The Crucible is one of the most notable classics in American literature. Written by Arthur Miller, the story takes place during 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts. It’s a story about witch hysteria that caused the trials and executions of many innocent people. Furthermore, it’s filled with many intriguing characters, symbolism, and themes that keep the book on the shelves of American high schools everywhere. Similarly, the Second Second Red Scare in the United States during the 1950s was also time of hysteria and fear of communism. Intriguingly, to consider that Arthur Miller lived during most of the twentieth century, there must be a correlation between The Crucible and the Second Second Red Scare. For example, The Crucible takes place in a theocratic society, in which the church rules society. In Salem, moral laws and state laws are the same. The plot in Acts II-IV in The Crucible involves the arrests and trials of people accused in practicing witchcraft, Clearly the practice of witchcraft is a clear intolerance in Salem, Massachusetts. Furthermore, the entrance of Reverend Hale towards the end of Act I shows the seriousness of the practice of witchcraft. What began as a group of girls playing around in the woods at night escalated to the accusation of witchcraft practices in the village. Whatever offense against the bible is a intolerance to the state is clearly exemplified in plot The Crucible. In Act III, Judge Danforth comments “a person is either with this court or he must be counted against it.” The church in Salem is supposedly right all the time and it’s a clear intolerance if people fight for it as many people paid for their lives in the story. An example is Giles Corey who was pressed to death for failing to reveal names of innocent people accused of witchcraft. Similarly, the Second Red Scare shares a common Intolerance of communism instead of Witchcraft. For example, in the last scene of Act I in The Crucible, the group of girls who were supposedly possessed named off innocent people accused of Witchcraft as a scapegoat. This advanced the plot as the situation in the story escalates as more innocent characters in the story get arrested for witchcraft such as a well respected Rebecca Nurse, Giles Corey, and Elizabeth Proctor. These characters are innocent because of the way the story depicts these characters in the situation. For example, Act I revealed that Rebecca Nurse is a well respected known person for her charity work. These characters serves as scapegoats for the group of girls caught in the woods at night doing rituals in Act I. Similarly, in the Second Red Scare, communist hysteria and fear lead to the arrest of many innocents for expressing their political beliefs. This was especially true during Senator McCarthy’s investigations of thousands of Americans. McCarthy accused many politicians, public figureheads, and celebrities of being communist for opposing his view while also virtually ruining their reputations. In 1951, the Ohio Un-American Activities Committee investigated and questioned thousands of Ohioans if they have ties to communism.
