Should Teens Be Able To Have Abortion?

Among all the issues that have been fought for or against in the United States, abortion may be one of the most popular issues that Americans are passionate about. Abortion is defined as the removal of the embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy. Thousands of abortions take place every single day, and yet public opinion remains at a standstill as to whether or not abortion is ethical. Everyone holds different opinions on abortion. The proponents believe that it is the women’s private right to determine the future of the baby in her body. On the other hand, the opponents think a woman does not have the right to decide whether the person that she gives birth should live or die. They believe that life begins at conception. In fact, a person’s stance on the issue is often determined by how he views the fetus: a part of the mother’s body or as a human being. I am an opponent, and I believe abortion is murder. Also, abortion should not be legal because it harms women’s health, affects intimate relationship, and women do not have the right to decide the baby’s right to live or die.

In 2000, Frederica Mathewes-Green published “Unplanned Parenthood” in Policy Review, a conservative journal. In this article, Mathewes-Green stated that “[a]bortion is a tragic attempt to escape a desperate situation by an act of violence and self-loss,” and that society must make abortion its problem if it desires a decline in abortions anytime soon (Mathewes-Green 28). The first step to help women with their abortions is to “[provide them] with simple information about the risks of abortion and the availability of alternatives” (Mathewes-Green 30). With this step, society has a duty to inform a woman, prior to undergoing an abortion, that she may become a victim of some side effects associated with the procedure. That she may face infertility due to scraping from the suction tube or a weakened cervix that will not allow her to carry to full term. Not only must she be made aware of the risks, she must also know about the alternatives to abortion. In the United States, “there are approximately 3,500 pro-life agencies offering crisis pregnancy services” such as “shelter, medical care, counseling, maternity clothes, legal assistance, [and] other forms of aid” (Mathewes-Green 29). Most women are unaware of the choices they actually have since the rhetoric in mainstream media is always Pro-Life versus Pro-Choice without really delving into the choices that are available. Although the amount of teenage pregnancies have declined in recent years, concerns involving a young woman’s capability to care for a child at a fragile age remains bold especially with the consistent controversial topics that coincide with teenage pregnancies such as abortion. Should abortions be legal? Abortions have been a big issue since the Roe v Wade case. There have been a lot of disagreements between the Pro-life supporters and the pro-choice supporters. Pro-life supporters feel like abortions deter murder, while pro-choice supporters believe that the women should be able to make their own decisions. I am a part of the pro-life supporters because I feel like abortions are wrong for several of reasons. Why should women get an abortion if there are other choices for them to choose from?

There has been an increase on teen abortion. “About 91,000 out of 1.3 million abortions were performed on 18 year old girls and under” (Lee and Bourassa). Some teenagers begin to live in the fear of their parents that makes them think they have no other way out. Although parents have the right to know about the consequences that their daughter is about to go through. Thirty-six states have a law that requires to have teenage girls to notify their parents, prior to an abortion.

A common debate in the world today involves abortion, the deliberate end of human pregnancy, and whether or not it should be legalized. “Every year in the world there are an estimated 40-50 million abortions. On one side of the argument, people are not disturbed by this grotesque number, and on the other side there are people outraged and simply appalled. Although people attempt to deem abortion acceptable in society because of circumstances like the mother not being able to support the child or in instances of rape, it is still morally wrong.

Some teenagers get pregnant due to not knowing about the consequences of unprotected sex. Most don’t know about any of the consequences because they don’t have anyone to talk to them about it and others just doesn’t want to listen. Parents don’t think their kids will ever think about having sex so they don’t feel the need to talk to them about it but that only leads to teenagers getting pregnant without being prepared with a stable job.

Approximately there are 1 million teenagers in America that become pregnant each year. Of those teenage pregnancies 78% are unintended according to The National Abortion Federation. One in every four women will be sexually assaulted during her lifetime. There are 683,000 American woman ages 15-19 who are forcibly raped each year. Of the 683,000 raped 32,000 become pregnant each year in the U.S. For teenager’s pregnancy could possibly mean your life will come to a complete stop because you now have a child to take care of. I believe a woman who is rapped has the right to have an abortion because the child could be a continuous reminder of the horrible event. Although some may say no one should have an abortion because it’s like killing a human they probably haven’t experienced the horrifying event of being rapped. Rapped can scare anyone physically and emotionally. Although some might think a child is a blessing from God, in this case it would be the worst thing anyone could experience. Most arguments about abortion are often focused on political insinuations and the legal aspect of such actions. Some frequently asked questions’ regarding the issue is if the practice should be outlawed and regarded as murder or should women have the right to practice it. For example, prior to becoming pregnant, some women feel that they would be able to choose the abortion option without trouble. However, even with reasons why having an abortion would be the best option, some women feel that this decision would not be right for them. The right to an abortion was given by the landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade. The Court ruled that the states were prohibited from outlawing or regulating any aspect of abortion performed during the first trimester of pregnancy and that laws could only enact abortion regulations reasonably related to maternal health in the second and third trimesters, Also laws could only protect the life of the fetus only in the mother’s third trimester. () The Political division of the nation on the topic of abortion has been a heated debate for many years and continues to be a hot topic. Though those who stand against the right cannot change the law, Pro-life lawmakers have attempted to regulate around it.

As more laws are formed concerning basic human rights, this nation is certainly progressing quicker than others, but not quick enough. Activists are constantly battling to secure protection, equality, and resources for every community. We know they’re succeeding as issues, such as gay marriage, are being addressed and are close to being secured. One topic that is continuously being debated, and slowly making progress, is women’s health; more specifically, abortion rights. Granted, abortion is legal in the United States since Roe vs Wade in 1973 however, the law is constantly being targeted by conservative politicians and states. Their strategy has changed throughout the years. Instead of aiming to illegalize abortion, they are focusing on strictly regulating eligibility. For a nation that prides itself on freedom, there are still those who strive to limit and regulate women’s choices. Gender equality will not be achieved if women cannot have full control of their own bodies. Organizations such as Planned Parenthood, not only provide crucial services to sustain a safe and healthy lifestyle, but also advocate on behalf of those who are incapable of doing so. Such organizations should be encouraged and supported, instead of condemned.

Abortion is the ending of a pregnancy by removing a fetus or embryo before it can survive outside of the uterus (Google). Knowing that should abortion be legal to rape or incest victims? Yes because it wasn’t there choosing to get pregnant, that was took away from them and to me I do believe it should be legal in that case.

On the other hand some teens have gotten pregnant out of error and neglect. These teenagers in particular have been known to be rebelling in some sense and are trying to shed their childhood bonds. Acting out sexual behaviors offers the opportunity to be engaging in what seems like “adult” behavior. In an interesting way, having sexual relations irresponsibly allows them to feel like a child because they did not “Plan for
