The social norms of the 1800s are undoubtedly outdated and show the neglect of diversity throughout gender and race. This is seen vividly throughout Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations, specifically in the misrepresentation of women roles throughout the novel. While Pip follows his expectations by climbing and falling the social class ladder, the female characters are never even given a chance to rise or fall.
