"Because people have no thoughts to occupy theor minds, they occupy their minds with Facebook and social media. We have a nickname of these people, we call them idiots." -- Daniel Albright -- Professor Of Literature, Harvard Over the past decade, technological innovation has brought us into an era in which the social networking revolution is prominent in almost everyone’s life. The social networking revolution is a phenomenon that many people see as a breakthrough in technology that allows for simple communication and an easy way to keep in touch. In reality, this revolution has created a multitude of issues in our society, which people often overlook. This is an especially prominent issue amongst children born from the 1990s to …show more content…
First, social networking removes a lot of face-to-face interaction among individuals. This effectively creates less social beings that rely on social networking for communication and are less competent when it comes to in-person interaction. Social networking also allows for a sense of anonymity, which creates reckless morals and gives people the ability to say harmful things with no consequence. Finally, social networking is a major distraction and a huge waste of time. Children and adults often opt to spend their time on social networking sites rather than being productive members of society. These problems continue to get worse and will escalate if they are not addressed and solved immediately The first problem with social networking is that it takes away the aspect of face-to-face social interaction. When people have the access to social networking, they communicate through these means rather than traditional methods, including phone calls, letters, and even e-mails. We are able to take the easy way out by talking to people through Facebook, twitter, text messaging and many other convenient, yet less personal means of communication. Social networking may be convenient when time and distance are issues, but it simply is not the same and cannot replace phone calls and face-to-face communication (Coyle 15). Many people see the convenience aspect of social networking and overlook the fact
Social networking is the mainstream way to communicate with anyone. Teenagers are obsessed with social networking, no one calls each other unless it’s extreme circumstances or their mother. Sharing pictures, sharing life stories, and sharing opinions online has been the way of life and the norm for kids growing up with computers and smart phones. The parents to this generation have not grown up in the same environment and have different standards for online activity. In the Article “ 10 Reasons Why I Avoid Social Networking Services” written by Alan Norton, he lists why he does not use social networking services. His personal beliefs are backed up with statistics and hold true to many people in his generation but not in the younger ones.
Before getting started on the topic listed above, what exactly is Social Networking? A social networking service is reported as being an online service, platform, or site that focuses on building and reflecting social networks or social relations among people, who for instance might share common interests, activities, went to the same school, work at the same company and the list goes on. Although social networks can be useful; they can also be damaging to an individual’s career, personal life, and affect many other aspects of their lives. In this paper instead of discussing the positive of social networking, what about some of the more common negative
The rapid growth of technology in our society has become more dominant than it was in the 17th and 18th century. Today, technology is used for almost everything in our day to day lives. But the most common usage of technology is for communication and industrialization. However, every good thing has its disadvantage if it is over used, and since technology has become very dominant, it is used by both young and older people but more predominant among the youth of the today. Even more, technology has brought about social networking such as Facebook, Twitter, my space, piazza.com, instagram, tango, and last but not the least texting. According to socialnetworking.procon.org, “47% of American adults used social networking sites like
Technology has grown tremendously over the last years. This growth has brought with it different ways that individuals can use to communicate and keep in touch with each other. Social networking is one technology that has allowed people to share, keep in touch, and communicate. Social networking has also had an effect on business, society, and politics. It has been adapted and embraced quite quickly, which has brought numerous changes to the world. Unfortunately, not all these changes are for the better. There is little research regarding the effects that social networking is having on human relationships. People have been denied the opportunity to have meaningful social interactions with each other. Social networking has removed the need for physical interaction between people ADDIN EN.CITE Phillipson2004276(Phillipson, Allan and Morgan)2762766Phillipson, C.Allan, G.A.Morgan, D.H.J.Social Networks and Social Exclusion: Sociological and Policy Perspectives2004110 Cherry StreetAshgate9780754634294http://books.google.co.ke/books?id=hBaxP_FnB8wC( HYPERLINK l "_ENREF_3" o "Phillipson, 2004 #276" Phillipson, Allan and Morgan). People are now communicating more on social networks that they do in person. There is also the potential of people pretending whom they are on social networks. This would make them seem popular and interactive, though this is not the case in real life. It is clear that social networking has contributed

The day starts off by checking their profile to check their messages, blogs, readings, horoscopes and to, keep up with events such as marriage’s and graduations. Social networking is an excellent way of teaching young children families’ cultures and traditions. These marriage and graduation events have prompted 29 million parents to join in as well. (O’Dell,2011) Alisa Almas, a University of Toronto graduate student and a Facebook user, says, “Kids who have had a great relationship with their parents in real life volunteer information about their private and social world, and would more likely be on Face book.” (Kobayashi ,2011) Social networking has allowed family members to reconnect with friends, nuclear and extended family. According to a website called Pew Research Center who has experts in statistics, it stated “About a quarter of all U.S. adults (26%) get news from two or more social media sites, up from 15% in 2013 and 18% in 2016.” But what are the positive effects of social networking in our society? Social networking has become a major part of society. Many people wake up each day and check social media websites specifically throughout Twitter and Facebook first thing in the morning instead of reaching for a newspaper. Since people are spending such a large amount of time surfing social networks, it is important to point out some of the positive and negative effects that social networking can have on a society. And the other is social networking sites make people share everything that they want and bring people with common interests together, offer exposure to new ideas from around the world, and lower inhibitions to overcome social anxiety.
Social Networking has many effects on people’s personal lives. It can transform a small perspective into a view point looking into many different angles of ideas. Over time social media has changed; it’s made a drastic impact on society & has improved tremendously. When the word social networking comes to mind I think of bettering. You can further your education using social networking. Promotion of businesses and entrepreneurship opportunities have also been major keys that social media has been used for. The purpose of social networking was originally meant to open our eyes to the world, not blind us from reality. As the first generation to grow up with social networking, Generation Y is the best guinea pig to observe how humans begin to interact with one another while in constant global communication. Social networking has enabled the world to unify, spread ideas, communicate, and spread news quicker than ever before. Humans are now able to stay in touch while in completely different places. There is no more need to send letters or wait until the next day to read the newspaper because social media offers an instantaneous ability to inform the individual and the public. Additionally, people are now able to meet new “friends” through
While social networking does have value, it also has tremendous potential for negative influences in everyday society. The harm caused by social networking has skyrocketed over the last decade. There are no regulations to the content that can be posted or the immediate contact one can have with a stranger, leading to dangerous situations. This is a rising concern for the parents of young children as well as all who are part of social networks. The growing population has become overwhelmingly focused on the world of media and technology; most could not solve a simple math question, much less have a personal conversation with someone. While our schools are being downsized, the Facebook population is growing each and every day. A solution must be found before the doors of schools are closed, the interaction with one another face to face lessens, and the lives of teens with a good future are destroyed. There have been many solutions set up to overcome these obstacles, for example; blocking certain posts, privacy settings, and under age logs in denials. Fortunately, these have worked in some cases.
In today’s world it is very uncommon for someone not to have Facebook or some other type of social media outlet. People check their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram multiple times a day to stay up to date with the latest news, gossip, and lives of our friends and family. Social media is a huge part of our day to day lives and is often criticized for creating and amplifying issues such as cyber bullying, loss of privacy, distracting young children causing a decline in grades, and even social isolation. Although these arguments are valid and important to address, they become less daunting when compared to the positive effects social media has on our modern culture. Facebook has made it easier for society to become more connected with our friends, family and the world around us. It has brought us closer to long distant relatives, provides emotional support to people in need, keeps us updated on the latest news and political issues, provides new knowledge, and raises awareness on issues around the world. Facebook makes life convenient, entertaining and even more manageable.

In 1971, social media came into existence solely to serve the purpose of implementing efficient and speedy communication. The goals for social networking was made for simpler reasons such as business networking. The social network blossomed into much more, it no longer just served the purpose of communication, but as a venue for entertainment. Throughout the years, people have been oblivious to the benefits of social media but do not see how it taxes our growth. The supposed "thrills" of social media have created a lack of emotional connection, increased bullying, decreased face to face communication skills, and created a lack of privacy.
