning, assessment, middle, ending, and evaluation; all incorporating the standards, ethics, and values of the National Association of Social Work (NASW), International Association of Social Work with Groups (IASWG), and the Council on Social Work Education
According to Dentano et al. (2016), social work programs deliver LGBTQ content in their classrooms, but there are still homophobia and heterosexism within social work education in
Social workers have many different practices and approaches to draw on for work with individuals, families, communities and society as a whole. These approaches and techniques can be varied depending on the distinctive
This essay will identify key issues facing the client system and will demonstrate an intervention plan. Followed by defining the purpose of social work and the identification of the AASW Code of Ethics, in regards to the case study. Lastly, key bodies of knowledge will be identified and applied to the case study.
The values of social work include service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, the importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. Including these values in one’s social work practice will in most cases create rather successful results. Discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people will be the focus of this paper. The Equality Act will also be discussed because it is a policy being pushed to create federal non-discrimination laws for LGBTQ people. This then poses the question, will the passing of the Equality Act into law decrease discrimination against LGBTQ people? To answer this question the five dimensions of social policy and change will be discussed.
The lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community has never received as much attention as they are right now. Much of this attention is stemming from this population struggling to obtain the same rights given to the remainder of the population. The LGBT community faces many challenges in their personal system, social environment, and then in the public system. In working with the LGBT population, the social worker needs to examine how the individual views themselves, not only through sexual identity, but as an individual. We need to look at the prejudices and condemnation they have encountered which may have led to further uncertainty or confusion.
The LGBT community has been silently suffering through generations. But in this generation, they are finally showing the world their voice. There have been many instances where young adults were denied their right to be who they are and now they are speaking out about the mistreatment. Even though the united states have begun to be more open about the LGBT community here is still more change it come. These changes can be explained through many sociological perspectives including: functionalist, conflict, symbolic interactionism and interactionism. Along with these perspective religion, norms and deviance all impact these individuals who are striving to be open about who they really are inside and out.
Social Work is a discipline that can be a very rewarding experience for both the worker and the client. The practice involves working with individuals, families, or groups who are struggling to cope with life`s challenges. The social worker must combine his or her personal qualities, creative abilities, and social concerns with the professional knowledge in order to help client’s social functioning or prevent social problems from developing (Bradford W. Sheafor, 2008, p. 34). Social work practice seeks to promote human well-being, while addressing the processes by which individuals and groups are marginalized or diminished in their capacity to participate as citizens (Ian O'Connor, 2006, p. 1).
