Most of the procedures we have these days are there because animal testing has helped in developing it. In addition, when new treatments should be developed, there is no safer and more accurate way to prove it harmless than testing with animals. Although there are certain alternatives such as computers, undoubtedly for human rights scientists should choose the assured and guaranteed way of animal testing. Therefore, until a suitable substitution as exact and as precise as testing with animals appear, animal testing shall be mandatory. Animal testing has risen as an extremely controversial topic among scientists and animal rights activists. Many see it as a necessary part of finding cures for thousands of diseases. On the other hand, animal rights activists believe it is an inhumane, harsh, and unnecessary flaw in science. The argument can go back and forth but I believe animal testing should not be used in today’s technically advanced era. The laws are flawed, the failures are evident, and the available alternatives prove that animal testing should be indefinitely banned for future science experiments.

Asking just about any animal rights activists on the thoughts of animal testing, it is reasonable to expect that the majority of them would address crucial flaws in many of the laws in regards to animals and how animals are supposedly “protected” by these laws. Trained scientists and researchers take on the key role of testing on animals in laboratories and facilities throughout the world, using the excuse that we are expanding knowledge and furthering medical research. In the United States alone, there are very few laws truly protecting animals from the unnecessary amounts of suffering the research forces upon them with many exceptions. Animal testing is a hotly debated topic among many people. It is the use of animals for research purposes, or to test various new medicines or products. The goal is to see how the animals will react before the products are used for human consumption. The problems arise with the issue of ethics and whether or not the results will actually translate to humans. In the United States about 20 million animals are used for medical and cosmetic research. These animals include mice, bunnies, cats, dogs, guinea pigs and many other species of animals. Many of these animals people have for household pets, people consider these animals to be friendly and harmless and they are loved by humans. However, these animals do not share the same rights as humans mostly because people believe animals are inferior to them. Animals can not speak for themselves and tell researchers not to test on them like people can. I think this is unfair because animals share the same emotions as people do, they can feel afraid and scared of the testing that is going to be done on them. Studies prove that is is not necessary to use animals for medical and cosmetic research, there are laws to protect animals and some governments banned using animals for cosmetic research.

Imagine being poked and prodded while being strapped to a table, what would it be like to do this on daily bases against your will for months on end? Perhaps you can ask all the animals who suffer in medical labs everyday. Animals are unable to give consent to being used this way, shouldn't there be a way to protect them from this kind of torture? Although many don't believe that animals deserve rights,protection should be given to animals used in medical research. Animals used against their will in labs often face trauma, serious injuries, and even occasionally death. Why wouldn't someone want to help free these animals?

First, Animals used for scientific testing is cruel and inhumane because animal’s experience feelings just like humans. What I discovered in my research is that animal testing is not all humane and pain free as most people think. “The US Department of Agriculture reported in 2010 that 97,123 animals suffered pain during experiments while being given no anesthesia for relief” (ProCon.org). If humans receive anesthesia during surgeries, then so should the animals. These animals undergo procedures that cause these animals to feel 100% pain. The Animal Welfare Act is the only United States law that covers animals used as research. This law passed in 1966, regulates “the treatment of animals in research, exhibition, transport, and by dealers.” The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) is in charge with enforcing the Animal Welfare Act. Under the AWA, it restricts the USDA from preventing animal testing within laboratories along with allowing, “any experiments regardless of the amount of pain or distress they might cause.” The majority of animals such as: mice, rats and birds that are used as experimentation are excluded in the AWA, leaving them the opportunity to suffer in the laboratories. Animals are often forced participants in torturous medical tests. They have no choice, and so we take advantage. However, there are two sides to this argument. Many feel that the safety of humans outweighs the comfort of animals. In reality, we have no right to exploit animals for mere luxury. Unnecessary and harmful animal testing is unethical and should be eliminated.

The only law that has been created to regulate animal treatment is the Animal Welfare Act, according to InfoBase learning, “the law does not, however, ban the infliction of pain on animal subjects outright. Additionally, the Animal Welfare Act covers only dogs, cats, primates, rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs. It does not cover mice, rats, or birds.” While this law does set restrictions on animal testing, it does not cover all species used for research. Through this act, select animals are provided minimal protection, while the other animals are excluded. The animals that do receive the protection are still mistreated and abused, while the animals that are unaffected by the law are still being mistreated, to a greater degree. The animals deserve much better treatment and unfortunately have no control over whether or not they will be tested on. Because of the problems surrounding animal experimentation, limitations should be placed on animal testing because of ethical standards, unreliability, and existing alternative methods.

Imagine yourself being medically tested and abused constantly. Isn’t that a horrible thing? That’s what animals go through almost everyday. Animal medical research and animal testing has been going on for years and years and needs to be stopped immediately. They have lives just like us and are being treated like their nothing.
