Many are familiar with Anne Frank's diary and have even sat down and watched the movie The Diary of Anne Frank. With her diary we learn a lot about Anne and her family, as well as the tragic story of their life, and the lives of many other Jews. However, this is not the only movie that gives us an insight in the life of a young girl during World War II. The Book Thief is in many ways similar to The Diary of Anne Frank in which the viewer is provided the experiences of the war between two very different young girls that have to adapt to a new home and possess an increasing hunger for knowledge. While in The Diary of Anne Frank, Anne is a Jewish girl, raised in a Jewish family. Her life is the perfect life of a young thirteen-year-old, she has a loving family, many friends, and even a boy that likes her. However, all of this was taken away when the raiding for Jews started to increase in Germany. Her family is forced to go into hiding in the attic at her dad's business building. Although both movies are based on the lives of two young girls, we are shown two very diverse point of views of the war. Anne and Liesel both had to adapt to a new home and living with new people. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak takes place in Nazi Germany between 1939 through 1944. This book is about a little girl named Liesel Meminger. Her mother and her brother Werner are traveling on a train traveling to a town named Molching. On the way to Molching her brother dies. At his burial, Liesel steals her first book and this leads to her understanding the importance of knowing how to read. Throughout this book, Zusak uses a chaotic setting, developers interesting characters, creates an intriguing plot conflict, symbols and themes.

Set in the midst of World War II Molching, Germany, Death itself narrates the novel, focusing in on a young German girl named Liesel, who lives with her foster parents on Himmel Street, which is a very ironic name for considering what is always happening on that street. The Book Thief helps explain how to get through the pain of losing a loved one by explaining it with a little girl, who has lost so much and yet continues to go on, albeit she struggles at points, but who doesn’t struggle in their life? Through Death’s eyes, we see how Death views everything, being drastically different from our point of view.
