The Eagle Creek fire—allegedly sparked by teenagers playing with fireworks over Labor Day weekend—has so far consumed over 37,000 acres in and around some of the most cherished spots in the Columbia River Gorge. When people think of right and wrong, they don’t give much thought to that person’s perspective to what is actually right and wrong. Society follows one another, so when one think’s something so right, other dont make their descion for themselves to truly decide if it is right or wrong

Matthew E. Barnes was a firefighter who could be called many things including a hero, a friend, a husband, a father and even an angel. The story begins like many 9/11 stories do, with the planes being hijacked, he was one of the men working that day in the New York City Fire Department that would go into the World Trade Center, but would never come out. The 37-year old resident of Monroe, New York was a father to three boys and the husband to Ms. Susan Barnes; he would spend all his available time with his family, somehow slipping out of chores and such just to go fishing with his boys. Two years before the 9/11 he had saved two twins, Isabella and Jacob Kalodner from a fire in their mother, Linda Kalodner’s apartment, by climbing up a 100-foot aerial ladder to the 10th story to save the 6 week old twins.

Hunter Harris Anderson looked up through the towering gum trees, feeling the sunlight cascade down on him, dappled by the straggly branches of a young wattle. A sense of awe engulfed him as he wondered at the height and strength of the century old trunks. The steady rush of the stream provided a constant background noise, which, in harmony with the occasional rustle of leaves and birdcalls throughout the trees, created the raw melody of the Australian bush. Hunter stood, eyes closed, and listened, enjoying each and every note.

THEME: The line between good and evil is sometimes unclear, and as a result, people often think that they are doing the right thing when it is actually the wrong action, and vice versa.

In Cynthia Ozick’s essay “On Excellence”, she uses many different words and phrases to define excellence, but not in straight forward manner. Ozick often uses words that compare her and her mother’s skills to excellence. With Ozick being able to have real life situations in which she can relate to, furthers her understanding of excellence, and contrasts her mother’s skills to hers. Ozick says, “Lavish: my mother was as lavish as nature” (242). That was one of the first examples in which she compared he mother to that of excellence. Ozick is trying to compare her mother to excellence by pointing out little flaws in her work such as the corn rows not lining up, and her threads hanging a little on a freshly sewed dress.

Because of these differences, every person sees each situation they face differently. Sometimes people mean well, but their actions are very poor. The sad part is that they don't know that what they're doing isn't right. They think that they're helping, when in reality, they're just making it worse. Another example, When someone thinks they are doing the right thing, they normally only think about themselves before others.

There are always two sides to every coin. For example, without evil, there can be no good. Is being a good person all about the things one does or is it about the reason one does the things they do? There 's good and bad in everyone. Humanity isn 't perfect, and our lives are so complex. In the film titled Nightcrawler, Louis Bloom shows viewers first-hand what it is like to be a journalist in the fast pace city of Los Angeles. Throughout the film, Louis attempts to manipulate the other characters and uses their weakness against them to get whatever he desires. Even though a person may be considered as a bad person they still could possibly commit actions that a good person normally world and vice-versa. For many people, it may be easy for them to characterize Louis as a bad person, due to the choices and decisions he makes through the movie. After watching the film several times, I am still pondering over what exactly it means to be a bad or good person. Everyone makes mistakes; it is inevitable. But the thing that separates a good person from a bad person is that a good person learns from those mistakes and never repeats those same mistakes again. Making mistakes is part of what makes us human. They not only help one learn from our experiences, but they also help shape one into the individual they would like to become. What is considered evil depends upon each individual’s view of morality, which constantly changes through the course of that person’s life. Being good or doing good things leads to many things, but in order to give a clearer definition, one must understand what it is that these good actions created. Once one understands this, then the individual can clearly see the logic behind what some would consider an evil action. Over time, humankind has strived to become what they believed to be holy pure or good. This attempt at being what is virtuous has given birth to a set code of conduct or thoughts that are now commonly seen as the right thing. This code of conduct was based upon morals, which are any given individuals thoughts and believes on what is acceptable as good and evil. Due to the fact that mankind also strives to be accepted by there peers, a common set of morals was established and agreed upon by any specific generation of people to be the good thing. Understanding and knowing these the morals of these given times in history will be necessary to understanding how to define evil.

Humans cannot help but ask themselves, are the acts of goodness which are seen around them by others really true acts of good will or being good? Good will can be defined as a “kindly feeling of approval and support, benevolent interest or concern,” (Webster’s) and good can be defined as “morally excellent, virtuous, righteous, pious, excellence or merit, kindness, and a favorable character or tendency.” (Dictionary.com) Good can also be defined by the culture we live in and by what is also socially good and or correct. Good can be defined as doing what is right,

So, what is evil?  Is it Hitler's near annihilation of the Jewish people during World War II or the senseless massacre at Ti'enneman Square on mainland China?  Again we turn to Webster's dictionary, which states evil as causing distress or harm, a source of sorrow, and the fact of suffering, misfortune, and wrongdoing. (Merriam-Webster)   Evil would be any intention to cause an undesirable effect upon one's self or on another person.  So by saying that the intentions of a person are not to cause good we automatically assume that they are out to cause evil.
