Social media brought advancements to human communication, but the impact on how much it can reduce face-to-face communication is great. Through technological advancements, online communication, shopping, banking, and many more became easier to access. These are all advantages to humans because it allows them to process all they need through their mobile phones or laptops, however, social media brings some disadvantages to society. Although everyone wants the easier way of life, each improvement of technology reduces the amount of time people come out of their ways to meet with people. In some ways, media can be looked at in a positive manner. People are able to access information, communicate faster, and give ideas for those who have trouble with creativity. From a positive view on media, it can allow people to “…gain knowledge in a broader scene, and also get or collect information of the world in the fraction of second” (“Impact of Media,” 2012). Information needed for research papers or homework is time consuming and difficult to find through paper references or in the library, but by one click on the internet, all information can be obtained in the matter of seconds. Additionally, it allows people to communicate with each other 24/7 and it does not require them to meet in person. Some other benefits since the advancement of social media are being able to communicate with others across the world, and across different languages. Many people use social media as way to connect with their families and friends who may be living in different parts of the world. Additionally, social media made it more accessible for those who speak different languages to come together. Social media made it easier for people to interact on a global scale. Technology improved in many ways, but there are some side effects to the increasing use of social media. Connecting through the social network is enjoyable, but it lowers the opportunities for people to interact in person. In Caron Reider’s article, he mentions that generations are learning to connect on social media and “social media can facilitate face-to-face conversations with others; however, it can also serve as a replacement for such interactions” (Reider, 2014).
