In our book it states that social comparison is, “ the process of comparing oneself with others (Floyd, 2011, p.79).” Everyday people do this whether they are comparing themselves to whom they see on TV or the people they are around day to day. Our book refers to this as a reference group. “The group of people with whom one compares oneself in the process of social comparison,” is the definition of reference group (Floyd, 2011, p. 79). As a child I compared myself to the sporty or popular crowd. Now as a college student I tend to compare myself to a more knowledgeable and well-disciplined group of people. Neither now nor back when I was in high school was it ever effective or appropriate to compare myself to the sporty or ‘in crowd’. I was never in any sports. Although when I was in seventh grade I tried out for the cheerleading team, but unfortunately did not make it. I was just never cut for sports I guess. I was in the show choir though which I really enjoyed. That is a reference group that I could be appropriately compared too. Everyday that I have a class on campus I am there on time and have the homework that was assigned the week before done and ready to be turned in. For my online classes I always do all of my work and have it turned in by its weekly deadline. In going to my classes’ everyday and having my homework done it shows that I take on the full responsibility of my education. With my online classes it shows that I am well disciplined because I stay on top of my work and am still able to make good grades in all of my classes. Online classes take lots of dedication because you are basically teaching yourself so you really have to stay on top of
