Skeeter's Relationship In The Help

Decent Essays

In The Help by Kathryn Stockett, intricate and interesting mother-child relationships exist in a typical white household. Unlike today where motherly bonds are renowned to be the most loyal and powerful friendships one can ever achieve/obtain, mother-child relationships in The Help are like unsteady and flimsy houses of cards so breakable, a small breath can easily destroy them. Filled with extreme irony, in this story white women become mothers to children only to hire a maid to raise them and often times even neglect/maltreat their own kids. As a result, the Help house maids turn into the real caretakers and develop strong close bonds with their employers’ children. These kinds of scenarios are seen in the homes of Charlotte Phelan, Miss …show more content…

Often times, Eugenia/Skeeter’s birth mother, Charlotte Phelan, concentrates on physical appearances, criticizing Skeeter of her flaws and constantly nagging her to stop “chewing gum in the house” (74) or “march upstairs and brush your [her] hair down” (74). In contrast, Constantine focuses not on the physical but personality aspect/component of Skeeter. She accepts Skeeter’s appearance, and even praises her insecurities/weaknesses/blemishes/flaws. However, whenever Skeeter experiences events that make her emotionally insecure about her physical appearance, like a brush, Constantine combs out these hard tangles in Skeeter’s life. For instance, Constantine comforts Skeeter after Carlton’s friend tells her she is ugly, teaching her that “Ugly live on the inside. Ugly be a hurtful, mean person” (73, both in movie and book) ( ). Through several of Constantine's inspirational lessons, Skeeter also learns that Constantine is the pocket she can tuck her devilish secrets for safekeeping. From little embarrassing secrets like not getting “asked to dance” by a boy (in the movie) and dangerous smoking habits, Constantine keeps Skeeter's secrets tightly to herself. (Wisely said by Constantine in the Help movie 2011, “Some things we just got to keep to ourselves”.) Through these events of Skeeter’s childhood, revealed is how Constantine is like an …show more content…

As described in the movie/film, Elizabeth Leefolt does not believe her “child is pretty” (Taylor, The Help), and instead of using her time to take care her of her child, she “dress[es] up nice every day. Always got her make-up on” (5). The selfish Miss Leefolt also busies herself on the sewing machine and her friends, ignoring Mae Mobley’s cries and “rolling her eyes like it’s [Mae Mobley’s] a stray cat stuck in the screen door” (5). While Mae Mobley is only “pick[ed] Baby Girl up but once a day” (movie) and constantly smacked by her biological mother, Aibileen is her medicine, curing the painful cuts of negligence with love and nurturing support. By teaching Mae Mobley how to use the toilet and tending to her hygiene and hunger problems, Aibileen additionally deeply cares for and satisfies the child’s needs, like a true mother. With the recurring line/quote in the movie (but different versions of this quote is in the book... do i mention this?), “You is kind. You is smart. You is important” ( ), Mae Mobley also sincerely feels the warmth of Aibileen’s genuine love and support through these words. As a result, Mae Mobley considers the sympathetic and caring Aibileen as her “real mama” (336 and in the movie) instead of her egocentric
