Do you believe that single-gender elementary classrooms are better for children’s education rather than traditional coeducational classrooms, or vice versa? There are many differences in boy brains and girl brains and according to these differences; it may be potential to have different learning techniques and environments. Some schools are adopting the newer curriculum of single gender classrooms to help children achieve a better educational learning environment that suits both boys and girls separately. Although it is not fully understood if it is a better education choice, a lot of studies show that single gender classrooms can be useful to help improve achievement. However, other experts may think otherwise because they do not believe that there is any significant evidence that prove it is necessary to separate genders since every single person is different or that it may even deny equal opportunities. A comparison of the single-gender classrooms versus traditional classrooms both shows the belief for higher education, but I believe single gender classrooms offer a positive alternative to the traditional mixed classrooms.

A higher percentage of girls lowers the amount of classroom disruption and fosters a better relationship between pupils and their teacher, a study of the data suggests. Teachers are less tired in classrooms with more girls, and pupils overall seem to be more satisfied when a high female-to-male ratio persists. Advocates state that students can achieve greater academic success once taught separately, especially girls. According to Leonard Sax, psychologist and founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Single-Sex Public Education, “Single-sex education works better. Kids who attend single-sex schools not only do better academically but also have a better attitude toward school and a better outlook on life.” He also argues that placing them in separate classrooms wouldn’t accomplish as much as separate schools, (NASSE). Sax believes that boys learn differently than girls and take more time to develop. He uses research about brain maturation, hearing, vision and temperature sensitivity to support his claim, and argues that boys typically receive more attention from teachers and have less chances of harassment, and at often times very distracting. He points out, “What we’re doing right now — pretending that gender doesn’t matter — is not working,” he says. “We are losing ground.”
But they couldn’t be more wrong. Victoria M. Indivero of Penn State News’s ‘Sex segregation in schools, detrimental to equality’ say,”Neuroscientist have found a few difference between male and female brains, but none have been linked to different learning styles.” And to further back up this claim, I have Gina Rippon of Neuroscience News’s ‘Are Female and Male brains really different.’Which states,”It can be shown that a ‘characteristically male’ density of dendritic spines or branches of a neuro cell can be changed to the ‘female’ form simply by the application of a mild external stress. Biological sex alone cannot explain brain differences; to do so requires an understanding of how, when, and to what extent external events affect the struggle of the brain.” So as you can see the gender of the host does not determine nor change any aspect on the brain. It all has to do with the uniqueness of the brain and what happens outside it to the rest of the body that determines exactly what is need for living and learning. For example, if someone had been in a traumatizing car accident, but he was a young boy, it would be best not to stick him into a classroom that is littered with pictures and pictures of cars because they are seen as ‘boyish’. It is no secret that, in general, boys and girls differ in their learning styles. Capitalizing on these differences could advance classroom performance. With on-going concerns about student success in school, any changes in the classroom that could increase student achievement should be considered. Recognizing the learning differences between boys and girls, one of the changes that could be instituted is single-gender classrooms.
In more recent years, our educational system has faced challenges that are leading our country back into segregation. After observing a school in Florida, the faculty learned that separating the boys and girls improved test scores immensely, and the scores are continuing to improve. Over 80% of students are now passing the tests now that they are learning in classrooms with their own gender. The improvement in test scores and the learning environments will benefit the students and help them succeed more in taking their tests.

Then one day Maria look up the differences between Co-ed schools and Single-gender schools. Maria found that children who go to Single-Gender schools learn and get better grades than children who go to Co-ed schools. There are many differences between Single-Sex schools and Co-ed schools. Co-ed schools are the mixing of boys and girls. But, Single-Sex schools are the separation of boys and girls. Some advocates or educators thinks Single-Sex schools are better than Co-ed schools and others do not. The separation of girls and boys can lead to better grades, less distractions and more focus in class.
