The people who live there are suspicious of Silas for several reasons, he is very different from the other people in the village, while they gather together to, "drink a pint at the Rainbow, or to gossip at the wheelwright's; he sought no man or woman...". Silas let suspicion grow around him while he hid himself away at his loom. He also was once was found by Jem Rodney having a "fit" while standing straight up. In the novel The Things They Carried Tim O'Brien often brings up Jimmy cross’s love for Martha and how he struggles expressing they way feel feels about her. “Right then he thought he should’ve done something brave”(O’Brian 5) Cross felt much regret because he did not act on his feelings. He did not have the courage to express his love they way he wanted to towards Martha. Jimmy Cross, who had been in love with Martha for quite sometime even though she didn't feel the same way tried to play it off as if he had gotten over her.
“Bartleby is blind but he sees. The lawyer has eyesight but he is blind. Unlike Bartleby, he does not know where he is. He is in prison without knowing it. He has learned nothing. He has gained no insight into himself or into his society, and he has gained no understanding of Bartleby’s rebellion. He has denied his own capacity to love. What remains is only the sentimentality that emerges in his final words of pity and self-pity. “Ah Bartleby! Ah Humanity!” (Melville, p. 45) (Shulman, p. 22)
If Phillip Malloy had sued the schools the school would have won. There were plenty of witnesses telling of what Philip did, and plenty of examples of why Philip was wrong.
1. An earnest desire for some type of achievement or distinction, as power, honor, fame, or wealth, and the willingness to strive for its attainment
Knowledge plays an incredibly large part of Mary Shelly’s novel, Frankenstein. I think that Victor’s obsessive and unhealthy search for knowledge is the true cause of his suffering. Not only does he neglect his friends and family while working to create the monster he puts his own health in danger. “I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body. For this I had deprived myself of rest and health.” In this quote we see that Victor stops at nothing to find if he would be successful with his creation. Victor has made this project such a main priority that once it is completed and the creature comes to life he does not know what to do. Since Victor has met his goals and done what he said he wanted to do he does not want to deal with the being he just created so this becomes a problem for him. We see that Victor was very troubled by this whole experience when he says, “You seek for knowledge and wisdom, as I once did; and I ardently hope that the gratification of your wishes may not be a serpent to sting you, as mine has been.”
Matt meet’s his new teacher for the first time,”‘ Learning is fun!’ said Teacher. ‘I’ll bet you’re a smart boy. I’ll bet you learn all your lessons fast and make your mommy proud of you’ […] ‘He can read a bit, though.’ ‘Reading is fun!’ Teacher said in a hearty voice.”(71). During this quote, Matt has just met his new teacher who tells him to call her “Teacher.” Matt notices how she acts a bit off or different than other people he has met. Most of the dialogue in this quote comes from Teacher and some of the words are from Tam Lin speaking for Matt since Matt still hasn’t spoken yet. This is indirect characterization for Teacher. In this particular quote, the author is using the method “speech” to show the teacher’s feelings towards teaching. Earlier in the book, the author also uses Matt’s thoughts to characterize Teacher as being a little bit weird. From this quote we can figure out that Teacher is very excited and optimistic based on the amount of exclamations she uses. We know that she is very cheerful based on the way that she talks about how learning and reading are
Decisions are what direct a average person's life. Some decisions are easy some are hard. But that’s the way of life and how it works.
What would you do if you were in a family crisis and given a 10,000 for your family member passing away? In the play Walter Younger goes through many different moral problems and has bad ego due to the money that has been given to the family. In this play during the late 1950s, there was a lot of racial problems, black skin color was discriminated and abused. Walter younger shows that he cares more about money rather than caring about his families care and well being. He rather open up a liquor store to get more money and keep his family living in the ran down apartment not thinking about all of the bad stuff that can possibly happen to his kin. Throughout this book making this a great mood changing book to read many sequal of events happen throughout the book.
In the book, The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, the protagonist, Matteo Alacrán was not born but harvested. As the book goes more in depth, Matt has an unbearable final battle and figures out his true identity, which turns him into the hero that he becomes.
Matteo Alacrán is a clone, which are the roadkill of the land called Opium in the book The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer. Matteo, also known as Matt throughout the story, is the clone of the Lord of Opium, who we later find out is a very evil man. At a young age, he had no friends besides his guardian, Celia, and lived in an isolated place in the farms of Opium. When he was six years old, he is found by 3 children. Steven is the original Matteo Alacran’s Great-Great-Grandson, while Emilia and Maria are the children of the Senator of the United States. At first sight, they believe Matt is an eejit, which is like a zombie, until Matt breaks the window and jumps out, landing on glass and passing out.
Night is filled with a multitude of memorable and meaningful quotes. Elie Wiesel’s words speak about the horrors, feelings, and questions that many victims of the Holocaust had.
The existence of fate and free will also play a huge part of Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein. Shelley uses the foil characters of Victor and his monster to illustrate the differences between the beliefs in fate versus free will. While Victor Frankenstein listened to his professor speak on the powers of modern science, Frankenstein feels as if the professor’s words were “the words of fate”, that they prompted him to find the secrets of creation, and that that day “decided [his] future destiny” (Shelley 27-29). This quote prepares the audience for the upcoming events and that to Victor, those events were fully prompted by fate. Victor uses the existence of fate to rationalize his actions which helps the audience understand his motives more thoroughly. This quote also features a slippery slope
One of the other main characters in the first three chapters is Aaron. According to the name meaning sources (links above) the name Aaron means in American, Biblical, or Hebrew the ‘exalted one.’ or in other words, a person in high ranking. This name, majorily does not support the character as the meaning doesn’t necessarily support the character in this case in the first three chapters. Proving so, Jane Yolen implies, “‘He’s starting again,’ she whispered to Aaron. Aaron shrugged.”

When I started reading Wieland I was very confused. As I started to read further I developed an understanding of many characters and their beliefs and personalities in the story. Wieland starts as a very faithful and believer in God at the beginning of the story. To show this is my first quote. In this quote Wieland is very sick and laying on what seems like his death bed.
