Did you know that up to thirty percent of child soldiers are female? This is because they have a higher risk of being sexually abused, including rape. They are also given to the commanders as wives. In some parts of the world, such as Yemen and South Sudan, there is tremendous dispute over the subject of child soldiers. The history of child soldiers go back to WW1 and WW2. When the number of German soldiers started to drop during the war, Nazi leaders began to enlist children as young as twelve years old. The Asians also did the same when they were battling against the Japanese in WW1. In Africa, child soldiers are still used today. Child soldiers should receive amnesty because they were fighting for their just cause, they fear the consequences …show more content…
Imagine having an aggressive commander or a menial sergeants as the only adults in your life. In the interview of Ishmael Beah--a former child enlistment-- had said “the commander begins to look like your father figure and the sergeants begin to look like your brothers.” These aggressive men can not be that close to these kids. Kids look up to adults. The more they look up to them, the more the children become aggressive. Another piece of evidence is “In the Philippines and southern Thailand, children are being recruited by rebel groups (Gettleman).” The enemies are making the children fight against each other. The commanders and sergeants are not good role models by showing the kids it's okay to kill other children. To prove that these “adults” are poor role models the last piece of evidence is “The No. 1 reason that Khadr was dangerous: his father. A senior ranking al Qaeda leader now dead, Khadr’s father took him to visit al Qaeda leaders when he was 10 and to a military training camp when he was 15. (Prasow)” Omar Khadr was raised into thinking that recruiting children is okay. His own father raised him to be a commander that drafts child soldiers and sent to Guantanamo …show more content…
While this is a valid point, it fails to account for those who were forcefully drugged and/or addicted to the drugs available to them. From the article To What Extent Should Child Soldiers Be Held Accountable for their Crimes, it explains “The drugs and alcohol make the children become more compliant enabling them to commit atrocities which they never would have before.(Child Soldier-Summative Essay )” These soldiers were not in their right minds to make a serious decision like the one mentioned
Child soldiers are a problem that not many people think about anymore because people may believe that they are not a relevant issue.Child soldiers are still a very relevant and important issue. With terrorist groups like the infamous ISIS recruiting children.Former Child soldiers deserve amnesty because they don’t have a choice when becoming a soldier, they will make use of their second chance, and not all child soldiers are killers.
Jeffrey stated that “More than 200,000 children worldwide are still used as child soldiers.” This trend is reportedly present mostly in Africa, as generals need to be able to two people for every person that they lose. Moreover, it’s easy to teach kids to something that they can’t tell is right from wrong. After being trained these newly made warriors are trained to kill while being completely stoned or high on a cocaine-gunpowder mix that is given as a drug to them. The fault does not fall upon those trained to kill, but the trainees that put them up to such an awful
Child soldiers should not be granted amnesty because in some cases the soldier is in control of his or her actions. In paragraph 4 of “ Prosecuting Child Soldiers For Their Own Safety” it says “But there are cases of child soldiers clearly in control of their actions. “ who were not coerced, drugged or forced into committing
Around the globe, in the past and present, children are being recruited to fight as soldiers in wars sometimes as young as 5 and up until they are 18 or older. These children soldiers should not be given amnesty because giving them amnesty could give others encouragement to keep using them, everyone has the same rights which means everyone has the same consequences, and some child soldiers have committed the most violent and harsh acts in wartime, and they can be dangerous to keep in our country.
Recently, two million children have died over the past ten years due to becoming a child soldier. A huge deplorable development that has extended recently is the increase of child soldiers. Children are constantly being used as soldiers for various reasons. In some countries, there are more child soldiers than they are adults because children are more compliant. Children have been exploited as soldiers because they are being recruited to do a violent action, it is difficult for them to, later on, assimilate back to their lives, and child soldiers are regularly used in developing countries.
Child soldiers should be given amnesty because they were forced into having to go to war and if they refused to then they were either shot or killed. They were drugged if they said yes so then they will actually go out into war and fight. These kids knew what they were doing but at the same time they did know what they were doing and they couldn't resist it because they would be shot or most likely killed. So think about it if you were in charge of a country with child soldiers asking for amnesty would you give the child soldiers
One significant piece of evidence to support the claim that child soldiers are both the victims and be given amnesty is Ishmael who is a former child soldier who has been given amnesty and he tells others about his experience as a child soldier. He was taking refuge in a camp and forced to be a soldier. Before, he and other child soldiers went on missions they were given drugs and he does not remember much of what he had done. This piece of evidence supports the claim that child soldiers are the victims and should be given amnesty, because it shows that they do not have a choice in becoming a soldier and are given drugs so they are not are thinking clearly and they don’t know what they are doing.
First off, child soldiers are often forced to be recruited. “Often they are abducted at school, on the streets or at home.” ("From Cradle to War." Amnesty International. Amnesty International USA, Web. 3 May 2016.) Almost all child soldiers are forced to do things as a soldier that they wouldn’t actually do, such as hurt or kill others. So although some child soldiers want to hurt or kill, most don’t want to. So obviously, most child soldiers are forced to do bad things that they don’t want to do, and wouldn’t do if they hadn’t become a soldier.
Even though evidence proves otherwise, many people claim the large quantity of guns in the United States are culpable for the country’s murder rates. While the United States population and number of guns have steadily gone up since 1994, the rates of all different crime types have drastically gone down (Planty). Over the last nineteen years, almost fifty million guns have been added to the US, yet firearm violence has been reduced by more than two thirds (Federal Bureau). This completely contradicts the statement that more guns equal more violence. To compare the two, solely based on these statistics, it looks as though the upsurge of guns and armed citizens has only led to less violence. Another example, that disproves this, is the Firearm Act of 1997. After a school shooting, the United Kingdom passed this act banning almost all of their guns. That year, the UK had initially recorded seven hundred and thirty-four homicides. While only steadily increasing, by the year 2002, they had a recorded one thousand and forty-one homicides (Osborne). This act did not prevent homicides at all, and as a matter of fact it only created more violence. The District of Columbia is another case in point on how the lack of guns does not mean there is any lack of violence. DC has a 3.6% gun ownership ratio of the people living there, ranking it the lowest in the Unites States. At the same time, DC has the highest gun deaths and firearm robberies in the Unites States. The District has a
Not too long ago boys as young as twelve were being forced into the military being used as minefield cleaners during the 1980s. Generally children were drugged or threatened into the military lifestyle, they had no choice or themselves or even their families would suffer consequences. The situation of child soldiers not being granted amnesty is just getting out of hand when it is really not their fault, because they were forced into the military. Therefore child soldiers should be granted amnesty for their war crimes.
A good portion of the American public pays attention to politics, so the upcoming Republican primaries have quickly become the newest fixation for many— the contest is shaping up to be action packed, fast paced and has no certain resolution. Every year, elections quickly become interesting and exciting, and this one is no different—‘race to the right’ seems to be the new trend this cycle. Primaries have always been competitions to prove that the candidates are the most something candidate running (past categories have included anti-communist, pro-peace, and experienced), but the Republican Party’s continued interest in being strongly conservative is relatively unheard of. For example, the 2000 Republican primary took a largely personal turn, as negative ads overwhelmed airwaves, while the 2008 Republican primary seemed to focus more about Mitt Romney’s personal issues (flip-flopping, Mormonism, and wealth).
This is because they can be “easily intimidated and indoctrinated. They lack the mental maturity and judgement to express consent or to fully understand the implications of their actions… children don’t often think of the bigger picture.” Wondering why? Well, according to science, the frontal lobes, the parts of the brain that control decision making, only fully develops well in your 20’s. What this is suggesting is that the children enlisting to become child soldiers don’t have fully developed frontal lobes, so they “lack the ability to think of the long term consequences of their
Children recruited into the armed forces in these countries are forced by their commanders to commit atrocities against other soldiers and villagers. They may also suffer through punishments themselves. Commanders have been known to force their child recruits to witness and/or commit abuses against their own families or captured prisoners (“Coercion and Intimidation of Child Soldiers to Participate in Violence” 1). For instance, child soldiers recruited into Uganda’s Lord’s Resistance Army have been forced to tie their parents to trees and club them to death or be killed themselves (Taylor 1). Physical
Did you ever wonder what people did a long time ago? Well I’m going to answer that question for you but comparing two special civilizations. I’m comparing Ancient Egypt and Ancient India. Should child soldiers be given amnesty? This controversial question has been on individuals’ minds for a long time. But these poor children are victims of the wars and battles they have been forced to fight in. These poor children should be given amnesty, but only if they are mentally and physically ready for it.
