The two novels Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, and A Separate Peace, written by John Knowles, are two books that contain many similarities to each other. Of Mice and Men follows two very close friends, named George and Lennie, that are looking for work in California during the Great Depression and struggle to make money. In A Separate Peace, Gene and Finny are also close friends but their relationship changes greatly throughout the book. The two novels, Of Mice and Men and A Separate Peace, both have themes of friendship. In Of Mice and Men George and Lennie are almost like brothers as they travel and do everything together. It was rare to have such a close friend like they had with each other and they knew that. They both knew that they had to stay with each other or else they would have a very tough time. This is because George and Lennie have opposite characteristics. George is smart and small while Lennie is big, strong, yet dumb. This could be surprising to one because they are so different but so friendly to one another even though they have so many differences. In the beginning of the novel, George and Lennie had a disagreement and when Lennie threatened to leave his partner, George said, “No-- look! I was jus’ foolin’, Lennie. ‘Cause I want you to stay with me” (Steinbeck 13). This shows that George knows that he needs Lennie because Lennie is very strong which can get them a lot of work on farms so that they can make money. Lennie had a dream where a
The novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles and the movie Dead Poet’s Society both present an abundant array of similarities. There are examples of alike characters, events, themes, and symbols; some specific examples of resemblances are Phineas and Neil, Gene and Todd, and Mr. Hadley (Brinker’s father) and Mr. Perry (Neil’s father).
George and Lennie have a strong bond of friendship that makes them both feel like they are actually somebody. For example, “ ‘I been mean ain’t I?’ ‘If you don’t want me I can go off in the hills an’ find a cave. I can go away any time.’ ‘No—look! I was jus’ foolin, Lennie, cause I want you to stay with me.’” (p.14) This shows that George actually wants Lennie to be thought of as one of his friends, not as a doll that he can just kick around. The quote also shows that George cares for Lennie tremendously and really understands how Lennie feels. Secondly, Lennie feels the same way back at George “But not us! An’ why? Because…. Because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why.” (p.15). This is a good example
Lennie is a large slow and a bit childish due to his mental disability. George is small, rough, bright but short tempered man that travels and cares for lennie. On page 14 George was talking to Lennie about how guys like them are lonely, they have no family or place to go. Unlike themselves they have a future and theycare for eachother. Then lennie says happily “But not us! Ah’ why? Because.. Because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you and that's why” this shows that George and lennie have each other's back and they're basically each other's family and if they ever got lost or separated, they had a specific spot to go find each other so they wouldn't have to worry where they would be.
And they want to get a house and have a job. In this book George acts like he does not like the way Lennie acts but he does still care about Lennie because in the book Lennie had a dead mouse in his pocket and he was holding it but George told Lennie that do not keep it and throw it away because George knew that if he had a dead mouse it will be bad because it might had a disease. For example this is when George addresses no matter what situation that they are in they will always have each other backs and talks about it in this quote. "But not us! An' why? Because... because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's why." This quote tells us that they really care about each other and George is responsible for Lennie since Lennie forgets everything but unlike people forgetting about their friends George takes care of Lennie and makes sure that Lennie is safe.In conclusion, George and Lennie are true friends and they will care about each other since they have a future together and they have strong bond that is always there for each other and never
George took Lennie in after Lennie’s aunt died. George knew his aunt pretty well. Lennie had nowhere to go afterwards, so George let Lennie come along with him. George wasn’t always nice to Lennie in the beginning. George would tease him and trick him. Lennie didn’t know any better than to listen to George, even if it was a taunt. After an incident happened to Lennie, George stopped tormenting him. He felt bad for Lennie and how he treated him. From this moment on, George actually took into consideration of Lennie’s mindset. In the book, Steinbeck writes,
Throughout the novels, Of Mice and Men and A Separate Peace, there are plenty of similarities shown from the contrasting themes to the character’s growing personality. In each story, is a set of friends that do everything together and go everywhere together. It is their common hopes and dreams that encourage them to succeed and hopefully achieve what they wish. The characters’ friendships are seem almost inseparable; however, they face many hardships because of physical and mental differences shown within. The predominant themes echoed in the novels, Of Mice and Men and A Separate Piece, are the hopes of achieving the American dream and the values and struggles of friendship.
In Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie have a friendship that is shown through the decisions that they make. If George and Lennie did not
The problem with Lennie was that he was mentally disabled, back in the 1930's people did not understand things like that, and had no clue about disabled people. Lennie was sweet and loved thing that were soft. Lennie would put himself in very dangerous situations and with disability he lacked the capacity to control himself physically. Lennie did not understand how strong he was and they damage he would do until after the fact. He also shares the dream of having the small farm and tending to his small rabbit hutch. Since Lennie is mentally disabled he depends on George for almost everything. Lennie is like a small child that has to a have a parent nearby always or he will get into
In conclusion, I believe that overall in the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck ,George was not a good friend to Lennie. George did take care of Lennie but,in my point of view, not because he actually cared for Lennie.George never once mentions how he cares for Lennie or how much he loves his companionship but does mention how easy life would be without him and if if they were related he would kill himself .Yes George looked over him and stuck by him but in most cases Lennie would have been better of being with someone
A good friendship is needed to survive through tough times. Lennie respects George because George gives him comfort. George cares for Lennie so much that he considers him to be part of his family: “George said, he’s my cousin. I told his old lady id take care of him. He got kicked in the head by a horse when he was a kid” (Steinbeck 22). Aside from comfort and advice, Lennie also needs George because when he gets in trouble, George always manages to find a way to help him get out of it. When Lennie had got in trouble in Weed, George stays by his side and gives him advice that helps remain safe and calm. George has many opportunities to leave Lennie and change his lifestyle, but he needs Lennie just as much in order to help him through his own hardships. Lennie looks
In the novel, “Of Mice and Men”, by John Steinbeck, the main focus is on George and Lennie. These two gentlemen have a bond like no other. George is skinny, short, and a little older, but Lennie is tall, big, and a little younger than George. These two workmen travel together, because Lennie’s aunt asked george to take care of him. Lennie’s Aunt Clara asked George to take him, because Lennie is mentally challenged, and forgetful. At times George would get so mad at Lennie, for making them have to go from ranch to ranch. During their gallivant to different ranches, Lennie was unaware of his own strength. Although, they meet others along the way. Thus, Lennie and George were left with each other on their journey, though it was not always pleasant.
In the story, Of Mice and Men, friendship plays a major role in the way the story is told. George and Lennie is just a little part of the story. The reason George and Lennie are the main reason for this is because, George and Lennie take care of each other like no one else does. George and Lennie’s friendship is there because Lennie can’t take care of himself so George wanted to help Lennie do better in life. Another reason is that all the characters in “Of Mice and Men” is that they never had another person on their side through their life.
George’s isolation is also illustrated in Steinbeck’s Mice and Men. George expresses many hard feelings towards Lennie at the opening of this story. “‘...you’re a lot of trouble,’ said George. ‘I could get along so easy and so nice if I didn’t have you on my tail. I could live so easy and maybe have a girl.’” (pg.7). For as much as George says he doesn’t like to have Lennie by his side every second of the day, something keeps him from completely abandoning him. At one point, Lennie realizes how much George wants him to leave, and he almost goes off by himself to find a cave so he doesn’t have to cause George so much grief and sorrow. “‘No-look! I was jus’ foolin’, Lennie. ‘Cause I want you to stay with me...” (pg.12-13). George
A quote in the book that demonstrates this is when they were walking over to the ranch and Lennie shouted, “But not us! An’ why? Because… Because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why.” (14). George had always looked out for both of them. “ Well, I never seen one guy take so much trouble for another guy.” (22). This quote was stated by their boss when George and Lennie arrived at work. The boss was confused why George was talking for Lennie. He thought George was trying to take his money, but really George was just trying to get both of them a job. This passage shows what George will go through to help his friend Lennie and other people see that too. Also, Slim, another character in the novel, saw Lennie and George traveling together, “Ain’t many guys travel around together. ‘He mused. ‘I don’t know why. Maybe ever’body in the whole damn world is scared of each other.” (35). This shows that Lennie and George's friendship is rare amongst most people, and when seen, is
Lennie is the most sympathetic character in Of Mice and Men because he’s not very bright when it comes to things and happens to forget a lot. As George and Lennie are walking to go to a new ranch George asked Lennie
