A common debate in the world today involves abortion, the deliberate end of human pregnancy, and whether or not it should be legalized. “Every year in the world there are an estimated 40-50 million abortions. This corresponds to approximately 125,000 abortions per day” (“Abortions Worldwide this Year”). On one side of the argument, people are not disturbed by this grotesque number, and on the other side there are people outraged and simply appalled. Although people attempt to deem abortion acceptable in society because of circumstances like the mother not being able to support the child or in instances of rape, it is still morally wrong.

Abortion has been a topic of debate for centuries if not longer. Abortion occurs when a fetus is removed from a woman 's body before the fetus is able to fully develop. Before the 1800s, not many laws existed concerning abortion. It was not until 1973 that the Supreme Court listened to a case concerning abortion. In 1973, the Supreme Court struck down all state laws that had ruled abortion illegal in Roe versus Wade. However, many still argue that abortion should be illegal. Abortion should be legal and an option available to expecting mothers due to issues such as rape, life or death situations in mothers, and teen pregnancy.

The United States did not begin to prohibit abortion until the nineteenth century. Except abortions that were “necessary to save the life of the woman”, most abortions were illegal in the U.S. by 1880. One reason for making abortion crime was because most procedures done had high mortality rates. Risks against women for performing these procedures, however, cannot explain the large push against abortion. The topic of abortion brings up a debatable issue regarding prenatal testing. An ultrasound is a standard procedure where the fetus can be checked upon and evaluated. With this procedure, abnormalities of the fetus can be detected, so further testing can be done to determine the health of the fetus. Nevertheless, what if anomalies are detected and the fetus either has a chance of not surviving or will be born with severe disabilities? It is unethical to most individuals, but the decision to end a pregnancy should always be accessible to the woman even if their decision is simply because their child would be born with disabilities.

In this world where abortion has been discussed to a high extent, it would seem that there would be a definite answer on the ethicality of abortion. It would also seem that through the increase of scientific research through the years, there would be a solution to the question: when does life begin? However this is not the case, especially when religion is brought into the picture. Despite what we may believe abortion is neither right, nor wrong. It is the matter of a personal opinion; each side will certainty says that the other one is wrong. Even though millions of abortions have been performed since 1973, the debate over whether abortion is strongly argued by many Americans, as well as people of many other countries and cultures. Abortion in my opinion should be illegal, there are people in this world who simply cannot have children of their own. There are other options available than one choosing to end a pregnancy. Abortion is a touchy subject, but just like an other debate there is two sides. In this case one is either Pro-life, or Pro-choice. Pro-life is when one is 100% against abortion and believes that life begins at conception, which means abortion at any stage of pregnancy is considered murder. They also believe that life whether born or unborn is precious, and that the life of the unborn is just as valuable as the born. Then there is pro-choice, where one believes that the parents of the fetus should have the choice to either follow through with the pregnancy or to terminate. The definition of abortion is the act of removing a human embryo or fetus from the uterus of a pregnant woman prior to the completion of the full term of pregnancy.” Abortions have always been and will always be a topic that no one will ever agree upon. Some Pro-abortionists claim that the anti-abortionist are completely against women having rights and the choice rather than the abortion in itself. Pro-life and pro-choice have different opinions, mainly in the fact of where life begins, and the side effects abortions have on the mothers, politics, and how religion plays in on abortions.

Since almost the beginning of time, abortion has been something that is considered very taboo in our society. Many people do not like to discuss it or share their views on it to spare the feelings or judgement of others. However, it is a very important topic that deserves to have more light shed on it as well as have more supporters be open and outspoken about it. Activists are constantly battling to secure protection, equality, and resources for every community. For a nation that prides itself on freedom, there are still those who strive to limit and regulate women’s choices. Gender equality will not be achieved if women cannot have full control of their own bodies. Organizations such as Planned Parenthood, not only provide crucial services to sustain a safe and healthy lifestyle, but also advocate on behalf of those who are incapable of doing so. Such organizations should be encouraged and supported, instead of condemned.
