The soil of the middle-east stained with the blood of our American soldiers just so we can not take advantage of our right to vote. Though sometimes questionable, America's overall image portrayed to other countries is an honorable one. America is known for its democracy and as well as being a land of opportunities and many freedoms. America's assortment of ethnicities and cultures is proof that our country is a desirable one. Wars are being fought at this very moment to defend these freedoms.

What does it mean to be an American? In my eyes to be an American means to have privileges, rights, and freedom. America isn't perfect, but it is one of the only countries that have rights given to people of different diversities and gender. America does not have tremendous poverty. Instead we have choices given to us by the people who fought and died for the American people. Without George Washington and the other patriots who planted the first seed in the ground and help plant the American nation we live in now who knows what America would be like now.

Transitions are never an easy thing to conquer. It is often hard and stressful to cope with changes to one’s surrounding, but in the cases in which one manages to conquer this obstacle, elevation of knowledge and experience are great results gained from this achievement. I originally came from Africa and recently moved to the United States to join my mother and my step father. This great change in the things I had become accustomed to in my daily life was not easy, furthermore taking into account the fact that I had never experienced a transition so little as shifting from one residence to another.

There are events in life, which can change yourself or your way of thinking. As for me, I think the major change in my life occurred when I moved from France to America. This change has entirely affected my personality. Why? I arrived in the United States during the summer of 2002. It was really hard for me since my parents had only told me about the move in April of that year. Therefore, I did not have the time to prepare myself psychologically. My parents had talked about coming here for a very long time, even before I was born. Everything started in 1973. Do you consider yourself to be an American? Being an American is not just having a citizenship or living in America it is much more. America doesn’t just allow the people inside the country to stay, but America gives everyone a second chance at life and give them more opportunities. America has had a long strive for freedom and independence, making the opportunity of living here that much more special. International students focus many challenges when they are studying for the first time at a university in the United States. Different countries have different culture, so, many of these challenges are culturally-bound. For Chinese students, the greatest challenges to success are likely to be academic study and social life. With a bit of knowledge ways and preparation beforehand, international students can overcome these challenges and have enjoyable and successful undergraduate career.

Studying in abroad is one of the greatest social and academic challenges for international students as they have to adjust in new culture and live with completely new people. Studying abroad is a decision which should be considered carefully and you should take this decision about completely understanding the social and academic challenges that one could face in a new culture (Wendroff, 2016). When I took the decision of coming to the United States of America and to study in a completely different environment and culture, I knew that I would have to go through a lot of social and academic problems and challenges. which needs a lot of patience and understanding to adjust in new culture. In this paper, I will discuss my social and academic challenges and how anyone can going through those challenges and deal with them. Major challenges that will be under discussion in this research are: how can you understand the American culture? How can you become more independent in everyday life? How can you improve your speaking and listening ability?

Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck advocate that cultures mature into different states depending on their value orientations. These orientations involve human’s relationships with nature, time, motive, human behavior, and other humans. Most cultures develop by putting their value into some aspects of these orientations over others. An example, Americans put value into nature and their relation to God. When only comparing the world’s industrialized nations, America is known for having a higher percentage of citizens that believe in God. Thus, this illustrates how America has been shaped by this orientation.

Studying abroad, which has become a common phenomenon, can be a fun and meaningful experience. Many university students are interested in studying abroad because it gives them an opportunity to explore different cultures and broaden their horizons. As Mark Sherry, Peter Thomas and Wing Hong Chui argue in “International Students: a Vulnerable Student Population,” the goals that students pursue international study are often to acquire different ways of learning and to improve cross-cultural understanding, which helps them gain self-confidence as well as maturity (33). Last year I came to the USA for my studying life as a Chinese international student. I have evaluated to chose ASU from a few universities. But I still faced many hard challenges at the beginning. The three main challenges are the temperature, language and personal psychological quality of being alone in an unfamiliar country. However, I have come here for almost half a year and I have summarized some suggestion through my personal experience and some researching to live better in here.

International students face many different challenges when studying abroad. This is due to many factors. First, they are living in a country very far away from their own. The country they are studying at has a very different way of life than theirs. Further more, the laws in that country are much different than the laws in their own country. Due to that they face a lot of problems trying to adapt to this new culture.
