Signs:
The Eight Miracles Pointing to Jesus as Messiah
Not all miracles are signs pointing to the deity of Jesus, but all signs are miracles. Signs communicate unique teachings in addition to their demonstration of power of God (“Thoughts on the Eight Signs of John’s Gospel”). John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, only records eight of the many miracles preformed by Jesus during his three year ministry on earth. John chose miracles that reveal Jesus as God in the flesh. This reflection of Jesus as God incarnate can be seen from a different angle in each of the recorded miraculous signs.
Turning Water to Wine (John 2:1-11):
This is the first sign that is recorded in the Gospel of John. Jesus is an invited guest at the wedding

Jesus defied gravity and walked upon the water. He was not swimming, nor was He tipping over from the strong wind. He was walking upon the water as if it were dry land. Only God can change the universal laws of creation, such as gravity, to accomplish His miracles, thus proving that everything is subject to His command!
Healing of a Blind Man (John 9:1-12): At this point in time, Jesus is walking with his disciples and they see a man who has been blind from birth. The disciples ask Jesus who had sinned, this man or his parents, to cause his blindness. It was customary to think that physical ailments were the direct result of sinful acts. Jesus explained that no one’s sin had caused this man his sight, but that God’s amazing power was going to be displayed in this man’s life. Jesus then spits on the ground and forms a mud paste and smears it onto the man’s eyes. He tells the man “Go wash in the Pool of Siloam” (The Nelson Study Bible, John 9.7). and the man obeyed and he received his sight! Jesus could have spoken the word, as times before, and the man would have been healed instantly. However, this time He reached out and offered the man healing with a concoction of saliva and dirt, but the man had to have faith enough to follow His instructions for complete healing. Only God could have used odd elements as spit and dirt to bring healing and restoration.
Raising Lazarus from the Dead (John 11:1-44): Now Jesus had a friend named Lazarus had become
97-98- “He doesn 't work miracles in our lives so we can just hang out with Him.” Jesus does not work miracles so we can sit in amazement. Instead, he wants us to live in response to all He has done for us.
Jesus performs many miracles throughout the Gospels. Comparing how he presents these wonders among different books can help display the author’s themes and goals in these Gospels. Jesus’ first miracle, turning water into wine, is only mentioned in the book of John. This story is called “The Wedding at Cana” (John 2:1-12). Jesus and his disciples attend a wedding and Jesus’ mother is concerned that there is no wine left. He asks the servants to fill their jars with water, but when the steward tasted the water it had become wine. Another interesting miracle story is Jesus walking on water (Mark 6:45-52). In this story, Jesus’ disciples leave on a boat, while he stays back to pray. He then walks on water towards their boat, and the disciples were afraid when they saw him. Each of these stories involve water and display Jesus’ great power, but their differences are even more significant.
gods being human. He is a well developed person. You see every aspect of John.
Another thing people usually think about when they think about Jesus is that he is associated with miracles. He healed a blind man, healed a leper, turned water into wine, healed a paralyzed man, and so much more. When people think Jesus, they think of the man who walked on water.
In the Gospel of John there are eight miracle signs that are recorded that are performed by Jesus in this Gospel. In the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) the Prince of Life doesn’t show or give any miraculous signs to prove his authority. In the Abramic religions, these eight signs are actual events from the beginning of His ministry with the turning of water into wine to the final miracle of a miraculous catch of fish after the death and resurrection of Christ. Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples which are not recorded in the book But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah the Son
Nowadays, people in general tend to use the word miracle when referring to a surprising event, such as the Patriots coming back from a 25 point deficit to win Super Bowl LI, or the American hockey team winning at the 1980 hockey Olympics, dubbed a “miracle on ice”. However, these so called miracles do not portray the actual meaning of the word, which is defined as an effect or extraordinary event in the physical world that surpasses all known human or natural powers therefore is ascribed to be a work of God. Although there has been some skepticism among people, Christians included, as to the existence of miracles, this paper will argue that true miracles do occur. Furthermore,
Something we all love about Jesus was his ability to preform miracles on human beings just like us. Yancey tries to explain why Jesus was on this earth and did the things He did while he was here. Yancey begins to describe some of the miracles Jesus did like water to wine for example. Then Yancey questions why some of these miracles were preformed and why some were not. This was hard for me to understand because I have never thought about this before. Why did some people receive the blessing of healing and others did not? Honestly, I begin to come up with my own thoughts and begin to think I cannot compare people that received and people who did not. When we
Miracles are not always prevalent at times, but are ways for God to bring the world closer to how He had originally intended the
Throughout his life, Jesus performed many miracles. Examples of these miracles can be found in the Holy Bible in the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). I would have to say that my favorite miracle performed by Jesus would have to be when Jesus fed the four thousand, in Mark 8:1-13. Jesus was surrounded by a large crowd and felt compassion for them. He wanted to provide food for everyone so they would be strong enough to travel back to their homes. They only had seven loaves of bread and a few fish, but after Jesus gave thanks and broke the bread, he told his disciples to pass out the food, and they did. When everyone was finished eating there was seven basketfuls of broken pieces left.
John saw God do a lot of great things. John wrote about when Jesus turned water into wine. Jesus was at a wedding when the host ran out of wine. He did not know what to do. Jesus told them to fill up the jars with water, and then said take some to the master of the house. The man who took the water was very nervous, and did not think it would work. When the master tasted the water and it was wine. John also wrote about Jesus healing people at the pool. Jesus saw a man lying by the pool wanting to get in. But every time he would get close to the pool, someone else would get there
Throughout the New Testament are recounts of the miracles that Jesus performed to give proof that He was indeed the Son of God and the Messiah foretold of in the Old Testament. John chose to recount only seven of the many miracles that Jesus performed. He felt that these seven, more than any of the others, showed definitive proof that the Messiah, the Son of God, had come as promised.
Miracle can be defined as powerful deeds and signs that Jesus accomplished. In the bible there are very many miracles that occurred during the time of Jesus. Lohfink defines miracle as a challenging act, in contrast with the bible which views it as an unusual act that relieves a person of negative aspects in their his or her life. Lohfink further clarifies that with the modernism influence, the miracle concept is going through a strip stream, where through miracles God breaks natural laws to show his love for us (Lohfink
John composed this book to show how glorious messiah by using the miraculous signs. It is believed that Jesus performed seven Gospel Signs to prove that he was the messiah. One of the signs that Jesus used happened in Cana in Galilee when he turned water into wine. Jesus was attending a wedding ceremony together with his mother and the twelve disciples. At some point the host announced that they were out of wine and Jesus offered to help by changing 180 gallons of water to vintage wine. This miracle signified that God was present in his life and accommodative. He made his disciples to believe in him (Harris,
The first thing that one needs to understand is the true meaning of the miracles Jesus performed, even though the Devil does not want us to understand the meaning. He loves when we speculate and question. In the Bible, miracles are often referred to as “signs.” Miracles are acts that only God can be responsible for, usually above and beyond natural laws. Baker’s Dictionary of the Bible defines a miracle as “Synthesizing the root connotations of these terms, we may define a miracle biblically as an observable phenomenon effected by the direct operation of God’s power, an arresting deviation from the ordinary sequences of nature, a deviation calculated to elicit faith-begetting awe, a divine inbreaking which authenticates a revelational
The second sign that Jesus performed in the book of John is the healing of the nobleman’s son (4:46¬–54). This sign is more easily found because Jesus here calls out the nobleman, saying that unless he sees “signs and miracles,” he simply won’t believe (v.48). In this passage, an official comes to Jesus asking him to heal his son. However, the official wants Jesus to go to his house. Jesus decides to answer his request but in a different way. Instead of going to the man’s house, Jesus simply told him that if he believed and went home, his son would be healed. The official did as told, and his son was healed. Jesus performed another miracle, but how is his deity displayed. Jesus shows his deity here by healing the official’s son by simply speaking and not seeing nor touching. During this time, just like every other time in history, there have been doctors. If Jesus went to the official’s house and healed the boy, it could be possible that Jesus would be viewed as such. However, since Jesus did the miracle just by spoken word, his power must be great. In fact, He must be God.
