Should Drunk Driving Be Harsher Punishment

Drunk driving is a decreasing issue in the United States. However, to keep minimizing the problem the punishments need to be made harsher. “The aggressive enforcement of drunk driving laws, say many analysts, is an effective tool in reducing the number of driving fatalities and injuries,” (Drunk Driving, 1). In the United States, drunk driving claimed the lives of 10,839 people in 2009. (Drunk Driving, 1). Drunk driving should have harsher punishments because they are endangering their own lives, others’ lives, and the victim’s loved ones.
The drunk drivers are endangering their own lives by being irresponsible and reckless. “…I am facing 21 years in prison for one mistake I made and regret—to drink and drive,” (Bloom, 1). “I felt indescribable sadness, depression and anxiety. Not only had I taken the life of a young girl, but my life had been taken as well,” (Bloom, 1). People have to waste their lives away in a jail cell for making one terrible choice which they have to think about and regret every second for the rest of their lives. These consequences people have to go through could easily be avoided by the right choice. Not many realize the toll it takes on the ones responsible. “At first, my focus was on mourning my daughter and her friend. Our community, friends, and family stood with us, honoring their memories. But anger and feeling of betrayal took over…” (Doak, 1). In this case, a mother lost her daughter. Society needs to prevent these casualties for the safety of America. Loved ones can potentially become depressed, suicidal, ill, or heartbroken. Losing an innocent loved one is unbearable to some people. In cases, some people can become physically ill. All these could factor into the long term
