“… Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” This verse is found in John 8:7; in this, Jesus is basically saying how no one can judge anyone because no one is perfect. No one can say anything about anybody’s sin because all sin is equal and everybody sins. In the Scarlet Letter, the Puritans did not think all sin was identical; they saw some sin as worse than others. The Puritans did not follow Jesus’ advice with Hester; today, we still don’t follow it any better.

Three of the symbols that Hawthorne used would be Pearl, black weeds, and Chillingworth. Hawthorne's definition of sin is what seems wrong is wrong, this is proved through Pearl, the black weeds, and Chillingworth which are some of many symbols of Hawthorne's throughout The Scarlet Letter. “How strange, indeed! Man had marked this woman’s sin by a scarlet letter, which had such potent and disastrous efficacy that no human sympathy could reach her, save it were sinful like herself.
"In freedom most people find sin.” This John Green quote is true for every symbol of sin in The Scarlet Letter. Hester Prynn has freedom when her husband leaves; while he is gone she has an affair with Author Dimmesdale. Hester becomes pregnant and the townspeople force her to wear a scarlet ‘A’. Throughout The Scarlet Letter Nathanial Hawthorn deals with sin through symbolism.
The scarlet letter is a cloth in the form of the letter “A,” which represents that Hester Prynne has committed adultery which is a sin for puritans. When Hester was younger she was married to Roger Chillingsworth and was sent to America. Meanwhile, being a young woman alone in America, she was involved in an affair with Arthur Dimmesdale, and because of this affair she gave birth to a daughter named Pearl. The antagonist of the novel was Roger Chillingsworth because he did not want the humiliation of being with a disloyal and fake wife. Hester's husband left her staying alone for a really long time.

“Throughout the Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the effects of sin on the mind, body, and soul of Hester”(Smith). As Hester commits these sins she thinks that what she did was not a very big deal, but when society finds out she gets put in prison and gets in very big trouble. Hester was fighting her own identity by her trying to keep the Puritan society from finding out about that sins that she had committed but once her religion find out they view her in a whole different way. The Puritan religion viewed her as a very sinful person, and they also viewed her as a promiscuous person. In the novel The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the letter “A” changes from adultery, to ability, to angel, and to the living persona of Pearl.
Instead of seeing Hester as an individual, the people judge and identify her solely by her scarlet letter, which proclaims her mistakes. She is viewed as an example of what those who are youthful and innocent should avoid being, since she is “‘a living sermon against sin, until the ignominious letter [is] engraved upon her tombstone’” (54). Hester, along with her scarlet token, will perpetually be seen as the embodiment of sin, which has a cruel toll on her. Some of the townspeople think her punishment is not severe enough, but “the pang of it will be always in her heart” (45). Despite seeming confident, Hester does struggle with feelings of guilt and shame at times as she tries to decide if her actions were right or wrong.

Therefore, committing a sin is seen as also committing a crime and breaking the deeply entrenched social norms. However, through Hester Hawthorne conveys that a sin, like adultery, is not always detrimental. Sins can be beneficial, not deleterious, when they aid in the individual’s growth and strength. Furthermore, the effects of sinning, while detrimental, can have unintended positive effects.

In addition to emphasizing the impacts of human nature through sex and sexuality, Williams also writes about the importance of human relationships within his plays to convey the value of human connections in the sense of family and romance. His bond with his sister Rose was one of the most important to him, as he wrote one of his first famous plays, The Glass Menagerie, about her (Barnett). He was very close with both her and his mother, and Rose’s early lobotomy and schizophrenia were the source of his distress as he watched someone he loved deteriorate so quickly (Morton).
