George Washington and John Adams are two of the most influential men that birthed the American Republic. Without hesitation, it is easy to say that if either of these men were not apart of our countries beginning, the nation would be extremely difference or not even existing at all. With that being said, in this paper, I will not only examine the striking similarities between the two, but the night and day differences that still polarize hundreds of years later. To begin, I will speak about the founding father’s lives before they took office. George Washington was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia on February 22, 1732. With that being said, a major error from George Washington while president would have to be his actions during the Battle of Long Island. After signing a surrender document with the French, French offers were to be killed. If it were to go any other way it did and British commanders had stepped up, the Americans would be destroyed and the French could justify a world-wide war (Fleming, 2010). On the other hand, John Adams had kept an old cabinet, led by Alexander Hamilton, instead of installing his own (US Presidents Inside Gov.). Hamilton’s party was not always fond of Adams and if he were to become his own person and take charge in a new cabinet, this kind of hatred could have been repelled. Although these may be seen as nothing but negative, it is a near guarantee that through these mishaps, both George Washington and John Adams had learned from these mistakes. George Washington should be remembered for being a brave, young man who stepped forward for his country in time of need. As the first President of the United States, he set an example of a true American spirit. He is the father of America and even years after his presidency, still sets examples of inspiration to the country. John Adams should be remembered by his moral leadership, compassion, and careful but strong foreign policies that helped the nation’s aim towards peace (A Comparison of America’s First Presidents). In my belief, I do think both George Washington and John Adams were good presidents. Although not perfect, their intentions were to make the United States of America a better country. However, I do think that George Washington, the Father of our Country, was the better of the two. When one takes a glimpse into his life experiences and his character, they would see why.
