Football is, in a sense, an amalgamation of what we perceive our nation 's values to be: teamwork, dedication and self-sacrifice. These values can be attributed to most any team sport though it is football that has become our favorite, satiating our lust for brutality. While this is not inherently a bad thing, the sport poses a much greater risk of concussions that other sports, more specifically to high school students. These injuries have previously had unknown long term effects but are now linked to dementia, depression and irritability and a wide range of other medical issues. Most players whether in high school or the NFL are painfully unaware of the risks that concussions may have on them. While banning football on a professional level is implausible, football should be removed from high school as the risks are insurmountable, especially when the same athleticism and character building can be found in most other team sports. Most players, regardless of their level of play are ill informed of the frequency and the potential long term effects of concussions. The NFL recently paid “$765 million in restitution...to former players” (Banks 605) for concussion-related lawsuits. Schools often doing just as poorly as the NFL at informing players, using consent forms that do not fully explain potential injuries or worse, downplay their frequency and severity. Often times though even players who do know the risks play the game as “ college ball is dangled as one way out of

A study in 2013 by the Institute of Medicine estimated that high school football players suffered 11.2 concussions for every 10,000 games they played in, whereas the collegiate rate was only 6.3. Another study found that only one concussion was diagnosed in college football for every six suspected concussions. One last alarming statistic is that in 2015, Boston University had discovered CTE in 96 percent of NFL players examined. There is no cure for this awful disease and by ceasing college football at our university we will save many students from future cognitive
While concussions are an unpreventable injury with current technology, the media is blowing it out of proportion, saying it causes brain deformities later in life for all players. This “evidence” is anecdotal, because the NFL only tested players who had played professional or college football. High school is a much different game in that it is less violent. The hits are decidedly less powerful, because in a sport where “bigger, stronger, faster” is the goal, high school players are “smaller, weaker and slower” than the pros. When a player has experienced or shown signs of head trauma (e.g., loss of consciousness, visual disturbance, headache, inability to walk correctly, obvious disorientation, memory loss), that player should receive immediate medical attention from an appropriate medical provider and should not be allowed to return to practices or games without
What is Football? Football is a brutal sport that can have lifelong consequences. It’s dangerous and overrated. It has become a business that is only concerned about winning at the cost of maiming players, but people love it. Football players suffer more concussions than athletes in any other high school sport. Is this beloved game worth the risks, or should schools do away with it? High school football players can undergo significant brain changes after just one season, even if they don’t get

The NFL is spending money on researching the problem, because they have been sued from hundreds of players that have suffered long-term damage from concussions. The NFL needs to dedicate more money and research into increasing helmet safety, implementing rules and policies to protect players, and utilizing the best response treatment to prevent and protect players from concussions.
