The Civil War happened because of slavery but thats not the only reason. America was on the road to war. (Crash Course #18) After Lincoln became the president, Southerners felt they had no power political system that was controlled by voters in the North that they felt no connection to.The many difference between the North and South caused conflict that eventually led to war. The social differences between the north and the south were huge and caused much conflict. One of the main parts of the social differences was the view on slavery. Slavery was more popular in the South and enslaved African Americans lived in rural areas working on small farms and plantations doing a variety of jobs. One of the major differences was cotton over manufacturing. Cotton was big in the south because southerners felt that agriculture was so profitable that industrial development was not needed.(CivilWar.org) In the North the soil and climate was favored for small farmsteads bur manufacturing of products was a big part of the economy.(CivilWar.org) Cotton though was grown on plantations with slaves labor to pick the cotton and process it on a daily basis. The manufacturing of items did not need slaves to work many free blacks often worked in the factories for pay. Which comes to the next piece over slave labor over wage labor. Wage labor is the when you work and you get paid for the amount of time or days you worked. Slave labor is being owned by a person or persons and not getting paid and having strict rules for your work. Another economical difference was transportation in the area. One source of transportation was the train. In the north there was about 50,000 miles of track while in the South there was only about 10 to 15 thousand miles of track. ( America the Story of Us: Civil War) Also in the South there were steamboats that shipped cotton around the country. The North had more train transportation but the South used the steamboat. Economic differences were large, but the political differences led them to the pushing point of …show more content…
First of all, the political leaders of the North and the South had different views of how the country should turn out in the end. A leader from Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner who was a northerner who wanted to abolish slavery and South Carolina Representative Preston Brooks who was a southerner who believed slavery was morally correct. Brooks attacked Sumner with a cane until he was unconscious on the in the senate chambers for Sumner criticized pro-slavery supporters.(Deverell and White, 449) Brooks was a pro-slavery supporter and had beat or harmed other men before because they disapproved of slavery.(Deverell and White, 448-449) Slavery once again was the main source of the conflict between these regions. Secondly, the people among the hole political system the Republicans (Free Soilers) and the Southern Democrats. The Republicans were Northerners who opposed slavery while, the Southern Democrats were in favor of slavery. This caused problems in Supreme Court rulings. Especially the Dred Scott decision. This was to determine if this certain black man was free or a slave but the majority of the Justices were Southerners which ruled the man a slave.(Deverell and White, 451-452) Lastly, the different beliefs of the political figures in the system. The Southerners felt that slavery was needed for life to continue normally, while the Northerners believed that slavery was morally wrong and that
Among the economies of the north and south arose many conflicts that led to the tension of the Civil War in 1861. In the 1800s, slavery was a major sectional issue. Northerners were strongly opposed to slavery unlike the south's belief that slavery was economically beneficial.
In the south, for social, they still had problems with race. New laws made it hard for southern African Americans to enjoy the improvements of transportation. Politically, there were laws that allowed segregation and made it really hard for African Americans to enjoy their free life. economically, although the south remained mostly agricultural the south began to develop timber industries, also because there main source of profit was slaved, after slavery was abolished that took away a lot of the South’s major income, also iron and coal deposits in the southern Appalachian mountains gave rise to steel production in Alabama.
The North and South both had opposite opinions about slavery, The South favored slavery because of there agricultural based economy which they needed slaves to attend to their harvests and crops, the North was against slavery because they were an industrialized nation they had no need for slavery. This debate went on and almost resulted
The North attracted many people for religious reasons and eventually developed a profitable shipbuilding industry based on the natural forests and harbors. More people who were interested in profit inhabited the South. This lead to the importation of a lot of slaves. Women's and slaves rights differed too, the South had fewer women so they were treated better, and the North had fewer slaves so they were not treated as bad. But overall both regions profited and lived happily off their
In conclusion we had a civil war because of slavery, sectionalism and compromises. Slavery was the big cause because the North said free and South said never!! But then that is what caused sectionalism and the North said better economy and South said never. Then compromises and the North said Never and the South said forever. But then the South later paid for it. The South was not right to secede from anything at
While the North was more industrial, the South was more rural. Slavery was a much more common practice in the South. This situation quickly escalated into a civil war between the North and the South.
There was a big difference between the North and South referring to the economy. Northern states had small farms, but they were expanding and becoming more industrialized. Southern states on the other hand, started making farming their only income. It was difficult to find people willing to work on the farm, so they started forcing African American slaves to work for them. Almost all the Southern population were getting whipped on their back and chains on their neck. Things were different from the Northern Population they weren't
ship the cotton but this meant that the South had to pay the North to
Throughout the 19th century, the distinctions between the North and South in the United States were controversial. Prior to the Civil War, the North consisted of business owners and middle-class men. The South consisted of mostly farmers. The North was industrial, using railroads and factories. The South was agricultural, with mostly farms and plantations. The North paid their labor workers. The South used slaves. Not only did their opposing views on slavery and the separation of the two cultures, tensions arose that eventually led to one of the most gruesome wars in history.
Free slave in the north and south had different rights and freedom to flex those said rights. In the north people were more or less neutral to the presence of blacks. Blacks in the north could hold gatherings and attend church both of which you cannot do in the south. However, most blacks voluntarily joined the military despite the numerous discrimination laws against them in the north. They also come outspoken abolitionists which is what they were known for most in the Antebellum period.
The antebellum era exposed the entirely different views and ways of life between the North and the South. These differences can be observed on the economic aspect. The North was industrialized enabling them to have functioning economy without the use of many labors; however, in the south, people relied on agriculture, and thus they needed a large number of slaved labors to help them work on the plantations. Such difference led to the main distinction which existed throughout the entire Civil War, the dependence on the slavery. These differences sparked conflict between the North and the South placing them in an indisputable position, eventually leading to the Civil War. The prosecution of the Civil War of North and South differed drastically. The North fought to preserve the Union which entailed abolishing slavery, enlisting the black in the army and also paying them proper wages, and the South fought to withdraw and preserve slavery and their agricultural lifestyle. These conflicting views did not disappear after the war. Although the North won the Civil War, they still wanted to unify the country, not only territorially, but also economically and politically by enforcing many new laws and amending the Constitution. And the South, even after the abolishment of slavery, people in the south remained hostile toward the freed people, saw themselves more superior than the freed people, and tried to resurrect the “Old South”.(192~198) To achieve the real union and realize the
The most important difference between the north and south was the issue of slavery. The South was primarily agricultural, and the southern economy was based upon the existence of large family farms known as
The civil war was mainly sparked by tensions between the north and the south. Both sides rarely agreed on topics and could never make a compromise. Slavery was a big reason for the start of the civil war, but the causes don’t end there. Although some may say that political or economic reasons started the civil war between the north and the south, political reasons were the real cause. This is because of important decisions made by the government, and the south seceding.
The Civil War was caused by many several pressures, principles, and prejudices, fueled by sectional differences, and was finally set into motion by a most unlikely set of political events. From economic differences to political differences all the way up to cultural differences, the North and the South opposed each other. These tensions were further increased after the western expansion of the United States. By the early 1850’s a civil war was known to be likely coming soon.
So many people wanted slaves, especially in the South. They had more farms than they could handle on their own. Northern owners wanted them because they would have to do less work. Very few owners treated their slaves nicely and paid them to do work around the house. They would not be treated like family but would get treated a whole lot better than your “typical slave.” Those kinds of circumstances occurred more in the Northern states than the Southern states.
