Similarities Between 'Night And The Breakaway'

Elie Wiesel, the author of Night, and Karen Hesse the author of Debts display many similarities throughout their work. Each author’s use of imagery and the tones they convey allow the reader to understand how each character gets over their conflicts with optimism. In the novel Night by Elie Wiesel and the short story “The Breakaway,” by an unknown author the two author’s use of imagery is similar because they both show how the characters overcome their conflicts with hope. An example of this similarity in Night is when the author states that “We breathed in air filled with fire and smoke, and our eyes shone with hope.”. The imagery shows that they had hope in their eyes, which helps create emotion that the reader feels about the character. An example of this in the short story is when the author said “By the time he got to senior year in high school, his GPA was hovering in the slam dunk position”. An example of this difference in Night is when the author said that “One more stab to the heart, one more reason to hate. One less reason to live”. This tone conveys a “throw in the towel” attitude toward his experience during the Holocaust because he is stating that the more things that hurt him, the more things give him less hope to live. An example of perseverance in the short story is when the author states that “ So, while she was home on break, they studied together, and they talked, and they worked, and Justin felt better than he ever had before”.
