In 1975, due to the war that was happening in Angola, they had to come back to Cabo Verde so they could save their lives and the three kids that they already had. After they went to Cabo Verde my grandmother had 2 more kids, in which one of them is my mother.

To be honest, my Father’s side’s records are a bit hazy (my last name has no ethnic origin). My Mother’s side is a different situation.

Slavery had an immense impact on African American families, as the familial dynamic of the African American family was in many ways responsible for the stereotypes surrounding black families in the present moment. Not only were families the sole property of their slave owner, but there were laws restricting their rights and privileges. However, despite the fact that the African American slave family existed in a perpetually tumultuous state, there were cohesive slave families, but they faced many struggles and challenges. In particular, black women were faced with incredible hardships with regard to sustaining the familial structure. This paper explores aspects of the African American family structure during slavery, considering the effect that slavery had on black women. The legacy of slavery in the present moment is also considered, in addition to whether slavery continues to exist.

The “Public Sale of Negroes, by Richard Clagett, depicts a typical auction in 1883. Although, it is important to note that “typical” in the 1800’s is very far from the typical of today. What is interesting or peculiar about this auction and many others in this time is that they were auctioning and selling people. The “Institution of Slavery” or chattel slavery, or even simply slavery, was the mistreatment of people as personal property and objects, where they were bought and sold and forced to perform work and labor. A very little to almost none is known about my family history because of the backwardness of the eastern culture as opposed to that of the west. Our forefathers are said to have been nomads all their lives searching pasturelands for their cattle and cultivating land for the subsistence farming. Slavery greatly affected families during the Civil War. The decisions were beyond the control of those who it affected. Some families were affected greatly while others not so much. The families were separated by auctioning or being sold to a different owner. It was a horrible time for the slave families, they didn't know what would happen next.

African Americans played an important role in the Revolutionary War. The slaves fought against their race and more. At this time slaves had no human rights, because of that, some ran away. Enslaved people could not legally marry in any American Colony or State. Slaves had to fight for their lives and rights. Some colonial states like Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut still considered African Americans as property at this time.( National Humanities Center.org). Another affect the slaves faced was being separated from their families.

During the mid-1800s, it was challenging being a slave. Belonging to another human being instead of being free brought numerous hardships African Americans had to endure. It brought about unimaginable pain, frustration, disruption, and stress. In America, slavery was glorified, even though, families were separated and destroyed. Slavery made it tedious to have stability in families because of the effects it had on the African American people. After reading “How Affected African American Families” and “Narrative of Jenny Proctor,” slavery caused African American families to cope with separation, unfair marriage stipulations, horrible living condition, mistreatment and labor, and also the ending of slavery.

She followed her parents when they moved because my grandfather was in the army and had been transferred to Guiana. She went through tough moments in her life; her dad was wicked, cold and often away. During the time my mother was a teenager, women were not treated equally as men, most of the time they would stay home, bring the children to school and prepare dinner while the husband would go to work in order to earn money and make live his family. My grandfather was an alcoholic; therefore, he had unacceptable behavior toward his family. My grandmother could not leave with her children because her husband was the only one working and bringing food on the table.

To begin with genealogy is really hard work you have to find stuff that goes way back. Sometimes someone in your family keeps all that info to names of family members that live a long time ago.
