“Should Government implement laws to prevent cyber crime”
Today is the era of technology and globalisation, as it connects the whole world together but also opens new ways to crime. Cyber crime is the result of negative use of technology. Cyber crime refers to a crime which is committed through internet or computer. Cyber crime is of differenr types like stealing of money or information, piracy, electronic vendalism that is destroying or changing the electronic information. Cyber terrorism which threatens not only one single nation but the whole world. Cyber crime can be grouped into three main categories which are crime against a person which includes provocation through e-mail. Second one is against the property, this type of crime includes provocation and third one is across the government which involves hacking into government sites. Cyber crime is emerging as a huge threat for the people and rate of crime is increasing drastically. Government should implement laws in order to protect national security, economic prosperity and society. Firstly, internet is becoming prominent source of crime for international criminals which is becoming a serious threat for the national security of the nation. Cyberstalking which means harassing an individual by the means of internet is becoming a secret threat for the government. According to the report of the United States Department of Justice’s Bureau of
There is further difficulty in defining cyberstalking because it is often a term that is interchangeable with cyberbullying and cyberharassment (Jameson, 2008, p.236). This wide array of internet criminal activity is defined along a continuum of cybercrime extending from purely in the physical world to purely in cyberspace (Gordon and Ford, 2006, p.15). The exclusionary definition of cyberstalking and distinguishing it from other similar cybercrimes helps with narrowing the definition of cyberstalking. Cyberbullying is the use of the internet to exhibit aggressive behavior aimed at intimidating or inducing fear
Some of the most common cyber-crimes are cyberstalking, identity theft, spam and phishing among others. Cyber stalking has been classified as one of prevalent cybercrimes with many internet users falling victims of cyber bullying. Cyber stalkers meet their victims in different ways; mostly they normally have a relationship either in the real world or online world. Cyberstalking starts when this relationship ends. However, strangers who have collected information on the internet can also be cyber stalkers. The desire to control and even harm their victims is what motivates cyber stalkers. They may go to the measures of personifying their victims and post messages or controversial posts on the boards and chat rooms. In this real regard, cyberstalking is a real crime (Mansourabadi, 2014).
Today people of authority are experiencing a new wave of crime, transforming how criminals are using technology to invent new crimes and rewriting the traditional methods of how crimes were once committed (PERF, 2018). Due to many advances in technology it’s becoming easier for criminals to gain information on how to commit numerous illegal acts whilst remaining anonymous, this is making it harder for people in a position of authority to find the culprit as there is only little evidence (PERF, 2018). To prove that cyber crime is becoming more popular as there were almost three hundred thousand reports of people being victimised on the internet during 2016 (PERF, 2018), This shows that crime is becoming more based on online acts and it is seen as a fast and convenient way to harm and abuse the justice system as it is extremely easy to access without the added risk of risking their identity, The rise of internet based crimes is obvious in every day use as mostly everyone has a computer or a device that is connected to the internet although due to the existing systems of measuring crimes were created for felonies committed in a psychical form not over the internet as it is becoming harder for police and other authoritarians to create any new developments regarding minimising the new crime
The agencies employed by governments to police the web in order to protect the vulnerable have seen an increase in child pornography and online fraud. The speed at which information can be distributed and the number of people that can be reached attracts those that are intent on causing harm. The term “cybercrime” is becoming more widely used. The financial gains that can be made and the anonymity the internet can provide, make the virtual world of cyberspace a haven for criminals. Although the internet has huge benefits for information gathering and social networking, in the wrong hands it can cause harm to the vulnerable and criminals are able to vanish into the underground with the use of false identities that are hard to track online.
Cyber Law was the first step taken by the government against the cyber-crime. According to this law if any one tries to destroy, alters or delete any data or damage it without any permission of the owner of the computer, shall be punishable offense. Similarly if any corporate body is maintaining or protecting data of the person or company and if any negligent act or failure found in protecting the data shall be liable to pay
”(Ian,2013) Ajeet Singh Poonia also suggested cyber-crime is dangerous than traditional crime. The first reason is many people lack of awareness and the culture of cyber security, Second, lack of trained and qualified manpower to implement the counter measures. Third, The minimum necessary eligibility to join the police doesn’t include any knowledge of computers sector. Fourth, lack of computer acts such as e-mail account policy.
The internet has brought upon a new revolution of global interconnection where contacting someone on the other side of the world is just a click away, but with this international phenomenon comes an increased susceptibility with unfamiliar technology. Internet crime is compiled of all non-physical crime with the aid of a computer. Although broad in definition internet crimes are largely composed of acts such as cyber fraud, ‘phishing’ (username and password hacking), cyber stalking and hacking. Internet crime does not pose an overwhelming issue in society in terms of its
Since 2010 there have been over 13 major cyber attacks in the US, the FBI categorizes the severity of the attack based on what could possibly be at stake such as information on US citizens or hijacking of critical information . Cyber attacks are classified as crimes committed with the aid of a computer. Cyber crimes are considered felonies, however most people who commit the crimes can usually not be found. Recently there has been an uprising in cyber crimes, in the year 2017 alone 9 minor incidents have occured (minor attacks can consist of malware and internet “trolling” which is a form of cyberbullying) and 4 major crimes have been committed. Most crimes consist of identity theft, robbery, and hijacking private information. Recently programmers have been able to build security systems that can detect a threat almost immediately. With a growing expansion of technology protecting information gets harder day by day. Cyber security is the body of technologies, processes and practices designed to protect networks, computers, programs and data from attack, damage or unauthorized access.
Cyber crime is the downside of the proliferation of the internet and the World Wide Web. As businesses and commerce transactions have moved online as software and websites are the medium through which funds are exchanged, cyber theft has taken alarming proportions. Initially the fear with a hacked computer meant that someone's internet time would be stolen, but as banks introduce branchless banking and online payments have rendered the exchange of cash currency useless cyber crime has become a significant crime. In this context officials at state level are involved in getting their hands on the culprits engaging in such activities. The article, 'U.S. Shuts Down Massive Cyber Theft Ring ' (Bartz & Finkle, 2011) is also one such piece that talks about how U.S officials shut down a ring of cyber crime which was involved in theft worth $100 million with two million personal computers affected worldwide.
Today’s world computer crimes are internet related, and in this area carrying out law barriers are either not well defined or most of the countries they don’t have arraign cyber crime laws. Those laws deliver the absence of the safe, the only substitute is protection against apparent warning exists is to develop ones own, depend on constitutional protection, a big range, and ethics to reduce constitutional entrance.
The 21st Century brought a great amount of developments on the field of communication. The most distinguished one, with no doubt, is the Internet, which enabled instant and constant communication from one point of the planet to the other. However, not everything has been grandiose: this power to communicate brought along several new ways of damaging others. One of the most common new crimes related to this phenomenon is cyberstalking, which is many times confused with both cyberbullying and cyberharassment.
In accordance with many decades of cyber evolution, a cybercrime is shown in different ranges of crimes, which depend on the spread of technology and law. From the introduction of computer in the 1960s to the rise of personal computer in 1980s, cybercrime began to appear. The crimes can vary from piracy of software to patent-related crimes. This caused a surge in the introduction of relevant legislation in many countries and international organizations involved. In late 1990s, when Internet and transnational crimes were born, the international community cooperated in many instances such as the passing of the UN General Assembly Resolution 45/121 in 1990 and the manual for the prevention and control of computer-related crimes issued in 1994. Despite all the
This crime can be perpetrated through email, social media, chat rooms, instant messaging clients and any other online medium. Cyberstalking can also occur in conjunction with the more traditional form of stalking, where the offender harasses the victim offline
The uses of Internet and computers have made life much easier; technology in general has improved the economy, medical research, and healthcare. Internet and computers have become a huge part of many people 's lives in this era; it allows individuals to stay in touch, find information, and even make a living through online businesses. When there are positive points, there are bound to be some negative ones, and that is "Cybercrime". Cybercrime is a type of crime that is committed over the Internet using computers and networks; also known as "Hacking". Cybercrimes are a major issue individual face in today 's society; this is because the number of people using the Internet has grown rapidly over the last decade. Technology is available to
In the United States, there are currently more than 85 million adults and around 10 million children with access to the Internet from a North America investigation web site fact. With these numbers you can understand why cyber stalking is so common these days more than ever. With the emergence of technology, computer crime has been increasing at rapid rate. The first type of computer crime that has the potential to cause high levels of distress and damage is cyberstalking. Cyberstalking can be defined as using the Internet or other electronic means to harass, intimidate, threaten, monitor or make unwanted advances towards another people. It can involve direct communications through e-mails, chat rooms sites, bulletin boards or social sites such as twitter, snapchat and Instagram.
