What is probably going on inside Rainsford head is he is probably thinking as to how he got in this type of situation, for him being stuck on an island that he doesn’t even know about, except for its name. He’s probably of ways to escape the island by using one of Zaroff’s resources such as a boat. His reactions to his first day on Ship-Trap Island was very exhausting and tiresome because of when he accidently fell off the ship and had to swim to the island through those rough waters. As he laid there, his reaction was to find was to find out where that gunshot happened, because where there is a gunshot, theirs people also.
His thoughts about hunting big game animals at the beginning of the story was he did not think nothing much of it. He
He tells about a mistake he had made, trying to choose going hunting over caring for his family.
Chunk 1: to begin with, when Rainsford is on the deck of the yacht at night he hears a gunshot piercing the air. Trying to get a closer look, Rainsford loses his balance and falls off the yacht into the water. In the water, “a certain coolheadedness had come to him”(3). Rainsford remains calm. When rainsford falls from the yacht, he does not try swimming back to the yacht. Rainsford recalls the direction where he heard the gunshots. From there, Rainsford begins swimming in that direction in the thick and darkness of the night to Ship Trap Island. Rainsford’s
In the beginning of when Rainsford first met General Zaroff, Mr. Rainsford could not go to sleep because of how general Zaroff said that he hunted his own kind. Own kind meaning that General Zaroff hunts human beings. Mr. Rainsford thought that General Zaroff was crazy for hunting people when General Zaroff said that it wasn’t murder when it is. Rainsford reaction to his first day on Shop Trap Island is that he gets the creeps and has an eerie feeling once he sees the creepy old Island, then he heard a sound that startled him. That sound was a gunshot that was shot three times then he lost his balance and fell off the ship causing him to freak out and try to survive swimming towards the shore. So you can tell that he was scared to death when
When Rainsford fell off the yacht he found the house that Zaroff was living in. Zaroff was holding “a long-barreled revolver” and he was aiming it directly at “Rainsford's [torso]” (Connell 23). When Rainsford got to the house and Zaroff was holding the revolver to his chest, he would have been shocked to have a radical greeting. When Zaroff figured out who it was he greeted him inside and started to talk about hunting and how Zaroff has so many heads. ...
When Rainsford first arrives on the island, General Zaroff asks him to hunt and explains the unusual nature of his prey. Rainsford agrees to hunting with Zaroff. Rainsford really likes hunting and he knows what to do so he doesn’t need Zaroffs help. The reason why Rainsford doesn’t need Zaroffs help is because Rainsford knows more about hunting then Zaroff does, that’s probably why Zaroff is asking for Rainsfords help. Zaroff likes hunting for human, but there isn’t a lot of human on that island most of the things on the island are animals. Rainsford only agreed to help Zaroff because that’s the only way off the island and Rainsford doesn’t want to stay on the island. He wants to get off. Well another way he can get off of the island is by
Rainsford does not want to loose so he wants to slow general Zaroff to slow down. He accomplishes this by setting up a trap. According to the text, “But he was not quite quick enough; the dead tree, delicately adjusted to rest on the cut living one, crashed and struck the general a glancing blow on the shoulder as it fell but for his alertness, he must have been smashed beneath it” (29). General Zaroff falls for the trick and gets injured. The idea of slowing down was accomplished which causes him to go home and take care of his wound. While Rainsford finally gets time alone during the night he thinks up another plan. According to the story, “ He stepped back from the quicksand a dozen feet or so, and like some huge prehistoric beaver, he began to dig”(30). This quote shows that he is developing more survival traits because he is figuring out how he can make certain traps with using natural resources around
When Rainsfords finds out that General Zaroff likes to hunt humans, he feels very shocked. Rainsfords what's to get off the island before he gets killed
He does this rather than being killed on the spot because he refused to be hunted. Rainsford does not want to simply be killed because he disagreed on General Zaroffs opinion on the object he hunts. Finding the idea absurd, Rainsford reluctantly agrees to be hunted after learning about the terms. This does not automatically make him go insane or change him but rather introduces what he will become. Rainsford sets off running away from General Zaroff trying to remain calm. Rainsford makes his way to a tree and climbs it. A couple hours later when he reaches the top branch of the tree he hears Zaroff coming after him and has to constantly remind himself to remain idle in the tree so he won't be caught. One would see this when Rainsford is travelling through the bushes reciting to himself, "I must keep my nerve, I must keep my nerve, I must keep my nerve" (Connell 229). Rainsford thinks he has a chance at leaving the island but this confidence diminishes when he realizes that he may not make it
To start off, Rainsford was setting up traps for Zaroff and since he went hunting he was good at it. This scene shows how Rainsford has used and made traps from his prior hunting experiences. Connell uses specific details to illustrates traps Rainsford made. When Rainsford trap hit Zaroff's shoulder, Zaroff could sense danger and leaped back with the ability of an ape” (Connell 18). The traps that Rainsford made were good because Zaroff had a disadvantage when he lost Ivan and one of the best dogs he had so Rainsford had to eliminate Zaroff and he could
He swims ashore and is greeted by General Zaroff who lives on the island. General Zaroff takes Rainsford back to his house located inland. Rainsford learns that Zaroff intentionally crashes ships on the coast of his island to take seaman captive and trains them to be hunted. Zaroff tells Rainsford he may stay on the island and live in peace, or Rainsford may take the hunting challenge he gives everyone. Rainsford being the courageous man he is, accepts the challenge Zaroff has proposed.
Being lost in an island, hungry, and tired is not an everyday thing. So Rainsford being in that situation, had no other choice than except Zaroff’s generosity. Zaroff gave Rainsford clothes, food and, a place to sleep. Zaroff tells Rainsford to join him for dinner, and Rainsford went to the dinner room as told. Sitting down eating there meal. The two men’s starts a conversation and starts to talk about their lives. Zaroff learns a lot of things about Rainsford and so does Rainsford. Rainsford learns that Zaroff is a smart man and a hunter just like him, but Zaroff him hunting people is part of things that he hunts for. Zaroff on another hand learns that Rainsford is a pretty smart, educated man and lastly a hunter.4
Beyond his reactive and resourceful ways of thinking, Rainsford is visibly aggressive and energetic when he has to fight instead of fleeing. He refuses to allow himself to give up and be killed by Zaroff and decides to keep on running forward. As the hunter is escaping, he says, “Nerve, nerve, nerve!” and then “forced himself on toward that gap”, where he “leaped far out into the sea.” (14). Rainsford believed that he still had enough energy left to swim in the harsh waters. As a result, he experienced a rush of adrenaline due to how
Rainsford had arrived on the shore of Ship-Trap Island after falling off a yacht. According to the narrator, “Bleak darkness was blacking out the sea and jungle when Rainsford sighted the lights” (Connell 45). The island Rainsford arrived on was filled with darkness, with light only coming from Zaroff’s château. The use of setting signifies the importance of where the story is taking place. In the beginning of the story, the island was described as dark, giving a feeling of indistinction. This setting first overwhelmed Rainsford, for he did not know what to do. The setting of the jungle is described as a location of being constrictive because it did not allow Rainsford to return back home. Rainsford used his instinct to navigate though the unknowns of Ship-Trap Island. Zaroff had the confidence of navigating the island’s challenges, so he distrusted his instinct. While setting helped reveal the message of the story, characterization also supported the author’s argument.
After falling off the ship, Rainsford swam in the direction of where he heard three gunshots come from. The first thing he notices as he reaches the rocks was the large animal that had went in the underbrush and the blood stained on a patch of weeds. Rainsford then finds a cartridge and realizes that the animal had been shot with a twenty-two. He went on his way looking for something to show him the way to where the “men” he suspected to be on the island were. Just as he was hoping, he found prints of hunting boots. These small details showing how alert, intelligent, and descriptive he is says a lot about the character
It had been a week since Rainsford managed to kill the nefarious General Zaroff. The challenging part was almost over or so it seemed. There was not a clear way for Rainsford to escape. As days passed, Rainsford tried to escape. He tried making a boat from driftwood that he found, he tried swimming, he even tried sending a signal by using a flashlight. Rainsford had become so desperate that he even tried some ridiculous plans like trying to pole vault across the ocean. As a result, Rainsford ended up having huge gashes in his left leg ,which got infected, and he had to amputate it. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, Rainsford had lost hope and became bitter.
