Both W.E.B Dubois and Alain Locke have different views on the education that African American should receive in order to succeed. The issue rises due to the fact that African American were receiving poor education around the 1930’s. Dubois believed that segregated school was the first step into African Americans receiving adequate education, while Locke believe that segregated school was not to fix the educational crisis for African Americans.

In my own opinion Booker T. Washington gave the best advice. The emphasis of W.E.B. Dubois is on blacks gaining equality with whites. Dubois believed that blacks should be educated and be book smart, in their quest to gaining equality with the whites. On the Contrary, Washington’s philosophy is based on the belief that blacks should get education and develop capabilities so that they can be useful to the society. He believed that blacks will have better standing in the society (and not necessarily equality) if they will put their attention on developing themselves rather than fighting for equality. I believe that W.E.B Dubois beliefs are relevant as of today. In the past black people weren’t accepted in society they were mistreated so badly. White people believe that they didn’t deserve rights just because of their color and that they weren’t educated properly and didn’t belong here. Education has always been valued in the African American community. During slavery freed slaves and those held captive, organized to educate themselves. After emancipation the value of education became even more important to ex-slaves, as it was their emblem of freedom and a means to full participation in American Society (Newby & Tyack, 1971). Racial discrimination, political, social and economic inequality during the late 19th century and early 20th century led various leaders within the black community to rise up and address the appalling circumstances that African Americans were forced to endure. Among these leaders were Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois whom possessed analogous desires as it pertained to the advancement and upliftment of the black race. While both individuals were fighting for the same cause and purpose they embraced contrary ideologies and approaches to African American struggle. In Booker T. Washington’s book “Up from Slavery” African Americans were encouraged to be passive and focus on vocational education whereas in W.E.B. DuBois book “The Souls of Black Folk”, African Americans were encouraged to fight for their merited rights and focus on academic education. However, although Washington was convinced that his ideologies would sincerely uplift the black race, they actually proved to be detrimental, leaving DuBois ideology to be the most reasonable and appropriate solution for the advancement of the black race.

Though there have many reforms in education over the years, racial injustices still exist because no attention in placed on how legislature affects people of color.
