Being a small child he was obsessed with the idea of servicing God and his Word. He always tried to influence his peers, trying to show them the saintly and the proper path of truth. This time was the time of formation of his leadership spirit. Despite the fact that no one listened to him, he did not give up; it may seem strange, but he was weekly preaching four dogs at a local chapel. He has no support in his family, therefore he found it at one of the village residents; she believed in him with all her heart, supporting his pure effort. Once he asked her: “Can I be like a Mr. Kennedy when I grow up?” These words are the best reflection of his huge desire and eagerness for leadership and recognition.
The years passed and Jim Jones still remains
One of Lewis’ earliest turning points in his life was when his uncle gave him his first bible. Lewis recalls, “Growing up, what I really wanted to be was a preacher. An uncle gave me a bible for Christmas when I was four. (Lewis 26) Even before he received the bible, Lewis had strong religious views and the bible gave him that extra encouragement. Lewis said, “So I preached to my chickens about every night.” (Lewis 27) This showed Lewis’ dedication to his bible and even though the chickens couldn’t quite understand, it was a beginning for him. He stated, “I imagined they (chickens) were my congregation, and me—I was a preacher.” (Lewis 28) Even as a child, Lewis imagined him preaching to a larger crowd beyond the rural chicken farm of Alabama. The bible directed him toward his religious path, and eventually the teachings on nonviolence.
On the turn of the 5th decade of the 20th century, America was ready for a change. The change they made was to elect John Fitzgerald Kennedy as president of the United States and V.P. Lyndon Baines Johnson. LBJ and JFK were elected as president, with similarities between the two, as well a common vision for America. However, they came from vastly different backgrounds during their lifetime, which affected how they ran the country as they were the president.
Jim Jones and Jesus Christ, two names of two very known people, they share many similarities. Yet only own of them is praised and the other is demonized. Even comparing the two is almost forbidden, how could someone compare the savior of mankind and a man who is responsible for the death of hundreds? Both managed to gain a large following, had people who feared them, and they both made the ultimate sacrifice. While they share many similarities they both are remembered very differently. Jesus is known as the savior of all and he is celebrated furiously, while Jim Jones is demonized and only remembered for his cyanide kool-aid. They both went about their lives in different ways, while Jesus was a peacemaker who helped others and sacrificed himself
Because of his beliefs, he wanted to do what was best and helped people whenever he had the chance. His speaking and teachings opened up the eyes of many, and that is why he was one of the best leaders in the novel. Without his strength and morals, none of that would be possible.
Martin Luther King Jr. and John Robert Lewis were civil right leaders/civil rights activists around the ‘80’s, which is what everyone knows them as. However, some people didn’t know they both justified breaking the law. Martin Luther King Jr. was not only a powerful preacher, but as well an exceptional reader, as is proved in his 1963 Letter from Birmingham Jail. Of Dr. King’s argument, the central point in his letter states that there is a law higher than mankind’s law. It also states that any human law which is at odds with this much higher law is unjust. Every human being is bound to obey as what Dr. King describes as the “higher law”, which is why our laws must be in harmony with this “higher law”. However for some reason, we as mankind
Differences are the key to the Development of the U.S.A. Quindlen wrote “Quilt of a Country” and John F. Kennedy wrote “The Immigrant Contribution”. Both Authors agree that America was built in nobodies image, but in different styles. Quindlen thinks more about the wars, John.F. Kennedy thinks more about immigrants and Cultures. Although they wrote in very different styles they also had similar ideas about America. Quindlen believes this is a mongrel nation and John F. Kennedy believes that the nation was built by immigrants coming to the nation and becoming entrepreneurs that help our nation become what it is today.
He freely relinquished his identity as known by his secular achievements. It is true we are often tempted by success, achievement and wealth. Sometimes it is hard fulfilling the role as leader in a church, and one can experience loneliness abstaining from temptations. However, one’s effective leadership is possible
King recounts his transition from youth to youth pastor in a conservative setting with a pharisaic leaning. The real beauty is the ability to use this background and rely on the Spirit, scripture and tradition to inform the remainder of his theology.
Barack Obama and Martin Luther King Jr. are both very influential African American leaders. Both have had an extremely positive impact on America, especially for the African American community. Obama spoke out about the past struggles, struggles of today, and what can be done to resolve these struggles for African American children in particular during his speech at the NAACP Centennial Convention in 2009. In King’s speech “I Have a Dream” given back in 1963, he spoke about the change that we need and how he believes we can get there. Obama and King’s use of repetition, analogies, and ethos determines the impact they are leaving on their audience. Although Obama gave a strong powerful speech, King used those rhetorical devices more effectively to leave an impact on his audience.
The speeches of Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy are both meant to deliver a powerful message. Despite how similar these messages are, there are contrasting ideas that set the speeches apart. The speeches of Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy share similarities in their statements on freedom and the main purposes of the speeches themselves, while differing in historical context.
At this point Rodrigues has gone through major events from the drowning of fellow Christians after his capture by the Japanese to even the realization that he is no different than Kichijiro (175). With this in mind, it proves that when a person’s faith is tested despite being leadership they have a sinful nature and an
Strong leadership is vital to the success of any business, institution, school, team, or even church. Leaders that are considered effective encompass a leadership style and qualities that work to influence and motivate their followers. Joel Osteen, an evangelical pastor from Houston, Texas is truly one of the 21st centuries most captivating leaders. So much so, that he as selected by Barbara Walters as one of her 10 Most Fascinating People of 2016 (ABC News, 2006). His appeal is a phenomenon that is unmatched by any other current leaders in his profession. Over the past 15 years he has built a church, where he ministers one of the largest and most diverse congregations in America (Romano, 2005). Aside from his 45,000 attendees at his weekly services, his sermon is broadcasted in every television market in the United States and in over 100 other nations around the world (“About Joel,” n.d.). Joel Osteen is a prime example of a compelling leader who practices an effective leadership style that resonates with people on a personal level.
Throughout his public life, he embodied for many people an ideal of persistence, tolerance and personal strength. In my opinion, it is the combination of these qualities that made him an outstanding person and a globally recognized leader. Neither persistence without strength, nor strength without tolerance would suffice to turn around the life of
skills, and he demonstrated an ability to influence others in ways that promotes gospel values.
There are many people in scripture that God has placed in leadership roles. Jesus himself, David, Moses, Paul, Peter, Abraham and many others are some of those leaders. There are core attributes discussed in the lecture that personally reflect my opinion of what an effective leader of Christ needs such as, a shared vision, model of the way, empowerment of others, challenge of the process, and encouragement of the heart. Leaders establish a model of the way others should be treated and how goals should be pursued, with standards and examples of what others should follow by exemplifying God’s example. Christian leaders inspire a shared vision to make a difference
