Between the two pieces of writing, “ To My Dear And Loving Husband” and The Crucible, I believe that the love between Bradstreet and her husband to Elizabeth and John Proctor is nothing alike. Firstly, in the poem by Bradstreet, I believe that she would do anything for her husband. For example, in the second stanza, She states “ I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold, or all the riches that East doth hold.” Bradstreet would rather be rich with love then rich with money. Secondly, In The Crucible, while Elizabeth was sick John Proctor did adultery and asked for forgiveness. Specifically, on page (1227), Proctor states “ Spite only keeps me silent. It is hard to give a lie to dogs. I would have your forgiveness, Elizabeth.” In addition,
The poem by Anne Bradstreet and the play by Arthur Miller are both similar ,because they are showing meanings of real love. To begin with, in the poem she tells how much she loves her husband. For example when she says “I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold,or all the riches that the East doth hold”. That statement shows that she wouldn't sell her husband for any amount of money. Secondly, in the story of Arthur Miller it shows what Elizabeth Protector would do to show her love for John Proctor. Specially, when Elizabeth lies for her husband in court so he wouldn't be punished. Furthermore, both of these express what they will do for the love of there spouse. Anne shows that she wouldn't sale her husband for any amount of money ,that's
I believe that the poem “To My Dear and Loving Husband” and the play The Crucible have nothing in common when it comes to the love between the two. For example, “I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold.” Anne Bradstreet says this because the love for her husband is so strong she wouldn't trade it for all the money in the world. “I have confessed it” John Proctor confesses to elizabeth for committing adultery. Bradstreet clearly loves her husband you whether or not Proctor loves Elizabeth is very questionable. “I would have your forgiveness” John Proctor asks for forgiveness from Elizabeth maybe because he loves her, or maybe he feels bad. I wouldn't say he loves her because if he did, do you think he would cheat on her? He clearly
In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible preserving one’s reputation is a major theme. The play takes place in Salem, Massachusetts, revolving around witch trials in 1693. In the play there are two men, John Proctor and Giles Corey, whom of which both try to protect their good name and reputation. Throughout the play they portray the idea of protecting their reputations.
Proctor tried to prove his innocence by saying that the women he committed adultery with was trying to get him labeled as a witch and ruin his reputation. No one at the court believed that Proctor would do such a thing as commit adultery, Proctor told the court that his wife knew about him committing adultery and that she was an honest women that hasn’t ever lied in her life. When Elizabeth was brought in was asked whether or not Proctor had committed adultery. She lied to the court saying that Proctor had not committed adultery, not knowing that proctor had already confessed to doing it.”Elizabeth, tell the truth!”(113) This ruined Elizabeth Proctor's’ reputation of being a woman who has never lied, she chose to lie instead of ruining her husband’s reputation, but she was too late because Proctor had confessed to it ruining. This caused both of their reputations to be tainted because some people believed that Proctor was telling the truth and that tainted Elizabeth’s reputation of never lieing. Proctor's reputation was tainted by some people believed Elizabeth which had to mean Proctor was lying about himself committing adultery and that meant the women who he committed adultery with wasn’t just trying to frame him for being a
Here, Proctor proclaims that he cannot bear to commit another sin by lying in court. This shows how he had gained good moral principles and became a more righteous person than before. Furthermore, when Proctor was asked to sign a paper when confessing to witchcraft, he tore up the paper and proclaimed that one should “show honor now, show a stony heart and sink them with it” (Act IV, Lines 208). Here, Proctor finally made up the resolve to stick with the truth than lie. This shows how he had now become a man of integrity who is will willing to stick to the truth even at the cost of his life.
Proctor’s internal quality and sense of self-worth are illustrated when he pronounces to Danforth and Parris, “You have made your enchantment presently, for presently I do think I see a few shreds of goodness in John Proctor. “Not sufficient to weave a pennant with, but white sufficient to keep it from such dogs” (Miller pg 144). Delegate endeavors to come to terms with his past sins and recognize that he is more than his shortcomings; they needn’t until the end of time weigh him
This quote shows how Proctor regrets having an affair with Abigail and does not wish to continue it any longer. Since their encounter, John avoids Abigail as often as possible because he wants to prove to his wife that he truly feels sorry for what he did. He wants to prove that he has changed his ways and that he is a trustworthy man. John loves his wife very much and he tries to show her that the affair was nothing but a mistake. However, Elizabeth still doubts him. “Spare me! You forget nothin’ and forgive nothin’. Learn charity, woman. I have gone tiptoe in this house all seven month since she is gone. I have not moved from there to there without I think to please you, and still an everlasting funeral marches round your heart. I cannot speak but I am doubted, every moment judges for lies, as though I come into a court when I come into this house!” (Proctor,
In The Crucible written by Arthur Miller, Elizabeth Proctor is the wife of John Proctor one of the main characters. Elizabeth is bitter towards John for having an affair with Abigail Williams “John, if it were not Abigail that you must go to hurt, would you falter now? I think not” (Miller 193). Elizabeth says realizing that Johns still has feelings for Abigail “She cannot pass you in the church but you will blush “(197) and is bitter that it is not her he holds close to heart “I think you be somewhat ashamed, for I am there, and she so close” (197). Elizabeth is strong for staying with John when Abigail is trying to take her place “It is her dearest hope, John, I know it.
Have you ever done something wrong that you feel terrible guilty for and there is always that one person who will never let you live it down? That is the setting our two characters are cursed with. The two characters only made it worse by committing , arguably, one of the worst sins, adultery. When comparing two characters, John Proctor and Arthur Dimmesdale, from two different books, The Crucible and The Scarlet Letter, many may believe this to be difficult. Although they seem so similar, their differences seem to stand out amongst their many similarities. Both characters are alike by being hypocrites who judge others for their crimes, yet carry out a secret life of adultery, but differ in how much they loved their partners in crime and how
Throughout the play it becomes apparent that Proctor hates the lies he has told, seeks to protect the truth
Proctor said this because he was angry and resentful to the judge. The judge had very little reason to accuse his wife. This causes Proctor to become bitter. Human nature teachers this because humans strive for the truth. Whenever the truth is twisted humans become bitter and spiteful.
"How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave my name!" (Proctor) John Proctor a farmer, and the husband of Elizabeth. He had an affair with Abigail Williams while she worked as a servant in his house. John is a powerful man in both build and character. " John Proctor is a tormented individual. He believes his affair with Abigail irreparably damaged him in the eyes of god, his wife Elizabeth, and himself. True, Proctor did succumb to sin and commit adultery; however he lacks the capacity to forgive himself." (www.cliffsnotes.com) John Proctor goes from being loved and well respected to a sinner and later on becoming a tragic hero which was surrounded by strong feelings and beliefs.
The police play a big part in making roadways safer for everyone. One way they do this is properly administering various tests to determine if a driver is inebriated. One commonly used test measures the breath of a driver, determining the blood alcohol content of the individual. Another test commonly employed is a visual test that examines a driver’s eyes, and their ability to walk a straight line, referred to as a field test. These tests are used when a police officer suspects a driver of being inebriated. However, these tests aren’t fool proof. In fact, the following is an account of a real incident that took place where the normal procedures of determining impaired driving didn’t go as planned and led to a Tampa police officer being the
The Superiority Complex of Atwood’s Penelope Unlike many versions of Helen of Troy, in The Penelopiad Margaret Atwood paints the infamous woman as a siren, a goddess, and a murderer. By making the reader see Helen’s imperfections through Penelope’s eyes, new layers are added to this character so often explored in literature. Helen and Penelope’s dynamic relationship adds a layer to not only The Penelopiad, but also to the male-dominated Odyssey. These factors create a dynamic feminine force that informs both characters: without each other, they would not be as interesting as they are.
Neighbourhood involvement could also be described as community involvement. Burton recognises that Community involvement is seen as an important part of place making:
