Growing up in America, you most likely heard the words “drugs are bad for you” in some shape, way or form. Being a child, you are susceptible to believe the words of people older than you without knowing the reasoning behind why you should believe it. It became clear as I grew up that there were still people who continued to use drugs even through they’re clearly illegal. legalizing Marijuana for recreational use has been a controversial topic for years and is still up for debate. Today this substance is so common it’s featured in things people enjoy such as movies, TV shows and music. If marijuana were to be legalized we could potentially boost our economy, regulate the drug and its consumption, and save money on cost of enforcing the drug …show more content…
Some ask “why should marijuana be legalized?" but instead the better question at hand is "Why should marijuana be illegal?" From a philosophical point of view, people deserve the individual right to make choices for themselves. The government only has the authority to restrict those choices if the individual's actions endanger someone another person. This does not include marijuana, since the person who chooses to use marijuana for recreational use does so according at his or her own free will. Also, the government may have a right to limit individual actions if the actions show signs of a significant threat to the individual. But this argument does not cannot be applied to this topic because marijuana is far less harmful than some legalized substances such as alcohol and …show more content…
In a survey conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine 1446 votes were recorded from 72 countries and 56 states and provinces in North America, it’s no surprise the overall result was that 76% were in favor for legalizing this substance. Doctors who prescribe marijuana as an aid for people focus on its healing affects and how it alleviates suffering of the patient. Although further studies still need to be conducted on its effects, overall marijuana is a highly acceptable drug in the health industry. marijuana has never directly been associated with being the cause of disease the way tobacco is associated with cancer or alcohol with cirrhosis or in other words destruction of the liver. Casual use by healthy individuals has little to no effect on overall health, in fact a study surveyed the heaviest users only suffer from symptoms of bronchitis, but moderate smoking poses little to no risk. With its increasing support more studies may be conducted on it effects and could potentially lead it to become legal for recreational
The legalization of marijuana is a very debatable subject, some people think it is bad and should be illegal, and some people think it is good in some ways if used properly. It should be legal because it has few negative effects, it serves other purposes than getting people stoned, and it is better than other drugs.
Some Americans believe that marijuana should be legalized but most Americans believe that marijuana should not be legalized. This is a very controversial topic but also leads into questions such as,does marijuana affect your health? Based on my research i have found that it has shown to have positive effects and also negative effects. Some negative effects is that it could give you memory loss and cause exhaustion after short periods of time. Some positive effects is that its beneficial to the body of an elderly sick patient or patients that experience various amounts of pain, such as cancer patients, or people that are dying painfully. In order for these people to be able to purchase this drug, it must first be legalized.I also think that in order for those people to be able to receive the drug they should have legal clinics where these people can access the product from.
First and foremost, marijuana is legal in some states in the United States but for medical use only and other countries such as Canada have already allowed for medical marijuana to be used. (“17 Legal Medical Marijuana States and DC – Medical Marijuana – ProCon.org.”) The fact that states and other nations have allowed the use of marijuana for an important aspect like medicine should be considered in the argument of making the drug legal. Especially since it has caused no problems being used that way. Marijuana as medicine can be a pain reliever for its users. It is also beneficial to the everyday person for relief of migraines, OCD’s, ADHD, ADD, and even prevention of Alzheimer’s. The drug also has no proven or tested medical drawbacks (“10 Major Health Benefits of Marijuana.” COED. ) Unlike other drugs like sleep aids, painkillers, alcohol and cigarettes, marijuana is not addictive. Of course the argument could be made that it is but there is no factual evidence that proves this point. People that are anti-marijuana legalization will say that it is unhealthy and bad for you. All of these assumptions
Marijuana has earned itself a terrible name over the years. This plant has a long history with humans, from early medical uses to spiritual and even recreational use. In recent years, many states have seen the legalization of marijuana for medical uses. Most large scale experiments have been hindered because of the difficulty of getting experiments involving marijuana approved. Despite this roadblock for the research of marijuana, surveys and observations of the medical use of marijuana show that the plant may have legitimate medical uses. The lack of evidence showing that weed is a dangerous drug also pushes for its legalization for recreational use. Based on all of the evidence about marijuana for recreational and medical use, marijuana
The legalization of Marijuana has been an ongoing issue for many years that has lead to much controversy. Not only is smoking marijuana a risk to the person, but also every other human being around them therefore, Marijuana should not be legalized. All over the country, there are teenagers and adults that smoke marijuana for recreational purposes. Smoking marijuana has become so common recently, that to some people they do not even consider it a drug. Marijuana has detrimental effects on people. It alters physical and mental health, is extremely addictive, negatively affects people’s lives and should not be legalized.
There are no good reasons to legalize marijuana. It will have no benefits in today’s society. Legalizing marijuana will simply add on to the list of harmful intoxicants that are already being fought against such as cigarettes, alcohol, and methamphetamine. Although proponents of the legalization of marijuana claim it is for medicinal uses, there is no scientific evidence of marijuana being bad, and it is no worse than alcohol, marijuana is unacceptable because it causes destructive behaviors, lowers IQ, and causes birth defects.
Many substances on the market are just as harmful, if not more harmful than marijuana. Tobacco and alcohol are equally if not more harmful. Tobacco and alcohol are also more addictive than marijuana. Marijuana users smoke much less than the average cigarette smoker. Marijuana is also natural with no added chemicals (most of the time); unlike cigarettes that contain rat poison, ammonia, nicotine, and carbon monoxide. Tobacco and alcohol have also killed many more people than marijuana. There has never been a reported case of death due to marijuana. People have died on marijuana, but not from it. If cigarettes and alcohol are legal, this plant should be legal. A good effect from legalizing it would be taxing the plant. The government
In recent years the legalization of marijuana has been broadcasted numerous times. There is much debate on whether or not it should be legalized or used precisely for medical purposes. Legalization of marijuana or cannabis has already occurred in 29 states and the District of Columbia. Should the United States legalize it all together? Marijuana itself is the dried up hemp or cannabis plants which contain THC which is a mind altering chemical. A lot of research has been conducted on the benefits and disadvantages of marijuana in both medical and recreational use. Medical marijuana should be legal in the United States in order to provide relief for suffering patients, however it should not be legal for recreational use because it will
Marijuana, hemp, Mary Jane, pot, reefer, herb, kush, sticky icky, and weed. Whatever one may refer to the drug cannabis as, it is no stranger to the typical American. With support for the legalization of marijuana growing rapidly in numbers over the years, the debate over decriminalizing the drug is more important now than ever. Over 50% of Americans now support legalizing the drug. In a random Twitter survey given out, thirty five of the forty people were for the legalization of marijuana when asked, “ Do you believe marijuana should be legalized?” Many people today believe that marijuana is not as dangerous as it has been said to be. Even the president, Barrack Obama,
In 2012, marijuana was legalized for recreational use in Colorado. Now it is legal in Washington D.C., Oregon and Alaska, only fully legal for recreational use in Washington D.C. and Colorado. Legalization is not necessarily the issue any more. Child psychiatrist Mitchell S. Rosenthal stated, “At this point in the country’s history, whether pot is legal or not is no longer the main issue. The issue is the danger that marijuana poses to kids, how parents can protect their children from that danger, and what the rest of society—absent the criminal justice system--can do to support them.” Although legalization is rapidly spreading, it needs to come to a halt. Marijuana should not be legalized due to the dangers it poses
Almost everyone in their lifetime has been involved with a person that was addicted to drugs. Most people, when dealing with a family member or a friend addicted to drugs, want to help the drug addict in any way possible. However, many people’s attitudes change when the drug addict is not directly related to them. According to Department of Justice statistics, forty-eight percent of all prisoners in federal prison were incarcerated for drug-related crimes in 2011(Carson). Therefore, rather than being helped, drug users are being incarcerated. If our goal, as a country, is to reduce the rate of drug use and help drug addicts receive treatment, then why are we merely incarcerating those who use drugs? Although many people are against decriminalization of drugs because they are afraid of how it will affect them, few people think of how decriminalization will affect drug addicts and our country as a whole. Drugs should be decriminalized because it would benefit the economy, drug addiction treatment, drug addicts, and increase personal freedom for all United States citizens.
There is substantial evidence that certain components of marijuana can contribute to the healing and cure of many minor and major ailments. However, most of these studies have to be performed and proven off of U.S. soil or in secret since the FDA has not approved the medicinal use of marijuana and it has deemed a Schedule I drug by the DEA. Unfairly so, marijuana is treated as heroin in the eyes of the federal government. Marijuana can be manipulated by cross breeding to create certain strains with positive healing properties rather than other properties which cause the “head high”, often times considered psychotropic. The CBDs inside of marijuana have helped with epilepsy syndromes, cancer, bowel diseases, HIV/AIDS, and mental disorders
The unjust imprisonment of American citizens with over-exaggerated jail sentences (pertaining to marijuana charges) is a very big problem in the US. I chose this topic because I had heard so many horror stories of people being sentenced at least 9-10 years on marijuana possession charges just to fill prisons, and it made me extremely upset. What angered me even more was the proof of racially motivated arrests/sentencing in many instances of unjust marijuana related arrests. While these people were “busted” for carrying marijuana and subsequently jailed for decades, rapists get out in 8-9 years on average (Sex Offender Attorney). Even more outrageous, almost all those charged with marijuana possession are sentenced/punished, while only 3 of
My standpoint upon this debate is that I am FOR the legalization of marijuana. Marijuana used recreationally has many hesitant about legalization but the stance of the medical benefits cannot be ignored. There are negative effects that result from someone who may not need marijuana, for instance when marijuana is abused a person can develop a dependency and mess with one’s emotions and memory. Everything has its flaws and just like most products, it is all perfect in moderation and for purpose. Scientists have Marijuana comprised of two major compounds with include delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD). The active ingredient in which that gets you high, is the Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) reported by marijuana users, and used to help relieve pain and nausea, reduce inflammation, and can act as an antioxidant. Reasoning behind this is that oxidation damages cells and can lead to the development of disease, including Alzheimer's, heart disease, and cancer. Cannabidiol (CBD) can help treat seizures, can reduce anxiety and paranoia, and can counteract the intensity of the "high" caused by THC.
Marijuana should be legal because prohibition doesn’t help the country in any way and it causes a lot of problems. There is no scientific evidence that suggests prohibition decreases drug use because people would still find ways to abuse and use drugs but there are several theories that suggest prohibition might actually increase drug use. One effect of marijuana prohibition might actually increase drug use. One effect of marijuana prohibition is that it makes the drug available to minors. Marijuana dealers usually don’t care how old a buyer is, as long as they have the money. It
