Are you a victim of cyberbullying on the internet, or a victim of all the positive impact that social media can offer ? In the articles, “Student examines negative effects of social media on teens” by Aurelie Krakowsky, and the article, ¨the upside of selfies: social media isn't all bad for kids” by Kelly Wallace (CNN), the authors argue about how social media can be bad for kids but can also be very useful at some times. Over all social media can harmful in many ways; however there are more benefits that truly exceed them. Social media's main purpose is to connect with others and socialize in a spectacular, and modern way online. According to ¨the upside of selfies: social media isn't all bad for kids” by Kelly Wallace (CNN), Wallace interviews Eileen Masio, a mother of two in New York that are big users of instagram; social media. In the interview Masio states,” ‘i think as damaging as social media could be, it can… help to build self confidence, too,’ ” Masio also reveals an example of how social media builds self confidence,” ‘when they post selfies, all the comments I usually see are ‘Your beautiful,’ ‘You’re so pretty,’ oh my god gorgeous,’” evidently, this shows that social media doesn't just help connect people, but can also help build confidence to those who might need some, or think that they are less than what they are. …show more content…
According to Wallaces text, “ ‘they believe that social media helps their friendships, makes them feel more outgoing and gives them confidence,’” stated by common sense media’s director of digital media , this comes to show that one of the main purposes of social media, is making a drastic change in friendships, and that connecting and socializing online can help to make new friends and even connect with older ones, boosting the users' confidence and feel more outgoing and
The article “The Upside of Selfies: Social Media Isn’t All Bad for Kids” by Kelly Wallace discusses the positive impacts of social media. In the article, a mother is interviewed about her children’s social media use. She agrees that social media
We live in an era ruled by social media, primarily when it comes to teenagers, social media is used for everything. From communicating with family and friends to being used as a news outlet, and even advertisement for business and companies. This article is titled “Social Media: What's Not to Like,” written by Alison Pearce Stevens. The topic of this essay is the effect social media can have on teenagers. Social media, on one hand, can be used as a great way to share with the world and boost teens’ self-esteem. On the other hand, social media can be used as a place for bullying, body shaming and can cause depression or even suicide in teens.
Fact 1 is that people can feel like they are an important part of something with social media, while otherwise, they do not feel that way about themselves. From an article titled “The Upside of Selfies: Social Media Isn't All Bad for Kids”, they explain that,”In the survey of more than 1,000 13- to 17-year-olds about how they view their digital lives, 28% said social networking made them feel more outgoing versus 5% who said it made them feel less so; and 29% said it made them feel less shy versus the 3% who said it made them feel more introverted”(Wallace 2). That meant
In the article, “The Bad, the Ugly, and the Good of kids Use of Social Media,” Jim Taylor gives us a definition of the phrase internet addiction. He states, “Internet addiction is commonly characterized as excessive use of internet that interferes with daily functioning and that can lead to distress or harm,”. The addiction from the internet surely has a price to pay. Internet addiction is harmful psychologically, addictions to the internet shouldn’t be our only concern when it comes to social media, and internet addiction has no age limit.
To begin with, social media is bad for teens due to the negative feedback people get also known as bad comments. In the upside of selfies: Social media isn't bad for kids."It states that "4% of
The age of technology has provided the world a much easier life. The ability to communicate with others around the world or with someone locally with just a few taps is astonishing. Although with a lot of advantages with technology there are also a lot of disadvantages. The use of the internet sometimes can cause more harm than good in some cases. Cyberbullying is todays common type of bullying. Traditional bullying resulted in the form of aggressive behavior with the specific purpose of harming another over time. The main reasoning of this was the rush of power play that the tormentor would take pleasure in (Hase et al. 2015). Usually social media is an enjoyable place to be for young teens and adults. However, it’s very hard to predict what someone may see on the internet and how it can affect them. With the advances of technology and different social media websites available, a mass load of peers can connect with each other for good or for worse. This is where the disadvantages of technology come into play. Young people especially love to partake in the online world, it also helps them “fit in” and become updated with other peers’ lives.
"I am thankful my childhood was filled with imagination and bruises from playing outside instead of apps and how many likes you get on a picture" (Anonymous). In the 21st century, everyone's lives revolve around the next message or notification received from various social networking websites. It has become a societal norm to be glued to a screen, and face to face conversations are starting to become extinct. This is becoming a global issue as the world is constantly creating new ways to entertain people via technology. Out of all dangers, children are the most at risk when it comes to social media. Social media is extremely problematic to people everywhere because of the constant threat of online bullies, decreased privacy, and sexual
One of the most common practices among adolescents and young adults is the use of social media. This can be attributed to the many benefits and positive emotions felt by a user. In 2014 there were more than 1.53 billion users of social media across the world (Curtis as cited in El-Badawy & Hashem). Moreover, in Australia, the use of social media by young people has significantly higher rates than many of their counterparts overseas (Green et al as cited in Salter, Crofts & Lee, 2014). Further, there has been a lot of deliberation about this use and whether it is actually beneficial to young people. This essay argues that social media poses a greater risk to the wellbeing of a young person and outweighs the benefits a young person may receive.
New ways of communication over the Internet has grown severely and have brought negative and positive responses to the society around us. In particular, these social networks have become popular in the teen and young adult age group. Social networks has also been popular in unsatisfactory new reports where teens have been cyber bullying, posting inappropriate pictures, and promoting serious cases such as suicide. Social networks include, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, Wikipedia,Yik Yak, Pinterest, MySpace, YouTube, Tumblr, Blogs, etc. In Researching my argument, I 've found many bad news stories about social networks, but not many positive stories. Social networks are represented as bad influence towards our society. Although some people use social networks in a negative way, there are others who use them positively and my argument will explain how. To support my argument I will use Twitter as an example of how social media can be used in a positive way by promoting writing practices, informing others, and being a sponsor of literacy.
Social media is everywhere, you see it on YouTube videos, food products, television commercials, or stores persuading you to, “Follow us on Instagram.” or “Like us on Facebook.” Today, it has become increasingly common for kids to own smartphones at a young age and have Instagram accounts. Wherever you go, you see kids checking their phones and seeing if the picture they posted has enough likes. A few decades ago, not many people had phones, social media has made it possible for unlimited information and communication to be easily accessible and shared. However, social media creates body image for girls and boys and may lead to cyberbullying.
One of the distinct benefit of social media is social media helps us to build relationship with new people. We could meet with new people who have the same interests as us and that could be the starting point of a great friendship and/or relationship ( Carlos Vieira, n.d. ). This is because social
Despite the positives, there are many negatives associated with social media. Using social media can make a person more vulnerable to predators and cyber bullying. In this age, “Cyber bulling is quite common, can occur to any young person online, and can cause profound psychosocial outcomes including depression, anxiety, severe isolation, and tragically suicide” (“American Academy of Pediatrics”). Cyber bullying impacts society in a negative way because it is harming young teenagers’ minds. Bullies, torment, threat, harass, and even embarrass their victims by using different forms of social media. Using social media can also decrease privacy for an individual. People often give out their personal information not knowing who can see it. To average internet users, “A false sense of security may leave social networking site users vulnerable to security attacks such as hacking, leaking sensitive information, and sending viruses” (“ProCon”). Furthermore, Social media can also lead to brain disorders and can cause people to have a hard time interacting with people face to face. “Social networking entices people to spend more time online and less time talking to a person face to face.” (“ProCon”)
Children have malleable minds. Videos posted to social medias and its surrounding media influence a child’s learning and their behavior on a daily basis. Social media has amazing benefits as well as detrimental drawbacks. Social media helps children learn easier and teaches them how to behave correctly in multiple situations. More shows are being directed toward children, but some of those shows may have been created from disturbing minds. Shows such as Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ren and Stimpy, and other late 1990s shows now are not suitable and accepted among some parents. Such shows corrupt the children’s young minds and introduce unacceptable behaviors. Other technologies such as electronic books (E-books) have a more positive effect on a child’s mind; whereas the demented shows have a negative effect. Social media can teach inappropriate behavior and give children an unrealistic outlook on certain subjects.
Parents often warn their children not to post too much personal information on the internet. Common reasons for this include a parent’s fear that a child is giving out sensitive and personal information or that a child is opening themselves up to predators. In more recent years another reason has been added. With the invention of the internet, in the 90s, and with the rise of usage of social media, a parental fear is that their child will post the wrong thing and be denied a job or entrance into their choice university. A mature and job-seeking twenty-three-year-old can pay for the posts of an immature and dependent fifteen-year-old. Youth are often warned that “what they put on the internet is there forever” and that “just because you delete something doesn’t mean that it’s gone forever”. The idea that what’s posted or written on the internet exists forever has, most commonly, been presented as a negative. What if it could be presented as a positive as well? Ashely Ellis writes on the topic of the infinity of the internet in her essay, Transcending Time and Death: Immortality in a Simulated World.
Over the years more and more students have joined the Social Media phenomenon, making students the largest age group that use it. It is estimated that young people aged between 16 and 24 spend more than 27 hours a week on the internet (Anderson, 2015). Spending this amount of time on the internet exposes users to health issues such as anxiety, sleeping problems and depression. Students often find themselves in a pressurised state, as a result of the demand of immediate replies to posts and comments on Social Media accounts. While the need to follow trending topics and conversations lead to lack of sleep and later anxiety problems. The suggested average hours of sleep is 9hours per night to allow the body and brain time to function again,
