By applying the social power lens to American Born Chinese the message of the story the same but with a little extra “seasoning”. Though by saying the story doesn’t change, in a sense that we view it another way. Now by applying the social power lens to the characters this will put the most interesting view on the book. The Monkey King is torturing what seems to be a civilian. But to be interrupted by his creator, who shows him he has all power over the monkey. When applying the social power lens we see that the Monkey King believe he is truly to be respected and honored, but with the help of his creator is to rethink that thought. Though his creator tries he fails and traps him under a huge pile of rock tell he transforms back to himself. Though we realize the the King is not in fact at a higher status than his creator and the civilian, he does not see this until another civilian comes to try to free him. Jin believes because he looks to much like an Asian that Amelia wouldn’t go out with him. So he changes his hair for her, in the sense that he believes he is of a lower status. Meaning he does not believe in himself. When applying this lens we see that Jin believes he is of a lower status and he thinks he needs to change to get a girl. Though we don’t know if he would have gotten Amelia …show more content…
When a traveler insists he free himself the King gets upset. When the traveler is almost killed by two giants, the King is forced to free himself and save the traveler. Again the Monkey King believes he is of a higher status than the traveler. He soon realizes that from his stubbornness he is of the same status as the traveler. He is just in time to free the traveler so he doesn’t die. By applying the social power lens to the Monkey King situation we see at first he is selfish and believes he is the best but soon realizes he is the same as everyone else no better no
In addition, a king was expected to be a role model to his people. He was a symbol of human perfection for his subjects to emulate like in our president today.
Immediately from the beginning the book leads us on with the Monkey King to overcome the challenge of getting accepted to a dinner party. The Monkey King is almost exactly of what one might but with a twist. He’s a regular monkey with a little bit more to offer to the world. He possess leadership, and understands many skills worthy to be a ruler, and becomes little out of hand when he gets upset. A prime example of this is when he attempted to prove the guard that he was well worthy of entering the dinner party. The Monkey King tried to persuade the guard by stating “I am the sovereign ruler of flower-fruit mountain” in order for the guard to understand that this little monkey wasn’t so little (14). The Monkey King even laid out his credentials for the worthy disciplines he mastered. This was a great challenge the Monkey King did since it involved thousands of minor disciplines and four major disciplines. This all tells me that this monkey was no ordinary monkey, but a
After the dinner, the Monkey King started to hate his monkey smell and locked himself in the inner to studied kung-fu. On page 60, the Monkey King changed his form from short to tall and he wore shoes. He looked like a human than before. Jin, after changing his hair, still wanted to change to someone else. On page 194, Jin suddenly changed. His hair became blonde and he got taller. And he called himself Danny. This reveals that they both tried to fit in their community by changing themselves. The Monkey King changed his form-shape, wore shoes and thought that he is not a monkey. Jin became Danny, a completely different person, and thought people would accept him. Yet they felt helpless because nothing changed. The Monkey King and Jin both tried to be accepted in their
I have really not had the opportunity to read graphic narratives or novels, comic books or anime. It was really interesting to read this week’s chosen book which was a graphic novel titles American Born Chinese. I was really excited to actually see the story of the Monkey King because growing up as a child that was one of the favorite T.V shows that I truly enjoyed from the start to the end of each episode. After reading this book, I have really given much appreciation to the authors of graphic novels or narratives. The story in the book American Born Chinese, is mainly about Jin but has other stories as well within the book. It initially starts with story of the Monkey King, and then it switches to Jin’s story in the second chapter. The story then switches to Danny’s story with a repetition of the same pattern.
already achieve his goal to be a king, he begins to be greedier to not
Since he's not white he probably thought he would get the same bad reaction out of Amelia as well. Meanwhile Jin thinks that if he becomes something that he's not Amelia will like him. In panels 3,4,5, and 6 on Page 97 Jin decides that the only way he’ll be able to successfully get Amelia is if he changes his appearance to look more like the Greg. He changes, and sees if she will take him now(Yang 97). Yang is showing that Jin is willing to pretend to be something he's not and make himself look like one of the cooler boys that Amelia hangs with to try to get
The main themes in this novel are family and friendship. For Liang it is the monkey man, for Jung it is Frank Yuen, and for Sekky it is his grandmother. For Chinese-Canadians in the 1930s and 40s, family is more than blood ties, close
Through the interaction between Wong Lai-Tsao and the Monkey King, Yang portrays the message that characters are trying to avoid being themselves. The novel focuses on character’s identities. The Monkey king deals with being stuck under a mountain for 500 years because he tried to be someone else. When the monkey king is stuck under the rocks, Wong Lai-Tsao visits the monkey king and states: “The form you have taken is not truly your own, return to your true form and you shall be freed” (Yang 145). Furthermore, Wong Lai-Tsao is alerting the Monkey king that he is not being his true form, which is what is causing him to suffer. Additionally the Monkey King’s response is extremely surprising. In panels five and 6, the Monkey king has an
It is often said that scepter is a dangerous and attractive thing in the history. Therefore, there are a lot of kings and nobles who fight because of the throne.Take Macbeth for example,he is a typical example to improve this.At first,he is a kind man,but he wants to be a king.To achieve this ambition, he kills a lot of people. On the way to the throne, Macbeth loses track of a lot of things include human nature. It demonstrates throne is a deadly attraction and to be a king is difficult. Nonetheless, there is a strong king that I like to refer to in the Lion King who is Scar. All of them want to become a king and they come true this ambition at last by using different strategies. For the different ways and personality,I have to say that
American Born Chinese was a book that I would have initially missed reading because it didn’t appeal to me then. However, it wasn’t until the three narratives intertwined at the end that I realized that this was a great read. Jin, Danny, and the Monkey King all have one thing in common; they try to become something they are not, and they lose their sense of identity until the realization of the truth that we cannot fight who we really are. Jin comes to America and desperately tries to fit in with his classmates and assimilate. The Monkey King tried to become something greater than himself, and become an equal with the other deities. Danny is what looks to be a normal high school student, but is plagued by his Chinese cousin’s visits
Some theorists believe that ‘power is everywhere: not because it embraces everything, but because it comes from everywhere… power is not an institution, nor a structure, nor possession. It is the name we give to a complex strategic situation in a particular society. (Foucault, 1990: 93) This is because power is present in each individual and in every relationship. It is defined as the ability of a group to get another group to take some form of desired action, usually by consensual power and sometimes by force. (Holmes, Hughes &Julian, 2007) There have been a number of differing views on ‘power over’ the many years in which it has been studied. Theorist such as Anthony Gidden in his works on structuration theory attempts to integrate basic
The story “Lady and the Tiger” has a king is semi barbaric, and only does what he wants to do. The king is not good at making decisions because he doesn't listen to others. “He was greatly given to self-communing, and when he and himself agreed upon anything, the thing was done”(Stockton 1). When he decides on something it is set in stone and no one can change it.
His foolish acts get him into five hundred years of trouble at the hands of Tze-Yo-Tzuh, and the Monkey King must then rely on the trust of a stranger to lead him toward redemption. In another story, Danny is a popular athletic teenager whose life is amazing until his cousin Chin-Kee arrives from China. Chin-Kee is the epitome of Chinese stereotypes—eating cat gizzards, excelling in classes, speaking in broken English—and Danny wants to hide him away and pretend he does not exist. But Chin-Kee ends up going to school with Danny every day, ruining Danny’s reputation. American Born Chinese undergoes phases of identity crises that are coupled with some sort of mental or physical transformation. This is a great novel to explore the diversity of students and how different elements affect their culture. The big question of the unit also allows for students to recognize stereotypes in order to see the implications that can have on the people the labels are placed on and how some labels may be placed on them for having a particular quality, gender, race, etc. The ending and tone of the novel also will help students with recognizing the need for accepting others while seeing that every person should seek for his or her own
Human Trafficking in the Three Social Lenses When one thinks of those two words, human trafficking, so many questions come to mind. What really is human trafficking? Is there more than one kind of it? How did it begin?
The civilization he meant to build has transmogrified to a forest thick with traps" (121). Not only has he lost his muscle, he's lost his peace of mind as well. The king has become trapped by everything he worked so hard to achieve. His bling, his solid rep, his fantastic crib, and even his methods of ruling become a target for younger, ambitious warlords. His beautiful wife, a peace offering from a young and resentful lesser king, might become a point of contention in the future.
