Sibling Relationships In John Hinton's The Rich Brother

From the time a child is born to the age of maturity, they are molded into what society has interpreted as normal. These fragile adolescent years are crucial to the development of the child's behavior, which bares the question of how important a sibling’s role plays in this development. Humans learn their behaviors and morals through the interaction with one another, feeding off of each other’s experiences. This dependency on others is shown through sibling relationships, even more so in the story of "The Rich Brother". In "The Rich Brother", we are introduced to two brothers very different from each other. Pete is a very successful real estate agent, living a normal middle class life with his wife and kids. His brother Donald, rather, lives with a religious group in a commune. Although they had both been raised similarly, they had grown up very differently, shaping their behaviors and personalities today. Donald was a more reserved person than Pete, but also was very naïve and optimistic. This leads Pete and Donald into some disagreements throughout their trip back to Pete’s house. Whether Donald needs to borrow money or a place to stay, Pete is always there to clean up his mess. Donald doesn’t enjoy asking his brother for these favors, but it shows that through thick and thin, a brother is a brother. Though Donald is a bit more optimistic than his older brother, he finds himself in sticky situations quite more often. Whether he’s giving money away to strangers based on stories and tales, or accidentally starting a fire at his commune, Donald cannot seem to get things right.
