Final Exam: Athletes should be paid
When being a professional athlete it takes up majority of your time with many practices, games, watching film, traveling, etc. When becoming a professional athlete, it becomes your job and athletes are getting paid for their skills. But when a student becomes a student athlete at the collegiate level, they are not getting paid. College athletes spend more than half of their time on the field for their sports and many people believe that the student athlete should be paid for their skills. They think it is unfair to the student who is an athlete who is balancing out school and sports and have no time to get a job. While if you are a professional athlete you automatically are getting paid for your skills. I

When being an athlete everyone is always looking forward to game day, where the stands are full with a huge crowd and everyone cheering for them. They bring in so much money just in one game. “March Madness is one of the most watched sporting events in the country. Yet the money being made off this event is not trickling down to the players, who are the stars of the tournament” (Patterson 2). This shows that, players who travel to play in a long tournament and take time out of there days are not getting paid. Whereas a professional athlete like Jay Cutler who plays for the Chicago Bears and travels and plays gets paid $1,093,750 for each game he plays. In the article, “The Nation” it states that, “Northwester’s football team generated approximately $235 million in revenue from 2003 to 2012” (Johnson 10). They raised/received all this money from student athletes playing and people coming to watch and the athlete didn’t receive any of the money. College athletes work hard and make a fan based crowd that will pay a good amount of money to come and watch them and the athletes get none of the money that people pay to go watch them
In trying to decide what research topic I wanted to use, I took many ideas into thought. I decided that the one idea that interests me most is whether student athletes should be paid or not. This is very intriguing to me since my master’s program is sports management. In order to do this research there must be many ways to use research as well as ideas from other people. This project is a very big topic in today’s discussion amongst sport fans, college administrators, and student athletes themselves. Media has recently put more pressure on this topic as well with the Northwestern decision to unionize as well as pointing out an athletic director gaining an $18,000 supplement for a wrestler at their school winning a national
The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) has come into this essential question for sports: should college athletes be paid? They say this, “Salaries undermine the purpose of college, which is an education. Student-athletes are not employees, and their participation in college sports is voluntary.” While college players may receive full or partial academic scholarships, not a single one of them are paid. College athletes should be paid because they should have the right to earn what they are worth; in this case, of course, it would be based on skill.
If you have ever wondered why college athletes are not paid, you are not alone. If you are a sports nut, then you may have even gotten into arguments over the topic. Economic experts do not seem to agree either. If you listen to each side of the argument the answer seems gray, but if you look at the evidence the answer may become clearer. The National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) should pay Division I student-athletes who participate in men’s basketball and football, because of the amount of money they accumulate for the school and NCAA, because the sport they are a part of is a full time job, and also because many student-athletes struggle financially.
College athletes are one of the most hardworking people. They have to learn how to schedule being a regular student and playing a sport. However, the discussion of college athletes being paid or not being paid has been a huge argument, and I believe that they shouldn’t be paid. I think college athletes shouldn’t be paid because it will remove all competitive nature and passion for the game, they won’t go to class, and there is no fair way to pay all the college athletes. College athletes are not pros.
A lot of that money will be shared with the colleges. But the players will not receive any of it.” (Vardaan) So, these basketball players are taking nearly a month off of time off of their studies and personal/family life to bring in “roughly $900 million in revenue” (Berr). Still, these athletes will not see any of that money.
Collegiate athletes should be getting paid for the work they do because of how profitable college sports is to the schools. During the last twenty years, college sports has gained a lot of popularity which has resulted in a large amount of revenue for the NCAA and the schools that they represent. The athletes who perform on the field and court see none of that money. This paper will explain some of the main reasons for college athletes should get paid. College athletics is a billion dollar industry and has been successfully operating for years.
College athletes can be easily manipulated these days. Student athletes go long tedious days to stay academically eligible and also work to keep a high level of competitive play during their competitions. These athletes need to praised and rewarded for outstanding accomplishments they have achieved during their career. These athletes are not being rewarded but are also living on and off the campus without any money in their pockets. Since these athletes are living without an adequate supply of money, they are highly susceptible to grabbing money from booster clubs or any others who are very willing to help them in any way or form. The problem with this situation is that those athletes are going to get themselves and also their school’s athletic
Should College Athletes Be Paid? (Final Revision) College sports are a big part of American culture. I along with many other people watch college sports.
The Topic I decided to debate was should college athletes be paid a salary? The side that I decided to pick was the pro side. To begin every year many new college athletes get drafted, they are excited to play a college sport and represent their school. But, these students may face a different challenge outside of school. These challenges may include not having enough money to pay for tuition, not enough money for new clothes, they may still live with their parents in a spare bedroom, and they may not have enough money for food.
College athletes are spending a significant amount of time working hard on a sport, however they are not getting enough credit. College coaches are receiving a numerous amount of money for what the players are doing out on the court or field. Also, some athletes feel they need to excel more in the sport then in the classroom, which can jeopardize their future. Student-athletes have other costs they need to pay for, but they have no time for a job due to practices, workouts, and games. College athletes should be paid for playing at the collegiate level, because they would focus more on academic studies, have an easier time paying for extra costs, and the colleges earn enough money from the NCAA and the sports
Kids grow up loving to play sports in their free time. They never get paid to play when they are at a young age. They do it for the love of the game and for the need for competition. This is the way that it is in college right now. College athletes compete with all their hearts to be the best they can for their schools. They don’t get paid a cent. It has been a common debate if that is the right way to do it. Should it be that college athletes do not deserve to get paid for playing a sport? It should not be this way. College athletes certainly should get paid to play.
As a huge fan of college sports, I admire the total dedication and commitment of a student athletes put towards their respective sport. Because of their effort, college sports is more entertaining than professional sports to watch. Collegiate athletics is a huge business and the revenues add up to some $10.6 billion according to the NCAA. Some have argued that student athletes need to be paid for their work. Are student athletes primarily athletes or students? Should student athletes receive a salary for their participation? Others argue that they are students first like every other academic student on campus and getting paid for voluntary work is unfair. But, their talents bring many billions in revenue and these college athletes don’t see
College athletes are spending a significant amount of time working hard on a sport, however they are not getting enough credit. College coaches get paid the most, even more than some of the coaches from professional sports. Some athletes feel they need to excel more in the sport than in the classroom, which could jeopardize their future. Also, there are multiple other costs student-athletes need to pay for, but it is hard for them to have a source of income. Student-athletes should be paid for playing at the collegiate level, because they would focus more on academic studies, have an easier time paying for extra costs, and the colleges earn enough money from the NCAA and the sports in general that some of the profits could be rewarded to the players.
Basketball is one of the most followed collegiate level sports. With over 55 million fans that watch the sport on television alone, college basketball’s ad revenue is higher than all other postseason sports. While the NBA postseason only makes around $536 million on ads, over $1 billion is spent on ads during the postseason of college basketball. I, along with several other people, believe that with this amount of money being made on ads alone, colleges would be more than able to pay their players. However, these college basketball heroes end up gaining no money from their games.
College student-athletes have some of the most time consumed schedules of any college student. In regards to time commitment with their athletic team, that can be a full time job in itself. Not to mention the academic commitment that should come before athletic in the first place. Because college student-athletes bring so much to the table in their commitments, there has been an increased discussion on if college athletes should be paid. With increasing controversy of the topic, college athletes should ultimately be paid because they are the cause for high revenue streams of colleges, it would limit illegal or under the table payments, and because they make significant sacrifices that deserve
