In China, it was during the Han dynasty that people dribbled leather balls by kicking it into a small net. Football as well as soccer are believed to have descended from the ancient Greek game of Harpaston which was a form of game played in the Roman Empire.
The official rules of soccer were founded in England ("A Brief History of Soccer"). Although we are not sure when or how it originated, evidence dating back nearly three thousand years ago in China shows that a small fur stuffed leather ball was used as the official game piece of a purely foot based activity with the overall objective being to score into opposite teams net likely known as Tsu Chu. The brutality of the sport grew over time as the games overall principles were toyed with, causing more injuries and controversy with higher powers in England, during the ruling of King Edward, resulting in expulsion and arrest if caught participating in the sport ("A Brief History of Soccer"). Hundreds of years later the popularity in the sport had grown tremendously in England, allowing teams to be formed in schools. Soon after, the Americans started to
While the current popularity of the sport is hardly denied, very few people know of its origins. According to a 2009 New Frontier documentary, soccer is believed to have originated about 2,500 years ago in China during the Han Dynasty. It was called “cuju” (zu-joo). In the documentary, Mr. Ma Guoqing, curator at Linzi Football Museum in China, states that the original rules were based on nature. For instance, a ball was used because the sky was circular and a square court because the earth was believed to be square. Just as there were twelve months in a year, twelve players would be in the game of cuju, six players for each team. The game was extremely violent, allowing players to collide aggressively with each other without any penalties. Not surprisingly, in the beginning, the sport was practiced by soldiers only, not by the common people or by nobility, as it would later be the case. The objective was to put the ball into a
Pilgrims saw the Native Americans playing a form of soccer in Massachusetts in the early 1600s. The Pilgrim’s form of soccer was partly based on the American Indian’s version of soccer. The Pilgrim’s form of soccer was played with many different variations of soccer balls. For example, the ball varied from rubber to leather and even human heads. The Pilgrims brought more formal soccer to the US and helped set up the game.
Since its conception, soccer continues to dominate the global sports scene. As of 2015, 265 million people play soccer in the world. This widely known game was invented two centuries ago in England and quickly became one of the most popular sports in the world. Soccer is also exceptionally influential in the political world. The sport has the capability to spark war and bring peace to entire nations. Along with its effects on the political world, soccer is also a considerable part of many cultures. The daily lives of people culturally and politically would be vastly different if it weren’t for the major influence of soccer.
U.S soccer started when the English settlers came to populate America. The game was originally played across an entire town with two nets at either end. Players tackled each other to get the ball to one end of the town and in a
Though soccer is played in many countries all around the world the place it was developed and codified in is England. Even though soccer was being played thousands of years ago, the sport didn’t experience mass expansion until it reached England. While the sport was still in early development, rules were not truly implemented which brought about some violent behaviors between the players, ultimately resulting in the sport being banned by the king at the time, King Edward III. This ban was set into place around the year of 1365. This ban was introduced to Scotland a few decades later. Around the year of 1424, Scotland 's King James I decided that no man will be allowed to play football (“football” is how many foreign countries have named soccer).
The soccer history dates back to more than thousands of years ago to the ancient China. Later, countries such as Greece, Central America as well as Rome have claimed to have been the origin of soccer. However, England is the country that have developed soccer to what we know today as football. Britain was the first country to develop the initial rules on uniform for soccer as well as stopping players from tripping their opponents and using their hands to touch the ball unless one was the goalkeeper. More rules have been developed and more landmarks set as the sport developed. For instance, according to the FIFA website, the penalty kick was first introduced in 1891 (Huggins, 2007). The yellow and red cards were
Soccer (Football) is the most popular and fastest growing sport in the world. Over 240 million people play it regularly around the world. However, most people only get to view one side of soccer in their lifetime. They never get a glimpse of it in any other setting. For many people soccer is a very competitive organized sport. For others it is an everyday, fun activity. In some countries, soccer is their life, while in others it is just a sport. I am going to address how it is different around the world and the reasons for this.
In the late 1700s and early 1800s, England had soccer that at this time was in between rugby and soccer. It was more so similar to rugby yet they couldn’t run with the ball until 1823. The term try, meaning the goal or score, also was made round this time. The sport that rugby broke away from was soccer. Rugby wasn’t an official game until 1863. Matches were played under informal rules. (Rugby History, 1)
It regained support in the nineteenth century as many prestigious schools in England started playing it, albeit each school with different rules. Finally, in 1863, the Football Association was established and a clear set of rules were created for the game. What perhaps started out as an exercise used by the Chinese became a full-fledged sport, and afterwards began to rapidly evolve. Professionalism was instated by 1885, and the creation of the beautiful game of soccer that is watched by millions today was well on its way.
