French Revolution of 1789 and Russian Revolution of 1917

Despite the fact that French and Russian revolutions occurred over a century apart, both revolutions had two major similarities: poor economy and bad leadership. Poor economic conditions affected most strongly regular people who simply wanted justice and equality. As a result, both revolutions were sparked by the people’s desire to replace their autocracy governments. Although both revolutions had a lot in common, they had differences as well. The French revolution was deeply rooted in the ideals of Enlightenment and involved the overthrow of the monarchy. An increase in prices, a lack of capital, and billions of national debt naturally led to the revolution inevitable. France’s economical climate was greatly influenced by Britain’s control of the commercial market. In addition to adverse economical conditions, France had no central bank, no paper currency, and no means of obtaining more money, as their tax system really taxed the poor. Similar to the Russians, the French people realized that King Louis XVI was harming the country, and the three levels of class systems could not come to terms. Moreover, just like Bolsheviks were fighting with Anti-Bolsheviks, conflict between radical Jacobins and liberal Girondins and the significant Reign of Terror played a key role in leading to and sustaining the revolution.

Even though both revolutions had similar causes, different internal factors eventually led to different results. France obtained their democracy, which replaced their old monarchy, and the Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizens. Their new government consisted of an elected legislative group that met annually and consisted of an elected judiciary and an executive headed by the king.
