Bill 135: The Future Of Social Media

For as long as a lot of us can remember people have been using social media. People put a large majority of their lives on Facebook or other social media websites or apps. Since they do that, anyone could go on someone’s account and find out a lot about them. College admissions officers and potential employers do it all of the time. College admissions officers and employers should look at social media accounts because it will help make their decision easier, they can see if the applicant could be a potential embarrassment, and can get a different view of the applicant that’s not on paper.

Social media has become a worldwide addiction. Some use social media to post their fondest moments; others to post private information not suitable for the world to know. This private information is sometimes discovered by important people like college admissions officers or potential employers. Research explains that most parents, employers, and colleges are not concerned about social media being a bad thing (Source D). Some would say it is an illogical practice to spy on people’s private profiles.

Social media popularity has risen over the past years. The majority of the population of the age, now possesses one or more social accounts. Various articles and news sources have indicated that social media deteriorates person to person interaction and are gateways for cybercrimes to occur. However, behind such negative statements social media does provide a plethora of benefits to society. In fact, social media permits individuals to communicate, provides opportunities for businesses, and educates society.

Social media platforms, movies, tv shows, and other forms of entertainment media have only continued to grow in popularity. With this ever-increasing availability has also come a drastic variety of ways to see both ourselves and other people; whether in a positive light or a negative one depends on the representation itself. While the media often perpetuates negative stereotypes, diverse representation can dramatically improve the self-esteem of those represented.

Online predators and Stalkers can easily gain access to social media users’ personal information by either requesting to be a user’s friend or simply finding a way around the user's privacy settings. According to June Ahn, chat rooms are public and is an unmonitored space where online predators are more likely to be. “Adolescents are less likely to be targeted for unwanted sexual solicitation in social media than chat rooms.”(Ahn, June) I have found that, 412 adolescents were more likely to talk with strangers. This is hazardous for young children and adolescents because their lack of life experience leads them to blindly accept all friend request. The effort to seem popular by having many friends online can damage credibility and truth worthiness.

Facebook is starting to “crack down” on fake news articles throughout the social media website. However, Katrina Trinko says, Facebook’s fact-checkers have a liberal bias. Trinko believes that many of the fake articles on Facebook are withholding information that is containing the whole truth. She believes that these “fact-checkers” are more likely to crack down on conservative views instead of the liberal views. According to the PEW research center, sixty-seven percent of Americans rely on social media for their news coverage (News use across social media platforms 2016: Jeffrey Gottfried and Elisa Sherer). While social media has been known to show “fake news”, this has a huge impact on the influence of the viewers (mostly being American teenagers). Whenever there has been fake news across Facebook, there are circumstances where the fake news will be shared. Although the person who shares the fake news may not realize that it is fake, the news is being shared causing people to believe that it is true. Facebook is reaching out to the conservative political action conference who are questioning the potential for bias news articles. Numerous students use the web for research, gathering information, school work, and most notably, social media. Social media is the core of socializing with others from around the globe. Schools are taking this to advantage to observe their students outside the campus. Therefore, when it comes to students’ activity in the online world, schools should not have the right to monitor the students’ online activity because it violates freedom of speech and privacy rights.

In today’s generation, due to a lack of preparation and understanding of fake news in our education programs, the youth seem to be putting all of their trust in the Internet and most cannot determine if a news article is biased or not; therefore, young people seem to be more susceptible to fake news. Teens use the Internet for everything these days, and they need to be well-equipped with many ways to determine real articles from fake ones.

In less than two decades, social media has revolutionized modern communication and information sharing. What began as a simple form of social networking has turned into innumerable platforms for people around the globe to share ideas, create and share businesses, promote brands, read news from various sources, as well as share and find vast amounts of information, among many other uses. Social media is used to denote platforms in which people build and share social connections; thus enhancing information sharing and interaction. Major examples include Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest and Instagram. Through social media, people can connect, interact and exchange information such as pictures, videos and other digital media by registering as users in these platforms and updating information affecting their lives on their profiles.
