Sickle Cell Anemia is a very serious disorder and people suffer from it every day. It is a genetic disorder that causes the hemoglobin in the red blood cell to distort and form into a sickle like shape. The name comes from the shape of the blood cell after it is mutated. A person who has sickle cell anemia got it from inheriting from the parents. It is the most common inherited disorder in the United States. It is also has four other names this disorder can go by HbS, Hemoglobin S Disease, SCD, and Sickle Cell .(https://ghr.nlm.nih.gov)the blood cell is formed wrong turning it into a sickle or crescent shape. When the sickle cells go through they can block up blood vessels and cause severe pain, fatigue, paleness, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, and/or yellowing of eyes and skin. This can also start in early childhood and cause you to have a low number of red blood cells. This disorder can affect major organs such as lungs, kidneys, spleen, and brain. Then the scientist look at your blood through a microscope and see if your blood cells look like sickles or crescents. This test is a follow up test for the complete blood count test. That is the next test. This test is called the complete blood count test. This test is done by testing a bunch of things in your blood system. Sickle cell anemia causes low blood cell numbers so if you have a low blood cell count then that is a red flag and they do more test. This test can also help monitor sickle cell.
The next test is the Hemoglobinopathy evaluation. This test finds unusual forms or abnormal amount of hemoglobin in the red blood cell protein. Every newborn in the U.S. is required to have this test to test for sickle cell.
How many people are likely to have this disease?Is there a specific type? There is a very small percentage of people who have sickle cell anemia. There is about 8% of americans who have sickle cell anemia. The most common people to have it is african american children and adults. About 1 in 13 african americans have SCD and 1 in 365 black children have this disorder. There is approximately 70,000 to 100,000 americans who have SCD.
