In the movie, Signs the messages that the director is trying to convey is to not lose faith and dwell on a loss because that results in losing time with the people that are still around, and faith should not be lost because the ultimate plan is unknown.
In this film Graham’s wife Coleen dies, in turn Graham loses faith in God, and their son Morgan gains hatred for his father due to the loss of his mother. Graham was a local minister, though once his wife died he lost his faith and stopped ministering. There was a point where Graham did not want to believe in God because he did not want to have to hate God. Graham’s son, Morgan, gained hatred for his father after his mother died because he felt as if Graham could have somehow protected and saved her. Meryl was good with a baseball bat because he was destined to the moment that he had to kill the alien with the bat. Boa, Graham’s daughter was consistently leaving water around the house because water was kryptonite to the aliens. Morgan had asthma, because his respiratory system was destined to fail when the alien tried to poison him. At this instant Graham accepts the fact that Coleen’s death was a part of God’s ultimate plan, and that everything God does is for a reason. This time in the movie is where Grahams is able to transition from believing in philosophy two back to believing and philosophy one. Which was an important factor in bringing his family back together and becoming able to overcome the grief that resulted from Coleen’s death.
Overall, the director of Signs message was God has a plan and in order to see that plan’s meaning and reason you have to believe. The director creates this message through the growth of the family, and the trials that they had to work through together to overcome their grief, and survive the alien
