The silence cut through the air like a knife. Ash fell from the sky giving the illusion that it was snowing. Glass littered the ground, puncturing the tires of passing cars. Flames lit up the night sky and radiated heat. The smell of gasoline filled the air, mixing with the scent of pine trees and fresh air. The newly paved road was stained by fresh blood. The wheels spun to a stop on the upside-down car. The world seemed to move in slow motion. Catie wished she could travel back in time and change what had happened. Catie was not the kind of girl that could blend in with a crowd, she stood just above eye level with most average height girls. Her wiry figure contradicted her fiery personality and she could convince anyone of anything, no matter how ridiculous, but lacked the ability to admit she was wrong. Her slim face was complimented by the minimal makeup she wore and her hair flowed down past her shoulders like a river. Her lean figure was upheld by the countless miles she ran each day. On the outside, she seemed normal and happy, but in reality, Catie was dark and constantly sad. Catie did not have many friends in her life, but she was especially close to her sister, Sarah. Their bond was unbreakable, especially after all the turmoil their relationship had gone through. As kids, …show more content…
Rosa yelled, “I was not done speaking to you!” Catie completely ignored her as she slammed the school door open. She rummaged through her backpack and fished out her car keys. The headlights flashed and the car beeped signaling it was unlocked as she pulled the door open. Sitting in the front seat, tears started to flow down Catie’s face. She didn’t know what to do. She couldn’t go home and face her parents fighting, but she couldn’t stay here and listen to Mrs. Rosa drone on anymore. Suddenly her phone started to vibrate and beep. She glanced over to see who was calling and scoffed in disgust when Sarah’s name popped up onto the
“I told you sweetie, she is in a better place right now. She won’t be coming home.” She looks up at me with tears in her eyes. “That’s not fair! Why would he leave us?” “It wasn’t her fault baby girl,” I say tearing up. “I WANT TO SEE HER NOW!” Amelia starts screaming. “You can’t see her!” I shout back.
The stereotypes of the elderly are influencing Mattie's life. She is telling herself not to do things because of her age whether or not she is physically able to do them, simply because people associate age with inability and dependence upon others. Her family and friends are expecting and encouraging this dependence.
In the book, Mattie starts out as a lazy teenager who needs to be told what to do by her over controlling mother, but throughout the story, she becomes more responsible and adult-like. For
Mattie was smart. She remembered everything her grandpa taught her. She saw Willow trees and remembered this trick: find a Willow tree and you will soon see water nearby. She saw raspberries, and knew that rabbits were nearby. She is the reason why her and her grandfather survived. Her personal traits that helped her get through this was the
Deej Logan was just like any normal high school girl. She woke up on her first day of school and combed her hair, picked out the “perfect” outfit and headed out the door. What she didn’t know is that after that day nothing would be the same. Nothing that day seemed to be going right. At school drama was swarming all around her, not exactly what she hoped the first day would be like. By the time the last bell of the day rang she was more than happy to get out of that school. She drove home as quickly as she could but as soon as she got home she realized that she had forgotten to pick up her sisters. “Great.” She thought sarcastically as she sat back down in her car and drove off. Just then she pulled out her phone to message one of her friends about her awful day. That one decision changed everything. Before she had a chance to send the message Deej veered off into oncoming traffic and was killed on impact.
When her family and close friends disappear one by one, Mattie is forced to make decisions through hardships by herself. By doing so, she matures and becomes a better person throughout the process. For example, Mattie takes care of her grandfather when there was
In the beginning of the book Mattie is always being told what to do, when to wake up, how to do her chores, etc. This causes her to be unreliable as well as immature when she takes her anger out on her cat Silas. Mattie also tended to mumble things under her breath. This demonstrates to the reader that Mattie isn’t good with handling her problems. In the book on page 53 chapter 17 it saids “ I stood so quickly that the seams under my arms ripped open with a snarl...It’s not a tavern, it’s a coffeehouse”(Anderson 17). To sum up the quote Mattie gets offended and deals with it in an immature way, which leads to her standing up and yelling across the table. When the story starts to pick up Mattie finds herself in a situation causing her to become more like a mother figure. This happens when she finds Nell and cares for her. When Mattie finds Nell, Nell is in a house alone as her mother lays dead on the bed. Mattie knows that Nell doesn’t know what is happening so she takes her. Mattie even said that they need each other causing Mattie to mature in a situation like that. On page 179 chapter 23 it saids “ Nell climbed in my lap and fell asleep sucking her thumb...I worked the knots out of her hair slowly and gently”(Anderson 179). This quote has changed Mattie to being the character she was in the story. Mattie somewhat adopted Nell into her family as she has matured
Taylor could not afford the new tires she needed for her car so Mattie allowed Taylor to store her car at the shop. She eventually gave Taylor a job, so she could save money to pay for the tires. This showed that Mattie had a caring heart and was happy to help those in need. She taught Taylor many useful lessons, such as teaching Taylor to be a confident mother for Turtle. She told Taylor that raising a kid could be challenging but worth it if you were willing to try. Even through the bad times, Mattie was willing to give Taylor the love and support she needed, the whole way through. Mattie started off as being a good friend to Taylor, but due to her big, gentle heart, she was more like family. Through thick and thin, family is always there no matter
Mattie’s friend Pollie died of a fever. Soon Mattie’s mother became ill forcing Mattie and her grandfather to leave town so they don't get sick. When leaving town they were suspected of having the fever, so they were dropped off on the side of the road. While walking home Mattie became ill and fainted, waking up in the hospital. She recovered and returned home, finding her mother missing. That night robbers broke into Mattie’s home, killing her grandfather. Now alone, Mattie set off to find food. She finds an orphaned girl named Nell and meets up with her old friend, Eliza, who welcomes the girls into her home. Eliza’s nephews and Nell become gravely ill. The children get better and Mattie and Eliza re-open the family-run coffee shop.
4. Mattie comes across many different types of people in the book, some of the most important people she comes across are people from different races. Mattie always treated everyone as a single individual and not by the color of their skin. Mattie tells the farm hand to tell the owner that the horse is great. The farm hand responds to her by saying that he can't mention her as an equal. Mattie shows her companion for people in that.
With a wealthy, relatively carefree life, she echoes herself in the early life of Mattie, and, like both Mattie and Ethan, has her parents both pass away (An Edith Wharton Chronology). Her own infidelity with Morton Fullerton - just a year before she began writing - is mirrored in the star-crossed love of Ethan and Mattie (An Edith Wharton Chronology). Furthermore, her own husband, like Ethan’s wife Zenobia, is also mentally unstable; Zenobia’s hypochondria and Mr.
Sister would always leave in the morning and I would never see her until the sun started going down. Before she would go to sleep, she would always make me food and give me a big hug saying “You're number one in my book Caleb!” It always made me feel better after the long, boring, empty day that shrouded all the happiness that I could feel if Maggie were there…

My senile grandpa lived with us for a short while before his death. He'd sleep on the floor in the living room, claimed beds were uncomfortable. Our cat, Miles, would knock knickknacks off the shelves onto grandpa in the night. He'd wake up pissed as hell, fuming about how the cat was trying to kill him like in the Cat From Hell segment from Tales From The Darkside.
