Books have been banned for many, many years. In history books have been burned do to the content of the book. In Germany, Adolf Hitler would burn books that went against him and communist ideaology. The First Amendment is now used to protects these rights. The First amendment was established because United State citizens demanded a guarantee of their basic freedom. The First Amendment allows a writer to write what they want and for a reader to read what they want. Freedom of Speech is protected under this amendment which allows the writer and reader to do the things that were just listed. The First Amendment includes other things then Freedom of Speech. The First Amendment should be protected because it protects Americans right to their opinions and …show more content…
The book was banned for many reasons, including the main character of the novel Holden. Holden has a very negative outlook on life which is one of the reasons why the book was banned. He also hires a prostitute, which is inappropriate to younger readers. Also Holden has mental emotional problems. This book was written in the 1950s, during that time there was a negative stigma around this time. People who had mental illnesses anything from anxiety to schizophrenia were viewed as crazy. Since, it is quite obvious but not stated that Holden has depression, the people of that time would probably view Holden as crazy.
Also do to Holdens young age, he should not be involved in the acts that he is involved in including drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and using vulgar language. I think that this book should not be banned. There is inappropriate content and scences but by a certain age, mostly everyone knows about that type of information anyway. In my opinion, this book could be relatable to some teenagers know a days. The book reveals a light onto teenage problems and it can help students, or anyone for that matter not feel as alone as they might
As I see it Fahrenheit 451 should be restricted because some material of the book would be too vivid and violent for younger audiences. Sections of the literature could cause children to think that violence and to be more specific, burning things, is okay. I concur that strict parents would definitely not allow this book due to violence and some ideas that would go against someone’s
If I was the librarian, I would not get rid of (or censor) any of the books, excluding “Catcher in the Rye.”
The Catcher in the Rye has always been a book of controversy. Schools have banned it due to its vivid description of how a teeneger observes the world. Holden who is The protagonist’s sees the world as very morbid place for young people. Many people believe the book brings up controversial topics that should not be discussed among minors such as Holden Caulfield. Most of the topics expressed in the book could be acceptable in today's society but it caused many concerns and issues around the time it was released, 1951. In my opinion however this book has one of the greatest qualities in literature and thats relating to the reader. It should not be banned because adolescents have been able to identify with Holden’s
Fahrenheit 451 has been censored to high school audiences and younger because of multiples controversies and mature themes within the book. The article "Fahrenheit 451." from Novels for Students (a section of Gale Virtual Reference Library) states that one reason why Fahrenheit 451 is banned is because “The book people, represented mostly by scholars, will save humanity, while ordinary people
Salinger wrote this novel in 1951, The Catcher In The Rye was published at a time when the burgeoning American industrial economy made the nation prosperous and entrenched social rules which were to be followed especially by the younger generations.Because Salinger used slang and profanity in his text and because he discussed adolescent sexuality in a complex and open way, many readers were offended, and this caused great controversy once the book was actually released. Holden rejects middle class norms and is very bulgar when referring to things. He faces alcoholism, and constantly smokes. Salinger did not censor himself as Holden Caulfield and the vulgarity itself was enough to challenge the book. Some schools have banned it for including sex and the abuse of drugs. Some people took what was being sad in the book too serious, and John Lennon was actually murdered because his killer believed he was a phony person. Although The Catcher in the Rye is one of the most controversial books ever written, it is still taught in many English classes all around the United States, including all IB schools. Loved by many teenagers and adults for its rebellious characteristics, It is banned for its profanity, sexual content, and violence by many schools from the 60’s to the present. Its Literary importance isn’t lowered and some schools still decide to keep it for that very
There are people who would like to see The Catcher in the Rye banned from our schools because it contains disturbing issues. In my opinion they are overlooking the message that J.D. Salinger was trying to communicate. In this novel, the characters exhibit a wide scope of behaviors from honorable to ignominious. The novel presents issues such as respect for religion, or lack thereof. As though these issues were not enough by themselves, there is also the subject of intolerance of others. How, may you ask, should this novel be allowed in our schools? Well, the answer lies deep within the symbolism of the novel,
But, banned would be far too much knowledge of the Puritan ways and the immoral way of the Puritans handling a mistake or a situation like that. They have to read how people want to censor the evil thoughts and rules of the Puritan religion back then. It should not be banned so it can show teens that the individual behind the mistake is someone who can be redeemed and forgiven without being punished. This book shows every character developing and changing significantly. Each character redeemed themselves in some occurrence, and I feel like that should play a big part on why it should not be banned. Future generations need to read this somewhat feminist way of thinking and writing characters that far ahead of their time. “Hester has followed her sexual desires despite the stringent Puritan standards and freely takes the consequences of her actions. Despite the condemnation and censure of the community, Hester’s independence prevails as she sews on an elaborate A upon her dress, and as she refuses to allow herself to be totally marginalized by society.” (Westwood) At the end of the novel, Hester even comes back and volunteers to help the sick and needy and continues to sew. The townspeople, not knowing of preceding reason, even uses the long overdue A on her dresses to represent an angel. I fundamentally believe that kids in classes have to read about her path to redemption and should read a book where they do not shame the person who has made a mistake yet uses a different perspective and makes the story about how they are so much more than
Many schools throughout the United States have banned The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger from their curriculums. There has been much debate on whether or not teachers should be able to include it as a part of their lesson, and if copies should be allowed in libraries. However, without a doubt, The Catcher in the Rye should be apart of schools’ curriculums for anyone above elementary school. There are very few inappropriate themes, banning the novel would be neglecting the First Amendment, and would also ignore a good chance for teens to relate to a character their age.
According to NY Daily News, the Tennessee County Schools challenged the book in 2012 because of an oral sex scene. However, if you would have read the entire book, yes, an oral sex scene is mentioned but it is nothing teenagers don’t already know of and if you would have finished reading the section it is ended with a quote, “We didn’t have sex. We never got naked. I never touched her bare breast, and her hands never got lower than my hips. It didn’t matter. As she slept, I whispered, “I love you, Alaska Young.” Clearly the oral sex scene could not have been that bad and should not have been looked at so negatively. While I was reading the novel, I myself picked up on a couple reasons as to why the book could have been banned including: the characters using illegal drugs, smoking cigarettes and drinking while under age, talk about sexual activity and as previously mentioned, profane language. Many times throughout the book the main characters often go to their smoke spot to smoke cigarettes, or they smoke weed in their apartment, drink often and do dumb things while intoxicated. Specifically on page 94 in the book, Alaska Young and her friends are in need of alcohol and she states, “But we need booze. And they card for booze. And my ID blows. But ill flirt my way through.”, from this quote many people would find that it appears that the novel is supporting attempting to buy alcohol underage and drinking it, however, if one were to read the entire book they would realize this detail and all the rest like it are just helping portray the message and lead up to the climax. I can see where many people would ban the book for the reason they feel it promotes this type of behavior, however the students reading this book should be able to handle being exposed to this type
It was also banned for ages 12 and under and is recommended for ages 12 and up. One of the reason why is was censored or banned was because parents were worried about early exposure to drugs which could lead to temptations. Also, the parents were worried that if their children read this book alone, or in isolation, then it could be interpreted incorrectly. Although, the parents should know what their child is reading, they should know if their child is easily swayed by temptations or peer pressure. It could also be censored or banned for religious beliefs or followings of
The book tells the story of Harry and Craig, two 17-year-olds who are about to take part in a 32-hour marathon of kissing to set a new Guinness World Record -- all of which is narrated by a Greek chorus of the generation of gay men lost to AIDS.” The book has nothing bad in it it talks about two guys kissing and there is nothing bad with that if it was a girl and a guy i bet that parent would not have said anything about it. I don't think it okay for someone to try to banned a book just because they don't think it's right that it two boys kissing and narrated by gay men lost to AIDS. AIDS are a disease that people can't get rid of and there is nothing wrong with
Bosher a parent and prominent physician was disgusted that the novel was about rape and
The Biloxi school board says the subject 'makes people uncomfortable'. Being uncomfortable with something with something that people are facing heyday isn't far just to be pushed away. it is better for younger readers to gain knowledge early so that they are informed about situations that they may run into in the future. Another reason that the novel is banned is because school boards and parents say that the the racial slurs are "filthy" and "trashy". The "slur" that they are referring to is the use of the "n" word that Tom Robinson is called.
I believe that you should be mature enough and warned about it before you read it. This should be required to read in high school. It teaches a very good lesson that everyone should know about. People need to understand how tough she had it, but that she overcame that and became a better person. This book should not be banned just because one person can not handle it. Just because someone does not have the maturity level to get the concept does not mean others should be able to read it. This is an amazing novel that shows you is you think you have it worse than others that you don't and there is people struggling more than you, but it doesn't mean you cannot change it. It might take time but it is
Censorship usually falls under a list of categories that range from justifiable moral censorship, through ludicrous musical censorship, censorship can be used as a means for good, so long as the use is to censor something that doesn’t seem to have an apparent cause or worthwhile reason. But as it strictly applies to the Catcher in The Rye, there is definitive use and learning potential. To say that this is a justifiable is nonsensical. While “it could limit the influence of lyrics that glorify violence”(Claireyw https://blogs.lt.vt.edu/claireyw/2012/05/02/pros-of-censorship/), it could also limit what is seen as violence, and gives the evil sort of power that lets us redetermine what is and isn’t morally correct. And with that, music of all things should be what is limited the least in a silly facile means of a re-education on what is morally correct. The value that can be drawn out of Catcher in the Rye is immense, especially in teaching those of an adolescent age that adulthood isn’t something that can be simply avoided or not entered. You can see Holden holding onto his childhood and that adverse effect in this novel, and I believe that this is an important lesson to be learned, giving this book value. “The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything stayed right where it
