Should Schools Switch To Year-Round School?

Year Round School Year-round schooling, also known as YRS, is a new idea that schools are trying to implement across the United States and worldwide. “As of June 2006, and estimated 2.3 million students in over 3,100 schools across the United States attended classes on a year-round school schedule.” (Chittom and Klassen). Schools that aren’t on a year-round schedule are based off of a 180- day calendar that includes a summer and fall break. With the YRS schedule the classes would run for 3 weeks then take a 2-3 week break in between. Schools should switch to year-round school because there is less setbacks and it is beneficial to the people involved.
Year-round schooling is a good idea because it cuts down on the set backs of long breaks. The summer break that everyone knows and loves used to have a different purpose then just swimming in the sun. In the 19th century the children going to school also worked on family farm, so they used this summer “vacation” to help get ready for the winter months. Families used to have a father as a primary care person. He would go off to work as the mother would stay home cook, clean, and take care of the kids during the summer of after school. Now after the Women’s movement more women have jobs and cannot always be home for the kids. (McFadden and McMahon) This causes a problem during the 180- schedule break because the kids would have to go to day care or the parent (s) would have to hire a babysitter. There are financial benefits YRS as well. Some year-round school operate on a “multi-track” system. This “multi-track” system is where only a few groups of students occupy the building at a time. This could be beneficial because there is less time where the building is unoccupied and therefore less
