The type of veterinarian I am interested in is a small animal veterinarian that works with animals such as dogs, cats, birds, lizard, etc. Small animal veterinarians have similar but different duties as a large animal or mixed animal vet. The major duties of a small animal veterinarians are performing exams, neutering/spaying, suturing wounds and. These jobs have a step by step process on how they are performed on non-human animals. These three steps are commonly done by a small animal veterinarian in an animal clinic.

Veterinarians treat diseases, disorders, and injuries that non-humans animals have. Pet owners centuries ago trusted “priests, shepherds, and healers to protect” the animals in Egypt (). The people who carried for the animals passed on the knowledge that was gained through writing. Egypt’s Kahun papyrus; a collection of documented writing, “dated back to about 1900 B.C.”(). It's the oldest and most famous world addressing veterinary medicine” (). The Egypt's Kahun papyrus explains “livestock diseases and treatments”, as well as illness of dogs, birds, and fish (). During the late-eighteenth century, pets’ life improved. People during this time began to see themselves as “caretakers of the natural rather than controllers of it”, which led to the adoption of small animals as companions “creating a need of their health care”(). The first vet school was established in Europe being the “first scientific veterinary schools in 1762” (). As of today, veterinarians treat small pets that continue to grow in population. There are about twenty three different types of veterinarians; ones who work with small animal, ones who work with large animal and ones who don’t work with animals at all and just work in a lab with non-human animals’
