Have you ever wondered what it was like to be a Blacksmith and a Munitions maker on a sugar plantation in the mid to late 1800s? During the excavations conducted at the Levi Jordan Plantation In Brazoria County, Texas, a cabin was investigated that indicates it was utilized as the residence of an individual that worked lead, manufactured lead shot, and possibly other metals. This cabin has been labeled as the “Smith’s Cabin”. It has been shown, that munitions were being made within ths cabin; specificially shot. The mold that was found within this cabin is for shot/mini ball. It seems that this individual was making and modifying existing munitions in order to be utilized in the slave/tenant quarters pertained to muskets and possibly flintocks. …show more content…
This area was semi-rectangular in shape and may have been where “the bed” was located. Some small bed springs were found within this area, and a post mold was located in this area which permitted for a wood frame bed to have been nailed. The surface plots of artifact distrobutions delineate this area, except for personal artifacts. Within this particular area, there is a concentration of personal artifacts. It can be infer that these artifacts may have been stored under the frame, thus leaving a concentration of personal artifacts in this area after the cabin was abandoned. Although, it may not be proven that a bed was located in this area some of the artifacts that were found seem to suggest this. The delineation of this area shown in the distrobutions of different artifact deposits such as the abandonment deposit, glass deposit, and bone deposit seems to confirm that in this area some type of internal furnishings existed. At the same time, the concentration of personal items within this area seems to suggest that some personal artifacts may have been stored in this area. Therefore, even if this area was used as a sleeping area, it appears that some personal objects such as slate board, clothing and belt buckles were stored this in this area. In all, there is evidence which allows for the conjecture that this area may have been used for a sleeping
The Levi Jordan Plantation was established in 1848 and was abandoned in about 1888. Some artifacts that were found on the plantation were Coins, Rings, Bone Saw Frame, and Slave Tag. Some caches were found, in them were shells, animal bones, wine bottles, copper, metal objects, cast iron pans, grapes, and tobacco pipes. Some pots were also found in what is thought to be the Blacksmith's Cabin, next to the Hearth. It was probably used to bake clay and for warmth. In the blacksmith's Cabin Bullet Molds, Metal Tools, Arrowheads, and some toys were found, leading people to believe that there were children there. The arrowheads were probably not used for hunting because
The novel Uncle Tom's Cabin was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe and published in the United States in 1852. The novel depicted slavery as a moral evil and was the cause of much controversy at the time and long after. Uncle Tom's Cabin outraged the South and received praise in the North. The publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin was a major turning point for the United States which helped bring about the Civil War.
Incorporating Mississippi Works Progress Administration Slave Narratives, the diary of Emma Finley, and excerpts of the Finley family cookbook from 1858 with artifact evidence found at the Hugh Craft House from the foundation repair in 2008 and excavation artifacts from Fall 2014 and Spring 2015, together, will give a greater insight to the foodways of the Craft family and slaves residing on the site. The purpose of this paper is to examine the artifacts collected, cataloged, and analyzed thus far from the Hugh Craft house and slave dwelling site and compare the findings to analysis of slave diets throughout the south up until 1860 to determine if the Hugh Craft family and their nine slaves shared food or food patterns.
A. Harriet Beecher Stowe was born in 1811 in Litchfield, Connecticut, which surprises many of her readers. Stowe writes so passionately about slavery that it seems that she must have been raised in the South. Stowe was born into a strong Christian family, which explains why her novels have a strong Christian basis.
In addition to all of those weapons that were found, there were a lot of artifacts. Since the Levi Jordan Plantation was established in 1848, there are only a few artifacts that aren’t damaged. One of the undamaged artifacts is carved bone that is based on African religious sites across the south. These indicate the status for these four particular slave cabins. They were thought to be the blacksmith, political leader, curer/conjurer, and the carver. The Political Leader was like our mayor or governor and made most of the important decisions. The Curer was probably more based on South African legend than true medical remedies. He was most likely a little bit like our pastor, in that he conveyed religious beliefs to the other enslaved people. The carver worked a little bit with the curer and made him some carvings, but
The Levi Jordan Plantation was established in 1848 and was abandoned in 1888, probably because of mistreatment by Levi Jordan. Some artifacts that were found on the plantation included coins, rings, bone saw frame, and a slave tag. Some caches were found, and in them were shells, animal bones, wine bottles, copper, cast iron pans, grapes, and tobacco pipes. Pots were also found next to the hearth, in what is thought to be the Blacksmith's Cabin. The heath was probably used to bake clay and for warmth;it was the center of activity in the cabin. In the blacksmith's cabin, bullet molds, metal tools, arrowheads, and some toys were found, leading people to believe that there were children there. The arrowheads were probably not used for hunting because they had guns, and it's much harder to hunt with a bow than guns. It is thought that they might have been used to make the bullets the right shape, as they were found next to the bullets. Some animal remains found on the plantation led people to believe that the guns were not just used for war, but also for hunting. Another type of thing that was found near the Levi
While it is impossible to truly elaborate or even go into much detail on the exploits of Captain John Smith’s life, in this paper I will be covering several of his many achievements. In addition, I will be dispelling several of the popular myths in regards to his life that many modern day Americans believe in. Some of these more modern day myths or false narratives are due to his story being adapted and changed in order to make a children’s video by Disney, while others have been debated by historians ever since they were penned by Smith in one of his most famous works consisting of six volumes: The Generall Historie of Virginia, New-England, and the Summer Isles.
The leadership strengths and weaknesses of John Smith evoked a profound effect on the Jamestown colony. The fact that Smith actually arrived in the colony as a common prisoner and was able to achieve the leadership role that he gained is amazing. His creativity and knowledge in certain areas actually saved the colonists from attack and starvation in the early days. Some of the rules he enforced as a leader were actually instrumental in saving the colony. His skill in dealing with the natives allowed him to gain their support and continue trade that resulted in the survival of the colony.
Perry Smith is perhaps the nicest, most gentle-hearted man I've ever met in my life. If he and I were to have met under different circumstances, I would never have hazarded a guess that this kind man could be a cold-blooded killer. He's such a gentle man that it startles me to think that a man such as he would ever so much as touch a hair on a human head. However, it is the story of his past that lends credence to the fact that he slaughtered four members of the Clutter family. Built up emotions of hatred and rejection have been bottled up inside of him for so long, that he sometimes explodes with little cause. Although he appears soft on the outside, it is the build up of emotion
1. Joss Whedon says that ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ is “your basic horror movie taken apart; five kids go to a cabin in the woods to have a fun weekend of partying and possibly sex… and are therefore dismembered”. Whedon and Goddard have in essence tried to create a movie with roots tied to the horror genre; it is simply your common slasher movie where the characters are killed off one by one till there is either one person left or none for that matter. ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ also has ties to other genres such as comedy, this can be seen in scenes such as where they are all sitting around in the main room, playing truth or dare, and Jules is dared to kiss the wolfs head on the wall, also in the scene where Marty
One was the best seller that captured all audiences, the other an unfiltered narrative telling of the slavery experience, although contrasting, both caused tensions that led to their popularity and why they are still read today. Uncle Tom’s Cabin is a novel about a slave who embarks on a journey south and discovers how slavery is different in the disparate parts of the south. Meanwhile, Eliza, a mulatto enslaved woman runs away to ensure a better life for her son Harry by fleeing to Canada. The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is a narrative written by a former slave who became an abolitionist. Similarly to Uncle Tom’s Cabin, it depicts the dehumanizing effects of slavery upon the master and likewise the slave. Both stories illustrate how misconceptions and faith in religion play a role in confusing as well as giving hope to the characters described. These two stories can be contrasted as you may contrast Martin Luther King and Malcolm X; one portrays a more moderate tone while the other gives us the full fledged exhibit of slavery. Although they are both unique and tell different stories of the lives of enslaved African Americans and their masters, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” as well as Frederick Douglass’s The Narrative and Life of Frederick Douglas both capture the essence of slavery in the 1800s and give us two points of view of religion and the dehumanizing effects of slavery.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe, is arguably the most influential novel in American History. Stowe’s sentimental writing style seized the imagination of her readers and Uncle Tom’s Cabin became the standard of the abolition movement. Uncle Tom, one of the protagonists, spreads Christianity and dies for his faith, like Christ. By equating Uncle Tom with Jesus Christ, Harriet Beecher Stowe deliberately provokes her audience to social change and abolition.
Published in the early 1850’s, Uncle Tom’s Cabin had a huge impact on our nation and contributed to the tension over slavery. It was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, a woman who was involved in religious and feminist causes. Stowe’s influence on the northern states was remarkable. Her fictional novel about slave life of her current time has been thought to be one of the main things that led up to the Civil War. The purpose of writing it, as is often said, was to expose the evils of slavery to the North where many were unaware of just what went on in the rest of the country. The book was remarkably successful and sold 300,000 copies by the end of its first year. It is even rumored that
Adam Smith born the year 1723 was thought to be one of the world’s greatest economists. In Fact he was known as the father of economy. He was also known by the way he thought and the way he wrote about the country's economy and in this paper I will explain the way he described and the way he thought of the economy and why his thoughts have carried on for the last two hundred years.
