By applying the social power lens to American Born Chinese the message of the story the same but with a little extra “seasoning”. Though by saying the story doesn’t change, in a sense that we view it another way. Now by applying the social power lens to the characters this will put the most interesting view on the book. The Monkey King is torturing what seems to be a civilian. But to be interrupted by his creator, who shows him he has all power over the monkey. When applying the social power lens we see that the Monkey King believe he is truly to be respected and honored, but with the help of his creator is to rethink that thought. Though his creator tries he fails and traps him under a huge pile of rock tell he transforms back to himself. Though we realize the the King is not in fact at a higher status than his creator and the civilian, he does not see this until another civilian comes to try to free him. Jin believes because he looks to much like an Asian that Amelia wouldn’t go out with him. So he changes his hair for her, in the sense that he believes he is of a lower status. Meaning he does not believe in himself. When applying this lens we see that Jin believes he is of a lower status and he thinks he needs to change to get a girl. When a traveler insists he free himself the King gets upset. When the traveler is almost killed by two giants, the King is forced to free himself and save the traveler. Again the Monkey King believes he is of a higher status than the traveler. He soon realizes that from his stubbornness he is of the same status as the traveler. He is just in time to free the traveler so he doesn’t die. By applying the social power lens to the Monkey King situation we see at first he is selfish and believes he is the best but soon realizes he is the same as everyone else no better no
