Slim is a contrast between the 99% of people and a 1% who lead the rest. Almost how FDR was the president to lead us out of the Great Depression, Slim leads the protagonist out of hard times and this is shown because he is seen at every major junction in the story, from the death of Candy’s dog, to George’s final decision. He guides George and the rest throughout the book. Slim is the moral compass and leader within Steinbeck’s classic story, showing that empathy and wisdom can still exist within the struggle of the Great Depression.
Slim has certain qualities that make him what he is, and one of them is wisdom. He was consulted for anything, and everything, “His authority

While the other men are very much caught up in their own problems, he notices other people. After the death of Curley’s wife, Slim simply looks at George and says “ ‘Maybe like that time in Weed you was tellin' about,’ ” (Steinbeck 48) showing that he is capable of seeing the big picture rather than what people want to assume about others, such as Lennie. This allows Slim to understand the thoughts of those around him rather than simply making rash decisions. Slim also notices more about the world around him than anyone else, “ His ear heard more than was said to him, and his slow speech had overtones not of thought, but of understanding beyond thought”(Steinbeck 14). The here mentioned understanding means that Slim is able to provide good advice to those around him. His astuteness and overall understanding allow him to provide leadership and moral support to the other characters, such as George. But there is more to it than that.
As we know he likes to get straight to the point. So another one of his personality traits is directness. For example ‘ Slim said, ‘’You hadda George. I swear you hadda. Come with me.’’ He led George into the entrance of the trail and up toward the
John Steinback’s Of Mice and Men is a book that describes the chase of the American Dream. Although achieving the American Dream is a great desire for all, seldom does it actually come true. George and Lennie, the two main characters in the book, have a goal of pursuing their version of the American Dream, as do many other characters. However, due to relationships and other conflicts, that dream is not achieved.
Character Analysis: Mice of Men- Slim John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men utilizes the character as a compassionate companion that provides guidance and understanding towards each troubled character set during the Great Depression. Slim is present at all of the main events that occurred in the book, infusing the divine and secure viewpoints that leaks one major event to the next. When Slim is introduced to the story, his importance is evident: “...he moved with a majesty only achieved by royalty and master craftsmen.” (Steinbeck p33).
You can judge a society by its treatment of the old, the weak, the helpless and the needy. Through the narrative conventions of foreshadowing and characterisation, John Steinbeck, in his novel Of Mice And Men, published in 1937, is able to effectively reveal the imperfections of America’s capitalist
Although Of Mice and Men definitely teaches young students about how the setting was set up back then, the themes of abuse and death included could be found highly inappropriate or offensive to young students today. These themes arise from the multiple abusive and gory deaths of characters throughout the novel. For example, the novel included a reoccurring scene of murder of innocent animals by Lennie including mice and puppies. Some readers are not able to handle such grimness, therefore finding it repugnant or simply unacceptable. Readers with their own pets may also feel a terrible sense of guilt and repulsiveness by simply reading the novel. Another example is portrayed when Lennie violently kills Curley’s wife by shaking her to death.
Power is usually measured through physical power and mental power. Several different kinds of power appear in the book, and Steinbeck shows clearly how each of them carries with it a heavy responsibility,Though not every character is able to measure up to this with success powers. By how the characters act and how they treat each other shows what powers they have.
Hope and despair are major themes in Steinbeck’s novella ‘Of Mice and Men’. The novella is set in 1930’s America which was a time when the effects of the Wall Street Crash impacted many people’s lives. Due to the fact that it was so hard to secure a job, a sense of distrust and despair was present among itinerant workers. In Steinbeck’s novella, these feelings of desperation manifest themselves in nearly all of the characters. This essay will discuss Slim and Lennie; two characters that defy the widespread depression of the time by giving either the reader or other characters hope.
Slim´s authority: Persistence makes the best worker The accomplishment of an aim or purpose requires persistence as everyone knows. John Steinbeck’s character Slim from the novel “ Of Mice and Men” is the best worker on the ranch. The story and the development of Slim in the book shows how he is handling several situations with persistent authority.
He respects and honors other people, and he is “a jerkline skinner , the prince of the ranch, capable to driving ten, sixteen, even twenty mules with a single line to the leaders.” (33) He is a powerful person or an authority figure in the ranch. He knows much about the ranch, so people around him always respect him. We can also say if he is the most experienced farmer in the ranch because Steinbeck mentioned directly that he is “the prince of the ranch.” (33) Furthermore, Slim also a smart person. He can decide the best decision in the bad situation. For example, when Lennie accidentally kill Curley’s wife, he decides the best way to solve the problem is to kill Lennie. When George tries to find the other way to solve the problem, Slim says that is possible but “they [will] lock him up an' strap him down and put him in a cage." (97) At this point, we can conclude that Slim decides a win-win solution in a tight situation. He assumes if kill Lennie is the best way to solve the problem than “strap him down and put him in a cage” (97). Moreover, he is an intelligent person because he thinks what will happen if he does not kill Lennie, and what will happen if he kills Lennie. As a conclusion, Slim is a wise and smart person, experienced worker, “prince of the ranch” (33). Additionally, people in the ranch always respect and admire him because of his good
A man getting shot by his best friend. A person would think what a horrible thing to do, right? Steinbeck manages to make you feel the other way around he makes you feel like he did the right the right thing. Steinbeck did this by using characterization of George. Also he uses characterization of George and foreshadowing. Also he uses characterization of Slim to make you feel it was the right thing to do.
Of Mice and Men is a novel set on a ranch in the Salinas Valley in California during the Great Depression of the 1930s. The title of the book is a reference to Robert Burns's poem To a Mouse. (1759 - 96):
In the novella, ‘Of Mice and Men’, the characters of Slim and Curley are created to have a strong influence on the other workers’ lives. While both the characters make an impact with the way they are presented, Steinbeck portrays them both very differently. He does this by giving the reader different impressions when each of the characters are introduced, the idiosyncrasies the author has given them, the way they treat others, how the rest of the characters react to the characteristics of Curley and Slim and why they influence particular characters.
Of Mice And Men The novel ‘Of Mice and Men’ reveal life in the 1930’s. A time very diverse to ours. Steinback, the author of this novel wrote about various issues such as lifestyle of the travelling ranchmen, loneliness, friendship, the American dream, racism and sexism. The book is about two migrant labourers, George Milton and Lennie Small in California.
The story Of Mice and Men took place during the 1930’s. That time period was very different from today. Race and gender were very important characteristics that determined whether a person had the opportunity to make money. The 1930’s were also a time where people started questioning life and the American culture. Many people like John Steinbeck thought that life was very unfair and questioned whether if life was even worth living. In Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck demonstrates that mans dream is destined to be destroyed by a cruel reality.
Of Mice and Men was written during a period of racism. In the 1960's it was important for everyone to get along with eachother because not everyone was equal. George and Lennie showed a great part in friendship throught the whole book. At the ranch in Selinas mostly everyone showed friendship in some way. Friendship was a great factor when the book was published because of all the racism going on at the time.
For these reasons, I think Slim has the most power in the novel because he has manipulating skills which can alter a person’s decision for his advantage. He has social skills and a communication with others. And lastly, the ability to concur the only woman at the ranch with his charming face. With his manipulating skills, he guided Curley’s thoughts and managed to get him focused on his reputation and not who caused his injury. With that skill, he helped George and Lennie to have a good reputation in front of the other men and the Boss. Also, so many people at the ranch respect Slim, that all listen when he talks. Nobody has the reason to talk back at him, even Curley. Even after knowing that his wife has something going on with Slim, he
