Single Sex Education Should Be Enforced Throughout The United States

Imagine that you were in a classroom full of your gender how would you feel? Well, if you feel that you're not ok with that well, In school year 2004-05 122 public schools offered single sex classes and 34 public schools were single sex classes mandatory according to “Old Tactic Gets New Use: Public Schools Separate Boys and Girls.” Article. Close to 70% of kids in single sex classes raised their math and reading scores in “Old Tactic Gets New Use: Public Schools Separate Boys and Girls.” Article. Although this may seem bad and shouldn't happen it's really not. Kids in single sex classes will have more of a chance to succeed than students in non single sex class because of most kids have no problem with this in their school, less discipline, and most of all higher grades.

This can be achieved by attending public schools, private schools, or by doing homeschooling. The most popular school system is the public system where children from both genders attend. According to Christina Hoff Sommers in her article, “The Boys at the Back”, published on the internet February 2, 2013, we are seeing girls in these institutions outperforming boys at an increasing rate.

It is true, but single sex schools are failing due to the fact that more people choose to go to a co-ed school. Gender gap can be related to differences in the personalities of the students, the academic environment and the society’s views. Brooks makes it seem like males are a victim of gender discrimination in schools and that nowadays less males go into career fields that has more reading to do but it is not true. It is the student’s personal preferences and work ethics that lead to their success in life. Since more females are getting higher education and achieving degrees, more females are in the work force, therefore the rate of males hired in a certain career field goes down while the female rate goes up. It is important to get the point across because more people would believe the facts that are partially true and then conclude with an inaccurate statement. Based on the situation in Mr. James 5th grade class, should more American elementary school students be taught in single-sex classrooms? Single-sex classrooms are not the reason for academic success and will not be a good educational decision for our future generations, therefore, public schools should not establish single-sex classrooms. Even though some people say single-sex classrooms is a smart decision for education, it can cause extreme sexism and is not the true reason for academic success.

Until the 20th century, education in the United States was gender-specific. Coeducation progressively came into the American educational landscape in the late 1800s, and since that time, same-sex education primarily has been confined to exclusive and denominational schools. Beginning in 2002, after the No Child Left Behind Act was passed, single-sex education has been growing in popularity. According to the National Association for Single Sex Public Education, the United States has over 95 single-sex public schools and more than 445 public coed schools offer single-sex classrooms (Novotney, Amy). With the popularity on the rise, many questions have been asked as to whether this divide in the classroom is academically ailing to a child’s learning or if it is not. By examining the successes of single-sex classrooms, school districts and parent’s can more fully understand that single-sex classes can implement changes to enhance students learning abilities.

A time comes in every young teen 's life when he or she must decide where to attend high school. As they examine which high school they want to go to, one of the factors they may come across is whether to go to a single-sex school or a co-educational school. Gender separation can make a huge change for kids in school. Student’s classrooms should be separated by gender because it causes less distractions, classrooms will be easier to teach, and the classes will be smaller.

The current public education system claims to have the student’s best interest as a top priority, but in reality, it is actually harming the students. Almost all are short-changed the way education is set up now. Boys and girls learn in different ways. They are not different merely because of how they are treated in society, but because of how their brains function. However, when teachers try to teach different genders at the same time, the majority of the time, it just will not work. Badly needed are teachers that understand the differences between, and how to teach, boys and girls. Coed schools hurt more than they help, not allowing children to reach their potential. Single-sex schooling is more beneficial to the student’s learning.

In today’s society, education has become a very important factor in a student 's life. Everyone tries to do and implement whatever is best for the student to learn and become successful. Therefore, as a result, society tries to separate schools based on gender. Schools should be separated by gender for many reasons. The first reason is that gender separation will help eliminate bullying. It has been demonstrated that boys, in general, tend to be more rude and violent than girls causing the boys to “bully” girls. Another reason they should be separated is to help break down stereotypes. An example of this is that girls are free of the pressure to compete with boys in male dominated subjects such as math and science. Another reason they should be separated is that it makes it easier on the teacher to use different learning techniques that are geared toward specific genders. It is a great idea to separate students by gender at schools if they want the students to have a better education. This will help prevent bullying at schools, help breakdown stereotypes, and encourage teachers to use different educational techniques.

A few years ago, separate classes for male and female students were common, but have decreased today. However, some parents are still worried about students’ attention during the class at coed schools. This thought maybe not correct. Because students at coed schools can learn ways to understand and to build friendships with members of other genders, coed school curriculum is more effective for their future lives. Staying in the same classroom, boys and girls have better educational and personal experiences.
