“I don’t try to describe the future. I try to prevent it.” This is a quote by Ray Bradbury, an author who wrote many books and stories about the future of society. He often sets his books in a dystopian society. Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, and his short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” both display this dystopian theme in which he thinks will be modern day society. Oddly enough, these stories are set around today’s time which is around the years 2020 to 2050. Bradbury uses imagery, conflict and setting in both Fahrenheit 451 and “There Will Come Soft Rains” to imagine the future where the stories take place, that relate to contemporary life. However, Fahrenheit 451 relates more to contemporary life than “There Will Come Soft Rains”. …show more content…

Internal conflict is the conflict a character experiences within themselves, and external conflict is conflict that has to do with the environment. Both “There Will Come Soft Rains” and Fahrenheit 451 have conflict. In Fahrenheit 451, the main character Montag, experiences internal conflict when he questions his work, his life, and the world around. This is exposed when Montag becomes angry when the women talk carelessly about what is going on in the world.“That’s what the Army said. Quick War. Pete was called yesterday and they said he’d be back next week. Quick…” (Fahrenheit 451) These women do not know the gravity of the situation. Earlier in the story, Montag states that “Ten million men” have been recruited by the army. This is not a quick war. Another thing that makes Montag question the world is there women’s next conversation about children. “I’ve had two children by Caesarean section. No use going through all that agony for a baby.” (Fahrenheit 451) All three women think that children are burdens, and the only reason they are here is to carry out the human population. They serve no purpose to these people, because all these people think of is themselves. These women represent most of the population. These people are materialistic, ignorant, and narcissistic. Since what matters to them is themselves the rest of the world does not matter. Much of today’s population is unaware of the things that …show more content…

The setting effects how the characters interact with the world they live in as well as what decisions they can make in this world. Bradbury’s works are often set in a dystopian setting. In this dystopia, most people live in cities, technology has taken the place of books, and most people are unaware what is going on in the world. This is true for today’s society. About half of the world’s population lives in urban or suburban areas. In Fahrenheit 451, Montag and everyone lives in the city. “Every hour so many damn things in the sky! How in hell did those bombers get up there every single second of our lives! Why doesn't someone want to talk about it! We've started and won two atomic wars since 1990!” (Fahrenheit 451) Also, this novel is set in the distant future or close to today’s society. What also is known is that in the novel, books are banned. They were banned by the people and not the government. In contemporary life today, that idea isn not hard to believe. Often books are replaced by devices that one can read the text off of. There are also new things that replace books such as, gaming consoles, televisions, phones, computers, and gadgets such as drones. This high-tech universe is extreme compared to life in “There Will Come Soft Rains”. In “There Will Come Soft Rains”, the house was situated in a suburban neighborhood. “The sun came out from behind the rain. The house stood alone in a city of rubble and ashes.” (“There
